This term is a relatively recent addition to the nomenclature of the city. It refers to a section of High Street, the city's main drag, stretching north from I-670 to about 5th Ave. This area is now known as the arts district of the city. The surrounding residential neighborhoods, Victorian Village and Italian Village are communities inhabited by a mixture of classes and peoples. It was on one of the streets in Italian Village, Warren Street, that I grew up, just one block from High Street, barely more than a mile from the Statehouse at Broad and High. In addition to the many wonderful memories of my childhood, I can vaguely recall darker shades as well. My parents worked to protect me from the dangers of the world, but I was not blind to them, I knew that it was not safe to be out after dark. When we moved into the area in 1985, the neighborhood was rough, by the time we left in 2002, the Short North was one of the pearls of the city. What were those changes that occurred while I was growing up and before? Who were the movers and shakers? Where did the money come from to update and improve the area? More importantly, what were the results of these changes? Whose lot improved by the changes in the Short North and the surrounding neighborhoods and whose lot declined? I hope to discover if those who poured time, money, and elbow grease into the neighborhood profited from their work, and if that gain came at the expense of those who had inhabited the area prior to the beginning of serious improvements in the mid to late 70s. This paper will follow the gentrification of the Short North from a neglected area of the city to one of the most beautiful and well respected. In doing so, one will be able to see the impact of private citizens, corporations, and government and the ways in which they worked that resulted in this change. Possibly, the Short North can be used as an example for other improvements in Columbus and around the country. I will be looking primarily at census data to get the raw information of the area. I will then flesh this out and get a better idea of what was really going on by incorporating photographs, paintings, neighborhood newspapers, the Columbus Dispatch, government studies of the area, and most importantly personal interviews with the people who lived through the change and pushed the development forward. In the end, I hope to have a fuller picture of the neighborhood of my childhood and what was really going on to make it the place it is today.

Book excerpt: Although health equity and diversity-focussed research has begun to gain momentum, there is still a paucity of research from health geographers that explicitly explores how geographic factors, such as place, space, scale, community, and location, inform multiple axes of difference. Such axes can include residential location, age, sex, gender, race/ethnicity, culture, religion, socio-economic status, marital status, sexual orientation, education level, and immigration status. Specifically focussing on Canada’s rapidly changing society, which is becoming increasingly pluralized and diverse, this book examines the place-health-diversity intersection in this national context. Health geographers are well positioned to offer a valuable contribution to diversity-focussed research because place is inextricably linked to differential experiences of health. For example, access to health care and health promoting services and resources is largely influenced by where one is physically and socially situated within the web of diversity. Furthermore, applying geographic concepts like place, in both the physical and social sense, allows researchers to explore multiple axes of difference simultaneously. Such geographic perspectives, as presented in this book, offer new insights into what makes diverse people, in diverse places, with access to diverse resources (un)healthy in different ways in Canada and beyond.
