Book excerpt: While square-rigged sailing ships, steamboats and ferries, and ever-larger cruise and cargo-carrying vessels have made their mark on Puget Sound's maritime history, no other vessels have captured the imagination of shore-bound seafarers like tugboats. Beginning in the 1850s when the first steam-powered tugboats arrived in the Sound from the East Coast via San Francisco, company owners and their crews competed fiercely for business, towing ships, log rafts, and barges. The magnetic attraction of powerful, tough tugs both large and small is unexplainable but enduring. This book, featuring about 200 rare historic images and carefully researched text, tells the colorful story of tug boating on Puget Sound.

Book excerpt: Now in its 5th edition, Shiphandling for the Mariner is the classic and definitive text on the art of practical shiphandling skills for large, modern commercial vessels. Written by a father and son team of pilots, along with contributions from other expert pilots and shipmasters, this compendium follows a nontechnical format that stresses maneuvers used routinely in the field. The text covers essential maneuvers used in docking, undocking, and shiphandling, plus uncommon maneuvers such as docking at single-point and multiple-buoy moorings, use of anchors in shiphandling, offshore lightering, and transiting of locks and canals. Bridge practices in pilot waters and training techniques, including simulator training are also discussed. Updated for the 5th edition: squat and under keel clearance, current practices for bridge resource management, and the use of laptop navigation systems and ECDIS in pilotage waters. Shiphandling for the Mariner is ideal for those with a foundation of practical knowledge looking to advance and master shiphandling skills that are essential to the marine profession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of tractor tugs throughout the United States for shiphandling and escort work has been a growing factor over the past several years. The West Coast has been on the leading edge in the use of these boats for tanker escort and ship assist work since the early l980s. Across the country the construction rate is now approaching ten new buildings a year and there are few signs of slowing. On the East Coast, however, tug companies have generally failed to follow in the same direction as Pacific Coast tug owners, such as Foss Maritime, Crowley Marine, and SeaSpan. Many East Coast towing companies believe that the equipment currently in use is satisfactory for the work required. It is also a general consensus that the cost of purchasing a new advanced tug is unwarranted by current demand. The Port of Charleston, South Carolina shares this same common problem with other East Coast ports such as Norfolk, Savannah, and New York. The intent of this study is to determine a possible solution for the Port of Charleston of how best to handle ships of increasing size safely, in a manner which is least expensive for the operation of the port as a whole. Currently, larger container vessels calling on the port's North Charleston Terminal are restricted in their transit times to the periods of flood tide only. Additionally, an increased number of private terminals will be increasing overall vessel calls. A suggestion will be made for the best action to take considering the proper application of tractor tugs and their specialized operating modes. This suggestion will be based on increasing the safety and efficiency of vessel transits in Charleston Harbor.

Book excerpt: An Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) tug or towboat is a high-performance vessel that is responsive, quick to maneuver and extremely powerful. In the hands of a skilled operator maneuvering these vessels looks effortless and seamless--smoothly spinning around, nimbly shifting position, having pinpoint control, all while the operator's hands move the control handles instinctively and naturally. This book takes the reader through an efficient learning sequence leading to that level of proficiency. d104, illustrations and practice drills create a clear understanding of ASD maneuvering principles and assist the reader in acquiring the intuitive hands-on feel required to operate these vessels. Each chapter covers a basic maneuvering element--steering, managing speed, stopping, hovering, lateral movement--and their application to light boat, barge and ship handling. This book is the first step for a professional mariner adding a new competency to his or her art of towing--driving a Z-drive.
