Book excerpt: Hobby Farms Beef Cattle: Keeping a Small-Scale Herd for Pleasure and Profit, written by Ann Larkin Hansen, serves as an excellent introduction to raising cows for food or simply to graze while mowing and fertilizing the pasture. This colorful guide offers experienced hobby farmers and beginners all of the essential information necessary to purchase and maintain a small herd of beef cattle. While managing her own hobby farm in Wisconsin, Hansen shares her expertise in all things farm and has authored numerous books such as Making Hay, The Organic Farming Manual, and Finding Good Farmland. In this comprehensive book, Hansen corrals the hobby farmer into the world of cowboys and cowgirls: she begins, “Beef cattle are as much at home on the hobby farm as they are on the range.” This colorful primer begins with the basics, from biological traits and breeds to behavior and life cycle, and describes exactly what’s required for a hobby farmer to maintain a herd of cattle—the four F’s—fencing, feed, fields, and facilities. Given the expense involved in the purchase and maintenance of beef cattle, all hobby farmers will welcome Hansen’s sound and sensible advice on buying the right cattle, whether steer calves for meat or breeding stock for building up a herd. The buying chapter helps farmers focus on what to look for when selecting cattle; how cows, heifers, and bulls are priced; where to purchase; and how to get cattle to your farm. The feeding and nutrition of cattle is a complicated topic, and Hansen breaks it down into the three basic components that every keeper needs to understand: pasture, hay, and grain. With directness and clarity, she explains the ins and outs of grazing, selecting ideal foodstuffs, using salt and minerals, and maintaining good weight on the herd. The reader can rely on her expert advice to learn the fundamentals of handling cattle, including herding, loading, and transporting cattle, as well as keeping beef cattle healthy through preventive methods, vaccinations, parasite control and veterinary assistance. For hobby farmers planning to breed their livestock, Beef Cattle includes a chapter on pairing cows and heifers, the actual breeding, artificial insemination, the care of pregnant cows, calving, caring for the young, and weaning calves. The final chapter of the book “Marketing and Processing Your Cattle” is geared toward hobby farmers looking to get beef processed, grade meat, and sell the final product. Sidebars of fun trivia, stories from farmers, and useful advice appear throughout the handbook. A glossary of over 100 terms; an appendix of health issues; a resource section of useful websites, books, and periodicals; and a detailed index complete the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Fed Steers: A Comparison of Methods of Feeding Among common methods of beef production there is recognized the practice of short feeding or warming up of cattle. This process usually requires from 60 to 100 days and the cattle are generally mar keted in a half fat or unfinished condition. In this, as in 'most enter prises of this sort, the variations of common practice are wide. These variations are in the grade and condition of cattle selected for feeding, the methods of handling, and the rations used. Some feeders, for instance, select heavy eshy cattle of the better grades while others select cattle thin in esh, but generally mature, and of the lower grades. 'then too, the variations in the methods of handling the cat tle are wide, the chief difference being in the policy of forcing rapid and large gains by the use of a rather expensive ration as compared with that of smaller gains by the use of limited quantities of feed or less expensive feeds. The factors surrounding and the possibilities of short feeding are considerably different from those of long feeding where the cattle are fed for six months or longer and generally marketed in finished condi tion. It is not intended, however, at this time to compare the practice of short feeding with that of finishing beef cattle. We introduced this work rather to study the methods and possibilities of short feeding. To do this, a test was conducted with two carloads of cattle under conditions comparable to those existing in Illinois. In this work the relative merits of two different methods of feeding were studied and other available data were collected thus supplying a basis upon which the business of short feeding cattle may be judged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comparison of Methods of Fattening Steers in Ninety Days A large percentage of the beef cattle entering our market centers are scarcely more than half fat. Such cattle have undergone but a short grain-feeding period of from sixty to one hundred days. Owing to their condition and the length of their feeding period such cattle are generally termed Half Fat or Short Fed. The present magnitude and increasing pop ularity among cattle feeders of short feeding cattle leads one to ask the status of the business, and whether or not it is a more profitable practice than finishing beeves. Furthermore, it is a question whether or not the methods followed by the producers of finished beeves are best adapted to the short feeding process. Book excerpt: As members of the public becomes more concious of the food they consume and its content, higher standards are expected in the preparation of such food. The updated seventh edition of Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle explores the impact of cattle's biological, production, and environmental diversities, as well as variations on nutrient utilization and requirements. More enhanced than previous editions, this edition expands on the descriptions of cattle and their nutritional requirements taking management and environmental conditions into consideration. The book clearly communicates the current state of beef cattle nutrient requirements and animal variation by visually presenting related data via computer-generated models. Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle expounds on the effects of beef cattle body condition on the state of compensatory growth, takes an in-depth look at the variations in cattle type, and documents the important effects of the environment and stress on food intake. This volume also uses new data on the development of a fetus during pregnancy to prescribe nutrient requirements of gestating cattle more precisely. By focusing on factors such as product quality and environmental awareness, Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle presents standards and advisements for acceptable nutrients in a complete and conventional manner that promotes a more practical understanding and application.
