Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emigration debate is as old as our democracy itself. When the “new South Africa” dawned in 1994, many people left the country out of fear for what majority rule would hold. More still left in the years that followed to seek a better life elsewhere, and communities of expats can be found all over the world in places such as Canada, England and Australia. Today, 25 years after the dawn of democracy, as optimism about the country’s future ebbs and flows, new impetus has been given to the emigration debate. This time around, it is not only being discussed in reactionary circles, but around dinner tables of all creeds as many people leave for better education, job opportunities and safety. With the reality of nine wasted years tugging at our wallets and future prospects, and the allure of a global economy pulling strong, more and more people are asking, “Should I go?” In Should we go? more than 20 of South Africa’s foremost thought leaders such as Jonathan Jansen, Mandy Wiener, Phumzile van Damme and Ferial Haffajee grapple with this question. It is an attempt to find some answers that will give insight to and challenge every person who is thinking of leaving, has already left, or has decided to stay so that they may thrive as South Africans wherever they are.

Book excerpt: The widespread availability of internet search data is a new source of high-frequency information that can potentially improve the precision of macroeconomic forecasting, especially in areas with data constraints. This paper investigates whether travel-related online search queries enhance accuracy in the forecasting of tourist arrivals to The Bahamas from the U.S. The results indicate that the forecast model incorporating internet search data provides additional information about tourist flows over a univariate approach using the traditional autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and multivariate models with macroeconomic indicators. The Google Trends-augmented model improves predictability of tourist arrivals by about 30 percent compared to the benchmark ARIMA model and more than 20 percent compared to the model extended only with income and relative prices.

Book excerpt: As with the two previous diaries, this is not only about people we met on the road and the problems encountered when using an ageing American Motorhome (RV). She gives her thoughts in asides, not necessarily on travel, but personal feelings whilst away from home. As seen, Lisa overcame her doubts over life on the road and maybe the positives overcame the negatives in the end, so many memories! We have inserted fifty colorful photos which were hard to pick from the huge collection, together with a map and a listing of the road route taken. This diary covers the last part of ‘The Big Lap’ anticlockwise around Australia that had started from Queensland’s Gold Coast ( Diary 2) up to Central Queensland, across to Northern Territory, Western Australia and down to the southern coast at Bremer Bay. This final Diary 3 covers the final part of the Lap from the Nullarbor Plain, along the coast of South Australia to Victoria, inland New South Wales and back up to the Gold Coast. That concluded the big trip around Australia, but we decided that we would pay one more trip up to Bowen (North Queensland) and back down through inland Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, before spending time exploring Tasmania. Be honest with yourself about your situation and choose to either repair or leave the marriage—and ensure that God is involved in your decision-making process. Written with the hope of helping others, Should You Stay or Should You Go shares the inspirational personal story of Kirk and Deborah Taylor, who know that God has blessed their marriage together as they walk in His guidance of what He has designed marriage to be. They talk about their childhood experiences and how these experiences shaped them to be who they are as adults. Both were in difficult long-term marriages. They describe their struggles with being Christians and thinking God’s displeasure would certainly be upon them if they divorced. They stayed in their marriages and tried to repair their relationships. But eventually both decided to divorce after realizing their marriages weren’t refining them but damaging them. This personal narrative and faith-inspired guide tells the story of two people who dealt with long-term marriages that ended in divorce—and who later found each other with God’s help, and now have a fulfilling and loving second marriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tonight, across America, countless people will embark on an adventure. They will prowl among overgrown headstones in forgotten graveyards, stalk through darkened woods and wildlands, and creep down the crumbling corridors of abandoned buildings. They have set forth in search of a profound paranormal experience and may seem to achieve just that. They are part of the growing cultural phenomenon called legend tripping. In If You Should Go at Midnight: Legends and Legend Tripping in America, author Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl guides readers through an exploration of legend tripping, drawing on years of scholarship, documentary accounts, and his own extensive fieldwork. Poring over old reports and legends, sleeping in haunted inns, and trekking through wilderness full of cannibal mutants and strange beasts, Debies-Carl provides an in-depth analysis of this practice that has long fascinated scholars yet remains a mystery to many observers. Debies-Carl argues that legend trips are important social practices. Unlike traditional rites of passage, they reflect the modern world, revealing both its problems and its virtues. In society as well as in legend tripping, there is ambiguity, conflict, crisis of meaning, and the substitution of debate for social consensus. Conversely, both emphasize individual agency and values, even in spiritual matters. While people still need meaningful and transformative experiences, authoritative, traditional institutions are less capable of providing them. Instead, legend trippers voluntarily search for individually meaningful experiences and actively participate in shaping and interpreting those experiences for themselves.

Does your partner make promises, only to break or betray your trust repeatedly? Is your partner controlling or just plain mean? Have you read every relationship book out there, practiced your communication skills and still feel unheard or neglected? Are you done with second chances? Should you stay or should you go? We live in a world of romance and rescue—where everyone believes love will conquer all, and the more we put up with, the more loving we are being. It doesn't work that way. Sometimes we choose mean people, and before long we are in so deep we don't know whether we are coming or going. One day you want to fight harder and the next day you are ready to pack it in, and the next day you want to fight harder. Should I Stay or Should I Go is a survival manual, a guidebook—and a shot of reality. Some people will never change, and kissing frogs is the stuff of fairy tales, not real life. The Beast never turns out to be a nice guy (or gal). This is a book that breaks down what mean people do to us, how they do it, and what we can do to survive.

Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book excerpt: You must love a child from the time the sperm unites with the egg and tell yourself, aEURoeI would make up my mind that I would love the child all my life regardless of physical characteristics, mental abilities, and personality or anything the child might say or do.aEUR Reading this book should convince you that if we are to raise children to be successful, we must first teach them what success is. I believe there is no true success without complete commitment to and complete faith in God. We should start teaching our children the right way to go from the day they are born. In fact, we must start long before they are born so that both the parents and the child will be prepared to learn the way to live from the beginning. If we wait until the child is a teenager to teach them these things, it may be too late. Also, with the love of Christ in our hearts, we must set the right examples of responsibility, honesty, integrity, work ethics, and the like, especially because the child is born with the instinct to be like the parents. We must teach our children to love America. Not just respect it but to really love and appreciate our great country as well. Our children should be loved the same whether they have an IQ of l80 or they struggle to make passing grades. We must love them just the same if they have physical or mental impairments. We must warn them of the evils of alcohol, drugs, sex outside of marriage, greed, selfishness, and all the other sins, which keep them from having a successful life.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together
