Book excerpt: Until relatively recently the valuable tropical montane cloud forests (hereaf ter usually referred to as TMCFs) of the world had scarcely come under the assaults experienced by the downslope montane and lowland forests. TMCFs are not hospitable environments for human occupation, and their remoteness (except in places near Andean high mountain settlements and in the Ethiopian Highlands) and difficult terrain have given them de facto protection. The ad jacent upper montane rain forests have indeed been under assault for timber, fuelwood, and for conversion to grazing and agriculture for many decades, even centuries in the Andes, but true cloud forest has only come under ex ploitation as these lower elevational resources have disappeared. They have also been "nibbled" at from above where there have been alpine grasslands under grazing pressure. Increasingly now, however, these cloud forest eco systems are being fragmented, reduced, and disturbed at an alarming rate. It is now becoming recognized that steps must be taken rapidly to increase our understanding of TMCF and to achieve their conservation, because: their water-capture function is extremely important to society; • their species endemism is high; they serve as refugia for endangered species being marginalized in these environments by increasingly transformed lower elevation ecosystems; they are relatively little studied; yet, their value to science is extremely high; they have low resilience to disturbance; vii viii Preface and many other reasons, which will be discussed subsequently in this publi cation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shola grassland-forest mosaics, also known as sholas, are unique and ecologically significant ecosystems found in the Central & Southern Western Ghats, India. These high-altitude grassland-forest mosaics are characterized by their rolling hills, dense forests, and meadows of grasses and wildflowers. They are not only aesthetically pleasing but also play a crucial role in the biodiversity of the region. They are considered biodiversity hotspots due to their remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. The formation of this unique ecosystem is a dynamic and ongoing process. It is influenced by factors such as fire, grazing by herbivores, rainfall patterns, and human activities. However, other factors like deforestation, land conversion, and invasive species can easily disrupt the delicate balance between grasslands and forests. Consequently, the conservation of this unique ecosystem is crucial for maintaining its ecological integrity and the services it provides, including biodiversity conservation, water regulation, carbon sequestration, and cultural values.

Book excerpt: In recent years, attention to climate change and its associated impacts on economic and social development has increased significantly. Extreme weather conditions worldwide are threatening the survival of sensitive species and habitats. The situation is so dire that governments, academia, and non-governmental organizations across the globe are actively working to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This book enhances understanding of environmental changes and the relative response to the socio-economic challenges of development. It provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of environmental change on natural resources and the climate, as well as discusses waste management and sustainable solutions.

Book excerpt: The Western Ghats forests are endowed with large species and habitat diversity, which is nowadays under threat by increasing demographic pressure and changing land use. To address these challenges, a novel and comprehensive approach is sought from the principles of landscape ecology. Morpho-pedological features are used to delineate landscape units all over the Western Ghats of Kerala, among which the Western Anamalai region is chosen to elucidate the relative influence of physical factors, bioclimate and anthropogenic pressures on the characteristics of natural vegetation and on the status of the vertebrate fauna. Highlighting patterns of resource utilization by proximal and distant stakeholders, the book goes about identifying value-based management zones, while proposing management strategies for conservation and sustainable development.

Book excerpt: Syzygium is a well-known source of the globally traded clove as well as the widely cultivated jambolan, water apple, rose apple, wax apple, mountain apple, and several other underutilized species. These plants have multiple uses as edible fruits, medicine, spice, food colorants, and flavorings. The Genus Syzygium: Syzygium cumini and Other Underutilized Species provides an updated, comprehensive account of S. cumini and other underutilized species from a multidisciplinary perspective. This book covers all relevant aspects including the botany, systematics, phylogeny, life history, traditional medicinal uses, phytochemical constituents, pharmacology, pharmacopeia standards, horticulture, genetic resource conservation, biocontrol, and bioremediation values. It demonstrates how Syzygium cumini and other underutilized species hold great prospect for global pharmaceutical and horticultural trade. The Genus Syzygium will serve as the standard reference for a broad range of researchers interested in the various uses of S. cumini and eight underutilized Indo-Malaysian and Australasian species of Syzygium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, ‘FORESTS OF KARNATAKA - WHY AND HOW OF WHERE THEY ARE,’ attempts at understanding the diverse forests of Karnataka, their current status, and the primary factors that led to their transformation from their pristine (original and un-spoilt) states to the present states. Although formation of different types of forest depends fundamentally upon the general climatic and soil-related factors which vary from place to place, the present conditions of the forests are to a considerable extent reflective of the treatments meted out to them over the centuries. Past treatments of the forests include past forest management practices such as forest reservation, logging, clear-felling, raising plantations, forest protection, etc. as well as other biotic factors such as shifting cultivation, expansion of agriculture, heavy withdrawals of biomass, introduction of plantation crops, recurring fires, over-grazing, encroachments, etc. As a matter of fact, we now have different types of forest in different parts of the state depending upon the nature and intensity of the past interventions. The book while analysing various factors that resulted in degradation of a vast majority of the state’s forests has also suggested ways and means of how the existing forests can be protected from further degradation, enabling them to recover and rejuvenate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate due to anthropogenic activities around the world. This book is the first volume in the new series Biodiversity Hotspots of the World, which highlights the 36 hotspot regions of the world, regions that were designated as reaping maximum benefit from preservation efforts. This series is our humble attempt to document these hotspots as a conservation and preservation measure. This first volume in the series focuses on the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, construed as forming a community of species because of their shared biogeographical history. The volume explores the diversity and conservation efforts of the extraordinarily rich species found here, including plants, many of which are found nowhere else in the world; forests, which face tremendous population pressure and have been dramatically impacted by demands for timber and agricultural land; as well as the hotspot’s diverse mammals, birds, insects, and amphibian species, and more. The volumes in this series will be essential resources for researchers and practitioners in the fields of conservation biology, ecology, and evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are mountains alive, like how trees and animals are? If they are, can they sense the destruction of the planet that is happening now, and help guide us? In this book, Godwin Vasanth Bosco presents ground-breaking evidence of these capacities existing in a remarkable mountainous landscape in India, called the Nilgiris. Based on nine years of in-depth research, Voice of a Sentient Highland captures the colossal story of the Nilgiris. Underlying geological processes are found working in volition, along with a myriad of plant ecological dynamics, to depict crucial patterns for the whole world. The story and explication of the stark patterns are woven together with images and illustrations into a rich visual narrative. The evidence presented is scientific, yet simple, and thus widely comprehensible. Vasanth finds that the voice of the mountain goes deeper than much of the current efforts for environmental and social change. Claiming that many of the `solutions' are inadequate and exacerbate decline, he translates this voice into five guides and solutions that are crucial for our collective future.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of a preliminary study of the polypore flora of Kerala mainly for a period of five years from 1983-1987. Must effort in the form of field work and laboratory work have gone into it along with exhaustive coverage of literature. Though this is primarily a study of the polypore flora of Kerala State, a good number of species recorded from here are new reports for India. Therefore, besides being a regional flora, the present work adds considerably to our knowledge of the polypores of India. As reports of polyporaceous fungi from Kerala up to this time was only six species, this presentation may serve as a base on which future workers of Kerala on this interesting group of fungi can build up. The present work contains descriptions and illustrations of 80 species of polypores belonging to 32 genera of three families viz, Ganodermataceae, Hymenochaetaceae and Polyporaceae. The book also provides a brief summary of the history and classification of the three families and a review of literature on the subject including contributions of Indian workers. Keys are provided for families, genera and species. Full synonymy and author citation are quoted for each species. Detailed descriptions, drawings and collection data are also provided. With a few exceptions descriptions are based on fresh collections made by the authors from Kerala. Part of all collections are deposited in the Herbarium of the Forest Research Institute, Dehra Dun (Herb FRI) and at the Herbarium Cryptogamme Indae Orientalis (Herb HCIO) of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. Contents Chapter 1: Introduction; Materials and methods, Physiography and vegetation of the region, Review of literature, Technical terms; Chapter 2: Systematic Account; Key to families, Introduction to families, Ganodermataceae, Hymenochaetaceae, Polyporaceae.
