Book excerpt: For the people of many countries and particularly the remote and mountainous areas footpaths and mule trails are the lifelines not only for the exchange of goods, but also for the sick travelling to health care centres and children going to school, etc. Despite of great efforts in road construction, a large part of the hill population will depend on the traditional trail network with reliable river crossings. It is against this backdrop that Helvetas and SDC in collaboration with the Nepalese Government have developed and standardised a relatively simple technology. This is a combination of indigenous building systems with modern engineering practices. Bridges are being built in partnership with local governments and substantial community participation.

Book excerpt: Thomas Black is Vice President of Engineering at Fairfield Electric Cooperative in Blythewood, South Carolina. He is a member and deacon at Sandy Level Baptist Church in Blythewood. He is married to Cynthia, a wonderful wife of eighteen years, and stays busy raising two teenagers, Shelley and Jordan. In 2010, he served as the project coordinator for the Gavilan-Patastule Suspended Bridge near the town of Matiguas in Nicaragua. Thomas graduated from the University of South Carolina at Lancaster in 1989 with an Associate in Science, and from Clemson University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer with the state of South Carolina. Losing two high school friends in 2009 would cause Thomas Black to reflect back not only on his childhood but on how short life really is. It would cause him to take a fresh look at his own life, at the accomplishments at his job, and ask himself a question: "Is this it; is this all there is to life-money and daily routines?" Then, as he sat at the computer late one night in March of 2010, searching his mind for answers, he fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, somewhat startled, he quickly realized what had just happened-Jesus had given him a life vision. He prayed that night for God to give him another mountain to climb and a physical sign that he was being called "out of the boat." The answers to those two questions came, with God not only showing him the mountain and the physical sign he had prayed for but taking him on a faith journey that would change his life forever. Then in September, after venting in an e-mail to his pastor about his unanswered prayers for another church to become involved in the mission project and for the fundraising to end with a miracle that only God could do, God provided answers to both of those prayers-the next night! For Thomas, 2010 would quickly become a spiritual marker. Ten One-Dollar Bills not only tells the story of this incredible journey but reminds us that life is a journey, not a destination, and as with any journey, serving the Lord + loving people = purpose. We are all challenged to "get out of the boat"-move beyond comfort-love without limit-that is where we'll discover not only who we truly are, but the bounty of Christ. REVIEW: "Read the book from cover to cover. An absolutely amazing and compelling story. The courage you have shown in your walk with the Lord is very inspiring to me. And when reading it, in between tears and joy, all I felt was God's healing grace. Thank you so much." -Ken Frantz

Book excerpt: Marvin Denmark, a builder and craftsman with 45+ years of experience, demonstrates the process he used to design and construct a small cable suspension bridge. This book includes some suspension bridge history along with engineering considerations, then explains and illustrates with diagrams and full-color photos the step by step process that was used to complete the project. His blog, wildcatman.wordpress.com, has excerpts from the book, a new cable locking system design, and a recent price list for parts for his bridge. A trailer for the cable locking system including video of the bridge building process is here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLXrzC9K5wQ Anyone who is looking for ideas for a footbridge that is relatively easy to build without the use of heavy equipment or difficult to replace components may benefit from the design in this book and by using the patented "cable locking system."

Book excerpt: Timber's strength, light weight, and energy-absorbing properties furnish features desirable for bridge construction. Timber is capable of supporting short-term overloads without adverse effects. Contrary to popular belief, large wood members provide good fire resistance qualities that meet or exceed those of other materials in severe fire exposures. From an economic standpoint, wood is competitive with other materials on a first-cost basis and shows advantages when life cycle costs are compared. Timber bridges can be constructed in virtually any weather conditions, without detriment to the material. Wood is not damaged by continuous freezing and thawing and resists harmful effects of de-icing agents, which cause deterioration in other bridge materials. Timber bridges do not require special equipment for installation and can normally be constructed without highly skilled labor. They also present a natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance, particularly in natural surroundings. The misconception that wood provides a short service life has plagued timber as a construction material. Although wood is susceptible to decay or insect attack under specific conditions, it is inherently a very durable material when protected from moisture. Many covered bridges built during the 19th century have lasted over 100 years because they were protected from direct exposure to the elements. In modem applications, it is seldom practical or economical to cover bridges; however, the use of wood preservatives has extended the life of wood used in exposed bridge applications. Using modem application techniques and preservative chemicals, wood can now be effectively protected from deterioration for periods of 50 years or longer. In addition, wood treated with preservatives requires little maintenance and no painting. Another misconception about wood as a bridge material is that its use is limited to minor structures of no appreciable size. This belief is probably based on the fact that trees for commercial timber are limited in size and are normally harvested before they reach maximum size. Although tree diameter limits the size of sawn lumber, the advent of glued-laminated timber (glulam) some 40 years ago provided designers with several compensating alternatives. Glulam, which is the most widely used modem timber bridge material, is manufactured by bonding sawn lumber laminations together with waterproof structural adhesives. Thus, glulam members are virtually unlimited in depth, width, and length and can be manufactured in a wide range of shapes. Glulam provides higher design strengths than sawn lumber and provides better utilization of the available timber resource by permitting the manufacture of large wood structural elements from smaller lumber sizes. Technological advances in laminating over the past four decades have further increased the suitability and performance of wood for modern highway bridge applications.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
