Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a scientific study of Ndau to establish, from a purely linguistic point of view, whether or not Ndau is a dialect of Shona. For the purposes of advancing an objective and coherent argument it comparatively examines lexicological, phonological, syntactic and semantic aspects of Ndau and Mainstream Shona. The study explores the historical connections between the Ndau and the Shona people. It argues that the Ndau people were originally members of the ancient Rozvi Kingdom. It also establishes cultural and linguistic contacts between the Ndau and the Nguni people. This historic contact, as widely reported by linguists and historians tremendously contributed towards Ndau's linguistic divergence from Mainstream Shona, hereafter referred to as MS. This divergence is reflected through massive lexical, phonological and semantic differences between Ndau and MS. It portrays massive lexicological differences between Ndau and MS. Phonological aspects such as phonotactics, laterality, clicks, aspiration and ejection are also depicted as showing the influence of Nguni on Ndau.

Book excerpt: Introduction: Shona or chiShona is the most widely spoken language in Zimbabwe after English. It is also generally understood by most people living in parts of western Mozampique (Tawara & Tewe dialects), northern South Africa and eastern Botswana (Kalanga & Venda dialects), and southern Zambia (Tonga dialect). The standard or mostly spoken Shona dialect is the Karanga, but each Zimbabwean province speaks it's own distinct dialect as shown below: Manicaland speaks Manyika and Ndau dialects. Masvingo and Midlands speaks Karanga/Kalanga and Venda dialects. Mashonaland East speaks Zezuru dialect. Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland West speaks Korekore dialect. Matebeleland North and South speak Ndebele, but understand standard Shona. Harare and Bulawayo metropolitans have people who speak all Shona dialects. Concept: Are you dating or married to someone from Zimbabwe? Does one of your parents speak Shona but you don't? Have you always wanted to learn Shona but can't find the right book? Have you tried learning Shona before but simply gave up? Do you already speak Shona but would like to improve your grammar knowledge? Do you dislike learning Shona by only memorizing phrases? Do you want to surprise your Zimbabwean friends and in-laws with some Shona phrases? Were you born or lived in Zimbabwe but somehow missed the opportunity to learn Shona? If you answered "YES" to any of these questions, then this book is for you. This book's concept is designed such that it makes Shona easy and fun to learn. It not only covers the most important elements of learning Shona, but also explains to you it's logic and the rules (grammar) clearly. Most chapters conclude with some usage examples or phrases to reinforce the rules and give you some Shona speaking ability immediately. This book also contains vocabulary appendix, proverbs and idioms. Use them to increase your Shona vocabulary quickly. Don't wait! Discover your Shona voice today!

Book excerpt: Shona is one of the two principal languages of Zimbabwe and extends also into adjacent areas of Mozambique. It consists of a number of dialects, but a standardized form of the language, based on the Zezuru, Manyika, and Korekore dialects is generally used in printed materials. This audio/book course, developed by the Foreign Service Institute, is intended to give the learner a start in Shona, providing him or her with the dialogs that relate to some of the situations in which he or she is likely to use the language, as well as with systematic practice on all major points of grammer.
