Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shorter English Poems We propose also to supplement the plan already sketched by giving a section to our longer poems and another to our longer prose works. In reproducing these it will become unavoidable that parts should represent the whole; but each will be so described that whatever passages are given may be read with knowledge of their context and of their relation to the main design. These volumes will gain much by rigid avoidance of disconnected extracts. A mere book of cuttings out of finished pieces is handiwork like that of the degenerate courtiers of the days of Louis XV., who snipped single figures from engravings of the works of the best masters, and stuck them confusedly on screens. Every true work of art has its own point of unity, and blends its harmonies into a perfect round. No healthy sense of Literature can be acquired, and where any exists it can only be stupefied, by the use of elegant extracts. A fair selection from its riches ought to bring a large and happy sense of the true meaning of mu Literature home into many a room where books must needs be few, and ought to make the wit and wisdom of our country pleasant to young and old wherever English books are read. If sometimes a good work contains a word or passage that, through change of manners, could not now be read aloud in every household, I remove the stumbling-block. But wherever change is made, square brackets or notes show the extent of it. In giving pieces of our early Literature, writers before the Conquest will be represented by translation. In what was written after that time, spelling of words still current will be brought into agreement with the present usage, whenever that can be done without injury to rhyme, metre, or sense; and many notes will help the interpretation of the words now obsolete. The notes may contain any kind of information or suggestion that will quicken the enjoyment of the work they illustrate. Now and then some short pieces of old English will be left just as we receive them from our forefathers, and this will be done at intervals frequent enough to make them serviceable to those who care to get what help they can to a closer knowledge of our language. The best use of the study of language is to develop our perception of the finer charms of thought, and if it should be the good fortune of this Library to be well thumbed in many homes, the quiet hours will come when one and another reader will be disposed to get all possible help from notes that were at first passed over. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Shorter Poems The aim of this edition of Milton's Shorter Poems is, primarily, to supply the pupil, by means of notes and questions, the necessary information and stimulus for the understanding of the poems studied. No attempt has been made to produce a learned book. There is already an abundance of such editions of Milton; and the present editor does not believe that the apparatus of the scholar is necessary or even desir able for the high school pupil. Consequently there are few references to other authors, and the necessary explanations are made as brief as possible. That the pupil may be helped as much as possible, the notes are put at the bottom of the page where they will be immediately available; and many questions are inserted to stimulate thought and enable the student to work, out the meaning for himself. The teacher has also been kept in mind. The questions at the bottom of the page, primarily for the pupil, will suggest many other questions to bring out the meaning of the text; the questions at the back of the book will suggest ways of bringing out the larger aspects of the poems as to form and subject matter; while the outlines will serve both teacher and pupil as a convenient framework for study of the relations of the different parts of each poem. The editor assumes that the teacher will be familiar with other editions of these poems. Huntington's (ginn Neilson's (scott, Foresman and Trent's (long man, Green Co.) editions are especially useful and have been referred to freely in preparing this edition. One sug gestion has been taken from Parrott and Long's English Poems from Chaucer to Kipling. Of the complete editions of Milton's English poems, Masson's, the so-called standard, is too conjectural in its notes to be trusted, Browne's (clarendon Press Series) is perhaps as satisfactory as any other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Songs, and Other Small Poems "Barry Cornwall, with the exception of Coleridge, is the most genuine poet of love, who has, for a long period, appeared among us. There is an intense and passionate beauty, a depth of affection, in his little dramatic poems, which appear even in the affectionate triflings of his gentle characters. He illustrates that holiest of human emotions, which, while it will twine itself with the frailest twig, or dally with the most evanescent shadow of creation, wasting its excess of kindliness on all around it, is yet able to 'look on tempests and be never shaken.' Love is gently omnipotent in his poems; accident and death itself are but passing clouds, which scarcely vex and which cannot harm it. The lover seems to breathe out his life in the arms of his mistress, as calmly as the infant sinks into its softest slumber. The fair blossoms of his genius, though light and trembling at the breeze, spring from a wide, and deep, and robust stock, which will sustain far taller branches without being exhausted." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thousand and One Gems of English Poetry The design of the Editor or Compiler of the following volume was to present one great panoramic view of the masterpieces of English poetry, and that of the publishers to issue it in a form and at a price which would recommend it to the taste of the rich, without placing it beyond the means of the poor. The original intention of the Editor was to commence with Chaucer and end with Wordsworth, Moore, Rogers, Hood, Campbell, and other poets of the last generation, who have recently passed from among us, thus excluding the works of living writers. To this arrangement the publishers made objection, on the ground, very easily defensible, that some of the brightest gems of the "Thousand and One" are the productions of living genius - both in Great Britain and the United States of America. The Editor yielded the point, but was met with the serious difficulty that it was not in all cases possible to include the works of living writers - even if their consent could be obtained; - firstly, because the copyrights were not always their own; - secondly, because their addresses were not obtainable without great trouble and loss of time; - and thirdly, because the modem poets, in England and America, were so numerous, that if specimens of all their poetic jewellery were got together, an undue proportion of the volume would be occupied by writers of the second half of the nineteenth century. Another difficulty which personally was more serious, existed in the dilemma in which the Editor found himself with regard to his own compositions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in English Poetry: With Short Biographical Sketches and Notes Intended as a Text-Book for the Higher Classes in Schools The work now offered to the candid consideration of parents and teachers is divided into two parts -the first consisting of miscellaneous poems and extracts; the second, of poems and extracts from the highest class of English poets, chronologically arranged from Chaucer to Burns, showing the progress of the language, and accompanied by short biographical notices and remarks on the spirit and style of each author. The specimens given in the second part will be found ample and characteristic. Those from Chaucer and Spenser occupy nearly forty pages, and are printed in the original spelling, in order to give a genuine impression of their style. The appended notes will remove every difficulty arising from the obsoleteness of much of the diction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After-Dinner Poetry and Sentiment: A Collection of Short English Verse Appropriate for After-Dinner Reading and Speaking; And Agreeable, Always This collection of short English poems represents a part of the random reading of an over-worked lawyer, who, for several years, has had little time for more ambitious reading. Many evenings, after dinner, have these light-hearted, whole-souled bards added a glow of warmth to a disposition chilled by the secular work of the day; and their beautiful words, tender sentiments, patriotic impulses, humor, passion, pathos and hilarity, have helped to drive away dull. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Odd Odes: A Short Volume of Short Poems In the preparation of the following volume, it has been the aim of the Author to construct pieces harmonizing with the Philosophy that holds the Universe, when separated into its prime factors, to consist of Time, Space, Matter, and Motion; assuming as axiomatic, That Time is infinite; Space is illimitable; Matter can not be annihilated; Motion can not be destroyed; That it is a natural law for matter to move through space, without reference to time, according to an impetus given it by a certain motion until acted upon by a second motion, when it moves in accordance to the second motion, or the second motion modified by the first, or the first modified by the second, and so on through a permutative series to Infinity. We further hold that the complement of the action of Motion upon Matter is change. And in accordance with the law we have laid down, though each succeeding change is similar in general, it differs in particulars. This differing in particulars is Evolution; and through the process of Evolution, Matter resolves itself into those phenomena that give such exquisite charm unto Nature.
