Specific attention was given to lunar-induced periodicities in TEC and to a general treatment of changes in TEC associated with variations in the height of the F-region (hmF2). In both cases, simple analytical expressions were derived from statistical analysis of the large TEC and hmF2 data bases. These relations are appropriate for updates to model predictions of average conditions during daytime hours. A study of the 'geomagnetic ordering' of TEC variability showed that real-time predictive methods can reduce up to 50% of the normal variability. A preliminary analysis of solar wind sector boundary effects suggested that sector components may order some F-region variability, though the specific relations between these effects and the geomagnetic ordering results remain to be clarified. Book excerpt: Both the total electron content of the ionosphere (TEC) and the critical frequency of the F2 layer (foF2) exhibit large day-to-day variations during quiet and active geomagnetic periods. It is of great interest to ascertain whether good correlation exists between TEC daily variability about the monthly mean and foF2 variations. With the availability of the global GPS constellation to provide instantaneous time-delay values such a correlation may enable the improvement of HF short-term predictions using passive monitoring of TEC. To determine the correlation, a pilot study was conducted using several months of TEC data taken in Haifa, Israel during 1980 as well as GPS time-delay measurements taken during the summer of 1992 in Jerusalem, Israel. The corresponding foF2 measurements were from Cape Zevgary, Cyprus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certain modern radio systems that rely on trans-ionospheric propagation require knowledge of changes in total electron content (TEC). Understanding rapidly changing, small amplitude perturbations in the ionosphere is important in order to quantify the accuracy of those systems. The main aim of this thesis is to collect statistical information on the perturbations and wave structures present in the ionosphere, for use in radio astronomy calibrations and future communication systems planning. To gain this information, TEC calculated from instruments measuring Faraday rotation on signals from geostationary satellites were used. These measurements were collected in Italy over the period of 19751982 and 1989-1991 at one minute intervals. An important class of TEC fluctuations is travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs). Here, temporal variations of mid-latitude slant TEC measurements during two solar cycle phases, i.e solar minimum in 1975-1976 and solar maximum in 1989-1990, were studied. Direct inspection of Savitzky-Golay filtered TEC data was used to extract the amplitudes of TIDs. Fourier analysis was used to extract the most dominant periods of the TIDs. Discrete Meyer wavelet together with the ANOVA method to determine TID variation changes in different parts of the day. Another class of TEC fluctuations presented in this thesis is diurnal double maxima (DDM) structures. These structures were observed during mid-day in our TEC measurements between 1975 and 1991. Verification of the DDM observations was sought by using foF2 and hmF2 measurements from an ionosonde in Rome A combination of ionospheric 3-D tomographic imaging and ray propagation theory has been used for the first time to demonstrate a method that can show how the new European radio array LOFAR will be affected by the ionosphere. This was achieved from a case study of a geomagnetic quiet day ionosphere by simulating how ray propagations, at different elevations and frequencies, will behave as they traverse the ionosphere. The important result from this study was that continuous monitoring of the telescope will be important during operation of the array if the errors introduced by the ionosphere are to be accurately corrected for. The study of TEC changes over different short time windows demonstrated that the ionosphere vastly varies over short time scales, thus making the monitory non trivial. Statistical analysis of the TEC changes will also be useful to the new European GPS augmentation system EGNOS as an indicator on whether the ionospheric measurements from the system are realistic.

Book excerpt: The Faraday rotation data were collected a Cold Bay, Alaska in an effort to correlate with similar data collected at Invercargill, New Zealand. Cold Bay and Invercargill form an approximate conjugate pair. Day-to-day variations of content at these two stations have been compared and studied. It has been found that these changes were negatively correlated during periods of magnetic quiet, uncorrelated during weak magnetic activities and increasingly positively correlated with increasing magnetic activities. In the second experiment two field stations were set up along the path of March 7, 1970 solar eclipse. These data, when combined with data obtained by others, show that the delay between the time of maximum obscuration and the time of minimum content varies systematically with latitude. The theoretical study is concerned with studying the effect of a dynamo electric field on the thermospheric winds. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses mainly on two topics: one is the ionospheric signature of solar eclipses, the second is the Hole vs Enhancement debate about earthquake precursors. On the 21st August 2017 the shadow of a total eclipse drastically changed the state of the ionosphere over the USA. This effect is visible in the total electron content (TEC) measured by ~3000 GNSS stations seeing multiple GPS and GLONASS satellites. This tremendous dataset allows high-resolution characterization of the frequency content and wavelengths -using an omega-k analysis based on 3D Fast-Fourier-Transform (FFT)- of the eclipse signature in the ionosphere in order to fully identify traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs). We confirm the generation of TIDs associated with the eclipse including TIDs interpreted as bow waves in previous studies. Additionally we reveal, for the first time, short (50-100 km) and long (500-600 km) wavelength TIDs with periods between 30 and 65 min (Eisenbeis et al., 2019). On 2nd July 2019 another total solar eclipse happened across the South American continent at magnetic conjugate latitudes as the Great American Eclipse, and consequently useful to visualize the difference response. Although for the South American eclipse we have only data from more than hundred GNSS stations and located in a zone close to the sunset, we can show the clear evidence of the ionospheric signature of the eclipse (Eisenbeis & Occhipinti in prep.a).The second major topic in this work is the still ongoing debate about the possibility of earthquake precursors. Heki (2011) sparked this debate when he published results of the Tohoku earthquake showing a TEC enhancement before the earthquake. The enhancement claimed by Heki (2011) has been interpreted as a decrease in the background TEC after the seismic event, the so called ionospheric hole in literature. The existence of the enhancement has been promoted by several papers (e.g. He & Heki, 2017) extending the observation to several events with moderate magnitude (M> 7.5) and proposes a new vision of the rupture dynamics. By trying to reproduce their results we show that the reference curve used by Heki (2011) to define the TEC background is strongly affected by the order of polynomial fit as well as the selected time windows. This shows that the TEC enhancement could be, in fact, just an artifact, subjectively selected to create the presumed precursor (Eisenbeis & Occhipinti in prep.b).
