Book excerpt: The book on ‘Shifting Cultivation and Tribal Culture of Tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, India’ has been written mainly to show how the traditional life of Tribal people of state of Arunachal Pradesh, India are very much attached to shifting cultivation. Shifting cultivation is more a culture than agriculture to these people. The beliefs and practices, art and crafts, food habit, the technique of hunting and fishing, traditional healing, food habits and even the sentiments and emotions of the people are either directly or indirectly related to shifting cultivation. The book has also mentioned how centuries of practicing same system has helped these people to learn many secret of nature, which is termed as Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). Book has mentioned how, many scholars have misconception about shifting cultivation without knowing much about it. Farmers not only cut the trees, but also grow crops and domesticate animals. They are the maintainers of crop diversities as they grow more than 30 crops. They do not use any chemical fertilizers and pesticides to increase the productivity. It has also mentioned that shifting cultivation is practiced in the forest. In other way it can be said, shifting cultivation is there, so is the forest. They do not remove the forest permanently like agro-forestry and many other commercial farming. They fallow the forest to allow to regenerate. Secondary forest during fallow period can support more organisms due large plant diversity. The whole book has been divided into seven chapters comprised of Introduction, Origin of farmers and farming, Beliefs and Practices, General Life of Farmers, Different Stages of Shifting Cultivation, Shifting Cultivation and Allied Activities and Conclusion. The meaning of local terms has been given in the glossary at the end and instruction to pronounce local words is given in the front. The book is one way of documentation of culture of shifting cultivators of Tribal ethnic groups of Arunachal Pradesh India. One day shifting will meet its natural death. The book would be of immense importance to researchers and people who had less exposure to their own society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting cultivation supports around 200 million people in the Asia-Pacific region alone. It is often regarded as a primitive and inefficient form of agriculture that destroys forests, causes soil erosion and robs lowland areas of water. These misconceptions and their policy implications need to be challenged. Swidden farming could support carbon sequestration and conservation of land, biodiversity and cultural heritage. This comprehensive analysis of past and present policy highlights successes and failures and emphasizes the importance of getting it right for the future. This book is enhanced with supplementary resources. The addendum chapters can be found at: www.cabi.org/openresources/91797

Book excerpt: Arunachal Pradesh, the northernmost state of the Northeast region of India is the homeland of a number of tribes and sub-tribes. The state is a canvas of colourful communities with their habitats amid the lofty sierra, dense forests and roaring rivers with variegated socio-cultural milieu with a congregation of diversified socio-religious beliefs and practices. Such societies are of immense anthropological interest. But, till date hardly any volume is available in the market which exclusively covers the different aspects and heritage of the various tribal communities of the state. This is a book where views and research papers of a number of anthropologists working on the tribal groups in the different parts of Arunachal Pradesh, are systematically arranged for the benefit of the administrators, social scientists and the students of anthropology to understand the ingenious thinking of the indigenous people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together multidisciplinarity, desirability and possibility of consilience of borderline studies which are topically diverse and methodologically innovative. It includes contemporary tribal issues within anthropology and other disciplines. In addition, the chapters underline the analytical sophistication, theoretical soundness and empirical grounding in the area of emerging core perspectives in tribal studies. The volume alludes to the emergence of tribal studies as an independent academic discipline of its own rights. It offers the opportunity to consider the entire intellectual enterprise of understanding disciplinary and interdisciplinary dualism, to move beyond interdisciplinarity of the science-humanities divide and to conceptualise a core of theoretical perspectives in tribal studies. The book proves an indispensable reference point for those interested in studying tribes in general and who are engaged in the process of developing tribal studies as a discipline in particular.
