Book excerpt: The Port Jersey channel, Bayonne, NJ, is part of the New York Harbor complex, the leading port on the east coast of the United States. It is one of several channels branching off to the left from the main Anchorage channel south of the Statue of Liberty. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is developing the channel for containership terminals. The existing channel is 35 ft deep below MLW and approximately 750 ft wide with a 1,200-ft turning basin at the end. The proposed improvements include deepening to 41 ft with a channel width of 300 ft The purpose of the simulation study was to determine the effect of deepening the channel and to aid in design of the dimensions and alignment of the recommended channel. The ship simulation study was conducted by local tug pilots on the simulator and used tidal current data from a mathematical model using the TABS-2 modeling system. Two containership models loaded to 35- and 38-ft draft were used in the existing and proposed channel test scenarios, respectively. Channel widths tested included the existing channel and widths of 250,300,370, and 440 ft. Test results used to evaluate the alternative channel plans included pilot ratings, composite ship track plot results, and statistical analysis of key ship navigation parameters, such as rudder angles, ship speed, ship heading, drift angles, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Port Jersey located in New York Harbor is being evaluated for deepening and realignment. The purpose of the proposed improvements is to allow a large class of container ships to use the port. The realignment is necessary because the future ships will be too long to use the existing turning basin and will have to back out of the port. To evaluate these improvements a real-time ship simulation study was undertaken. Simulation models were developed for both Port Jersey's present and future conditions. Pilots from New York Harbor operated the simulator as they would in real life. Based upon these simulations, a final improved channel was developed.

Book excerpt: The ship simulation study of St. Johns River, Jacksonville, Florida, included channel reaches from the outer entrance channel at the sea buoy to downtown Jacksonville, approximately 30 nautical miles. The study was performed to determine the effects of deepening the navigation channel from -38 ft msl to 42 ft msl. The proposed dredging would maintain the existing bank lines and bank slopes, extending the existing bank slope down to the deeper channel bottom, effectively reducing the channel width from 24 to 40 ft dependent on the bank slope. The initial plans examined were to deepen the entire channel without any widening and to deepen and widen the entire channeL Preliminary investigations conducted with pilots from the St Johns Pilots Association indicated that the unwidened channel would not seriously impact navigation, except for two away traffic. A third plan was developed that widened and deepened the channel reaches east of the Dames Point Bridge and only deepened the reaches west of the bridge, along with some realignments of reaches both east and west of the bridge. This plan, Plan C, was found to provide generally improved navigation as compared with the existing conditions.

Book excerpt: The Port of Baltimore was established in 1706 and is one of America's busiest deep-water ports. It is situated in a sheltered harbor and is easily accessed by major American and foreign ports. Its 45-mile shoreline supports many terminals for commercial trade, as well as public and private cargo terminals. In 1990, the main shipping channel from Cape Henry to Fort McHenry was dredged to a depth of 15 m (50 ft), allowing deeper-draft vessels to entry the port. In addition, new terminals were constructed, and public and private marine terminals were expanded. In 1997, the U.S. Army Engineer District, Baltimore, proposed a channel improvement project to widen the Fast and West Dundalk Channels and the connecting channel, which joins the Seagirt and West Dundalk Channels. The south Locust Point improvements would include widening the Fruit Pier Channel. In addition, the construction of a 15-m- (50-ft- ) deep, 366-m- (1,200-ft- ) square tuning basin at the head of the Fort McHenry Channel was proposed. The improvements also included deepening and widening portions of Anchorages #3 and #4. The purpose of this simulation study was to evaluate the widening and realignment proposed by the District Office.

Baldwin Ship Channel and to study the impact of the deepened channel on the navigability of large tankers inbound to the Long Wharf docking facility near Richmond Harbor. The present channel and maneuvering area is 35 ft deep and is inadequate for the larger tankers bringing crude oil from the Alaskan North Slope. The San Francisco District has proposed to deepen the channel to 45 ft deep. The authorized 35-ft-deep channel was simulated to verify the ship simulator setup as well as establish the base maneuvering strategies, and the proposed 45-ft-deep channel was simulated to study the proposed conditions. In addition to the tankers, containerships navigating into Richmond Harbor entrance channel were also simulated to investigate the impact of channel deepening on other ships using the maneuvering area. Book excerpt: The US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) ship simulator was used to evaluate the proposed channel widening of the Savannah Harbor from Fig Island Turning Basin to Kings Island Turning Basin. The widening would extend the north side of the channel 100 ft. The present channel width of 400 ft causes difficulties in the maneuvering of the 950-ft New York Class containerships that began calling in Savannah approximately 2 years ago. For this reason, the simulation study was conducted using a numerical model of this containership. To generate channel currents for input into the simulation, a hydrodynamic finite element model of the Savannah Harbor was developed as part of the study. Boundary conditions for this model were obtained from a larger numerical model of the entire Savannah estuary system developed by the WES Hydraulics Laboratory Math Modeling Group. Keywords: Channels hydraulic engineering; Finite element method; Ships maneuverability; Savannah Harbor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A navigation investigation of the proposed channel improvements to Lorain Harbor, Lorain, OH, was conducted. The authorized project called for three bank cuts. The research consisted of a two-phase ship simulation study. The purpose of the ship simulation study was to test the proposed bank cuts and recommend design modifications that would allow safe and efficient use of the channel by the 767-ft vessels currently used in Lorain Harbor. Two retired shipmasters from the USS Great Lakes Fleet (GLF) participated in Phase 1, which was designed as a low-cost study providing a rapid assessment of the proposed design changes and potential project benefits. The Phase 1 testing was conducted with three different channel designs: the existing channel, the authorized project, and a design suggested by a shipmaster who navigates the river. Each numerical model began at the lake approach channel and continued to the upper turning basin. Phase 1 raised questions about the transit time benefits of the study.

Book excerpt: A real-time ship simulation investigation of the proposed designs for deepening and narrowing the navigation channel for Grand Haven Harbor, Michigan, was conducted. The purpose of the study was to determine if the navigation channel could be deepened from 21 to 27 ft and narrowed from the existing 300 ft to 225 ft and maintain adequate safety. A numerical model of the existing channel from Lake Michigan to the supper limit of the maintained channel was developed. The numerically generated currents were validated independently by two test pilots from the study area since no recorded current velocities exist. They independently reached the same conclusion that the currents should be approximately 1.1 mph. The pilots tested the existing 300-ft channel and two different 225-ft channel proposals. Testing was performed on the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station Ship simulator. These tests demonstrated that either of the 225-ft channel proposals would be acceptable at a 27-ft depth the channel through the jetties should be centered between the jetties, and range markers should be provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Savannah District requested a navigation simulation study of Brunswick Harbor to determine both channel and bend widening requirements throughout the channel based on, primarily, real-time simulator experiments with the design ships, and the best design and placement of the East River turning basin. Navigation conditions (existing and proposed) were conducted using real-time piloted ship simulation experiments. A field data collection verified and adjusted a numerical hydrodynamic model of the tidal currents and the tidal sound and river system; and a hydrodynamic model of the existing and plan conditions was developed and adjusted based on field data. Also, two hydrodynamic models of design ships (a car-carrier for analyzing the South Brunswick Channel leading to the existing Colonels Island car facility, and a bulk carrier for analyzing the East River channel and turning basin) for experimenting due to the different navigation concerns associated with each ship type were developed. Channel deepening in Turtle River above the Brunswick and South Brunswick Rivers junction was not included in the study.

Book excerpt: A real time ship simulation investigation of the proposed design for deepening and widening the Alafia River Channel and turning basin, Tampa Bay, Florida, was conducted. Existing and proposed channel depths are 30 ft and 41 ft, respectively. The purpose of the study was to determine effects of proposed improvements on navigation with larger design ships and to assist in optimizing channel width and turning basin configuration required to efficiently navigate the study area. A numerical model of the existing channel from Hillsborough Bay Channel Cut C to the harbor area was developed. The model was verified by two members of the Tampa Bay Pilots Association. Numerical models of two plans were also developed. The investigation was conducted in Vicksburg, MS, on the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station ship simulator.
