Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seer, critic, lover, madwoman--the poet's sensibility gives us a chance to experience them all. This rich, wide-ranging collection of work by scores of America's contemporary poets brings you both wisdom and entertainment in short verse. In it are represented, with one poem each, the chancellors, fellows, and award winners of the Academy of American Poets since 1934. The result is a unique sampler of the various literary styles and themes that have left their marks on the past five decades. Fifty Years of American Poetry gives readers the opportunity to hear familiar voices and new ones--and encounter the great American poems that have captured both our minds and our hearts. The Academy of American Poets has as its stated purpose ''To encourage, stimulate, and foster the production of American poetry..." This was never limited to poets of any particular school, method, or category of poetry so this anthology is as representative a cross-section of American poetry in the last 50 years as any of its kind. The Academy is not a stodgy eastem provincial institution. It encourages young poets, recognizes the importance of change and growth in the poetry of America, and believes that poetry is not for poets only. This anthology was compiled on this basis. Fifty Years Of American Poetry is not only educational, but also inspirational, hopefully imbuing everyone who reads it with a sense of the dynamic and development of American poetry in the last half century. The Academy of American Poets is the only institution which could compile such a unique anthology because it is the oniy group which has consistently played a large part in the American poetry scene through its patronage to poets and its mission to make poetry an accessible and vital part of the American literary landscape. -->

In his introduction, editor and Guggenheim fellow Donald Hall, describes the face of American poetry as "subjective." The American poem “reveals through images not particular pain, but general subjective life . . . The poet uses fantasy and distortion to express feeling.”

Book excerpt: From Anne Bradstreet, who died in 1762, to Richard Wilbur, born in 1921, this anthology aims both to show what has happened in American poetry and to represent what is best in it. Minor figures, such as Freneau, Longfellow and Whittier, are seen at their best rather than their most representative historically. Whitman, William Carlos Williams, Crane and Pound, in whose longer poems much of the greatness of American poetry resides, are included by means of the best of their shorter work.

This volume brings together all of Kenneth Rexroth’s shorter poems from 1920 to the present, including a group of new poems written since the publication of Natural Numbers, drawn from seven earlier books. Among the American poets of the generation that came to prominence in the Forties, Kenneth Rexroth has been notable both for the independence of his personal voice and for his accessibility to the tradition of international avant-garde literature. He began writing and publishing in magazines at fifteen. His earliest work was personal and concrete, much like that of the Imagists. In his twenties he wrote in the disassociative style––sometimes called "literary cubism "––developed by Mallarmé, Apollinaire, and Reverdy. This was not free association, but the conscious disassociation and recombination of the elements of the poem to achieve the highest possible level of significance. With his later books Rexroth moved back to a direct and classically simple form of personal statement. In this period he wrote the great nature poems, the love poems, and the contemplative lyrics that have established his reputation as one of the most important American poets.
