Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik), language: English, abstract: Few years ago, in 1995, I had the chance to attend the world famous “Cutty Sark Tall-Ship Races”. The regatta took us from Edinburgh in Scotland to Bremerhaven in Germany. We were sailing for nearly three days until we reached the finish in Bremerhaven. Although we had not so much good look with the wind conditions in the North Sea we, the crew and the trainees of the “Great Duchess Elizabeth” from Elsfleth in Germany, reached the 2nd place which was really good and everyone of us was really proud because famous sailing-ships like for example the “Alexander of Humboldt” known from “Beck’s” – advertisements on TV also attended this regatta. The fact that this was the first time I attended a sailing regatta and the really tall sailing-ship where I was on board, it was about 65 metres long, impressed me so much I will never forget this. And now, as I was searching for a topic and material for my paper in cultural studies I found out that Scotland is famous for his ship-building industry. There was no doubt about writing this paper about ship-building in Scotland for me because of my memories of that great regatta. What I want to do is to show the development of the ship-building industry in Scotland during the 20th century. I will direct my attention on the shipyards situated on the river Clyde, which is one of the most important rivers in Scotland. The river is situated in the west of Scotland and is very important for the industry of the town of Glasgow because it flows into the Atlantic Ocean and offers quite good conditions for yards. Therefore, it can be used for exports and imports by merchant ships. I will make clear if the ship-building industry situated there suffered under the economic decline as many other industries in Scotland did. I also would like to point out what reasons there have been that caused the decline of ship-building on the Clyde. Finally, I will give some industry solutions for solving the problems of the shipyards on the Clyde.

Book excerpt: “A worthy tribute to the John Brown company and to British shipbuilding . . . a joy to enthusiasts of the great ships of the past.”—Australian Naval Institute The Clydebank shipyard built some of the most famous vessels in maritime history—great transatlantic liners like Lusitania, Queen Mary and QE2, and iconic warships like the battlecruiser Hood, and Britain’s last battleship, HMS Vanguard. Starting life as J & G Thomson in 1847, the business acquired its more famous persona when taken over in 1899 by the Sheffield-based steelmaker John Brown & Co, which enhanced the yard’s existing reputation for turning out first-class products, both naval and mercantile. This book charts the fortunes of the company in terms of its business development, its management and personnel, as well as the great variety of ships it built during the century and a quarter of its existence. It also tells a wider story of the rise to world domination of the British shipbuilding industry and its eventual decline and collapse in the post-war decades, as reflected in the experience of John Brown. Written by an acknowledged authority on Clydeside shipbuilding, the book was originally published in a limited edition in 2000, but this reprint is entirely new and revised, although it retains all the original photographs from the yard’s own unrivaled collection. “Essential to anyone’s maritime collection.”—Sea Breezes “The profusely illustrated, beautifully produced and very detailed story of John Brown & Company.”—Army Rumour Service

Book excerpt: Scotland's maritime heritage is a highly significant one, embracing as it does a quite outstanding contribution to Britain's development both as an empire and as the world's leading maritime power in the nineteenth century.Scottish engineering, ship-owning and operating, as well as business and entrepreneurial skills, played a major part in the success of the Merchant Navy, while Scottish emigrants took skills to every corner of the world, creating trade and wealth both abroad and at home. In terms of engineering, 'Clyde-built' was the Kitemark for the shipbuilding industry the world over. Scottish shipowners included household names such as Allan, Anchor, Donaldson and Henderson, while Scotsmen were instrumental in founding and, for much of the time, managing Cunard, British India, P & O, Orient, Glen and many other 'English' companies. The author tells an exhilarating story of energy and inventiveness, describing the remarkable navigational skills of the highlanders and the technological and business skills of the lowlanders, and relates the early development of the steamship, the impact of emigration, the involvement with exploration and the development of trade routes, and the final flowering of the world's last great iron sailing ships. And the evidence is still here, in the Cutty Sark, the Denny test tank at Dumbarton, and the Burrell Collection at Pollock, all reminders of a remarkable story. As seen in Scottish Memories Magazine.

Over a period of 200 years there were more than 250 shipbuilders on the Clyde alone, between them building over 30,000 different types of vessel: passenger ships, cargo liners, cross-channel ferries, tramp steamers, sailing ships, tugs, dredgers, and warships of all kinds from battleships to submarines. This book charts the big story of shipbuilding in Scotland, covering both the social and engineering aspects, and highlighting the transition from wood and sail to iron and steam.

Book excerpt: This volume tackles the history of Shipbuilding in the United Kingdom in the Nineteenth Century by breaking it down into six regions:- Northeast England; Southeast England; Southwest England; Northwest England; Scotland; and Ireland. The intent is to determine the different economic, social, and geographic factors that contribute to the varied rates of rise and decline of Shipbuilding across the United Kingdom, rather than view the nation’s shipbuilding history as a singular narrative, which risks omitting the complexity of each region. Each region has been ascribed an author, and each author seeks to establish the quantitative and qualitative nature of output in their region, assessing individual factors of production, the character of the enterprises, and the nature of the market.
