Book excerpt: The Houston/Galveston Navigation Channels are located along the Gulf of Mexico Coast in eastern Texas. These channels include the Entrance Channels, the Bar Channels (Bolivar Roads Area), Galveston Ship Channel, Texas City Channel, the Gulf Intercostal Waterway (GIWW), and the Houston Ship Channel (HSC), which branches off the Bolivar Roads Channel, traverses Galveston Bay, and ends in Houston. The existing Entrance Channels are 42 ft deep and 800 ft wide. Phase I and Phase II of a proposed improvement project will deepen them to 47 ft and 52 ft, respectively. The Phase I and II Entrance Channels will be extended into the Gulf of Mexico to naturally deep water. The Galveston Ship Channel is presently 40 ft deep and 1,100 ft wide. Phases I and II of the proposed improvements will deepen the channel to 45 and 50 ft, respectively, while decreasing the width to 450 and 550 ft, respectively. The U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station conducted a navigation study to evaluate the effects of the proposed improvements on navigation. This study was conducted at WES using a real-time ship simulator. Deep-draft navigation, Ship simulation.

Book excerpt: The Houston/Galveston Navigation Channels are located along the Gulf of Mexico Coast in eastern Texas. These channels include the Entrance Channel, the Bar Channels (Bolivar Roads Area), Galveston Channel, the Texas City Channel, the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway (GIWW), and the Houston Ship Channel (HSC), which branches off the Bolivar Roads Channel, traverses Galveston Bay, and ends in Houston. The HSC consists of approximately 65 miles of improved deep-draft channels. The present channel is 400 ft wide and 40 ft deep at mean low tide for most of the channel distance. The project design calls for the channel to be improved in two phases. The Phase I channel is to be 530 ft wide and 45 ft deep, and the Phase 2 channel is to be 600 ft wide and 50 ft deep. A navigation study was conducted for the Houston/Galveston Navigation Channels, including a real-time ship simulation of the project area, to determine a cost- effective channel design for safe navigation. The Texas City Channel and the section of the HSC past Boggy Bayou are not included in the improvement project. The HSC is designed for two-way deep-draft traffic. The capability of large loaded vessels to meet and pass is the primary factor in determining safe channel width. In the highly restricted channel, both bank and ship interaction effects are significant factor in conducting bow-on meeting and passing maneuvers.

Book excerpt: The Houston/Galveston Navigation Channels are located along the Gulf of Mexico Coast in eastern Texas. These channels include the Entrance Channel, the Bar Channels (Bolivar Roads Area), Galveston Channel, the Texas City Channel, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW), and the Houston Ship Channel (HSC) which branches off the Bolivar Roads Channel, traverses Galveston Bay, and ends in Houston. The intersection of the HSC and GIWW is a navigation concern because of the high volume of towboat and ship traffic in the area. Tows turning from the GIWW into the HSC block the ship lanes while making the turn toward Houston. A navigation study was conducted for this intersection, including a real-time ship simulation of the project area, to determine a cost-effective channel design for safe navigation. Considerations in designing the turn include: strong currents, ship-to-tow interactions, bank effects, and channel marking. Hydrodynamic modeling of Galveston Bay was a key element of the study and provided currents for the navigation design. Deep-draft navigation, Houston, Galveston, Navigation channels, Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Ship simulation.

Book excerpt: The Houston-Galveston Channel Project consists of about 65 miles of deepwater channels leading from the Gulf of Mexico to the Houston Turning Basin at the head of navigation and Galveston Channel, a side channel from Bolivar Roads to Galveston Harbor. The present channel dimensions are 400 ft wide and 40 ft deep at the mean low tide for most of the channel. The Galveston Channel is 1,125 ft wide and 40 ft deep at the mean low tide. This study used the TABS-MD numerical modeling system to simulate water levels and currents of different channel design conditions for Houston Galveston navigation channels. These hydrodynamic conditions were used in a separate ship simulator study. Water level measurements at six tide gages and velocity measurements taken during a 14-hr survey on 18-20 July 1990 at five current stations were used to verify the model. A different subset of water levels from 20-22 November 1990 were used to further verify the model. Galveston Bay, Hydrodynamic model, Navigation channel.

Book excerpt: A field hydraulic data collection program was conducted in Galveston Bay from 12 July 1990 until 16 January 1991. During this period eight current meters, six water level recorders, six salinity meters, and one wind speed and direction recorder were deployed and maintained in the bay. The current meters recorded salinity in addition to current speed and direction, and four of the water level recorders also measured salinity. Approximately half the gages were maintained at the same location for the entire survey period, while the remaining gages were redeployed at new locations at the midpoint of the survey. This redeployment allowed different areas of the bay to be monitored. On 19-20 July 1990, intensive over-the-side measurements were made for a lunar day (25 hours) from five boats stationed along the Houston Ship Channel. From each boat, hourly vertical profiles were made at two to four stations. The vertical profiles consisted of current speed and water sample at five depths (three depths if water depth was less than 35 ft). The water samples were analyzed for salinity and total suspended matter. These data are to be used in the verification of numerical models of Galveston Bay and in increased understanding of the physical processes working in the bay. Appendix A presents the data collection equipment and laboratory analysis procedures, and Appendix B describes the Estuarine Boundary Layer Instrumentation System (EBIS).

This book was released on 1995 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the testing program conducted to evaluate the impact of enlargement of the Houston-Galveston Navigation Channel on the salinity and hydrodynanuc fields of tidally influenced Galveston Bay. The present channel norninal dimensions are 40 ft deep at mean low water (mlw) and 400 ft wide. The proposed enlargements tested are for a channel 45 ft deep at mlw and 530 ft wide (Phase I) and 50 ft deep and 600 ft wide (Phase II). Current plans do not include the Phase II enlargement. Salinity fields for these channel configurations and the existing channel dimensions are compared. In a separate study the results from these simulations were used to drive an ecosystem model to predict oyster production. Testing conditions included tidal conditions and winds for the year 1984. The freshwater inflows (developed outside this study) were tested for low-, medium-, and high-flow years. Additionally, since water demand in the future is expected to modify freshwater distribution and quantities, future distributions for the test year 1999 (Wallisville Dam in place), 2024. The code used (RMAlO-WES) is a Galerkin-based finite element solution to simulate three-dimensional (3-D) unsteady open-channel flow. The code represents 3-D hydrodynamics using conservation of fluid mass, horizontal momentum, and salinity/temperature transport equations subject to the hydrostatic assumption. (MM).
