Book excerpt: Wisdom. Weaving. Warfare. Known to the Greeks as Athena, and to the Romans as Minerva, she leapt fully grown from the skull of the Lord of Thunder. Frighteningly intelligent, quick-witted and fiercely loyal, she is a Goddess who watches over heroes, warriors, and artisans alike. A Goddess of the mind, she admires and rewards cleverness and creativity. And, while she inspires intense devotion in ancient and modern polytheists, she also inspires passionate debate. Is she a friend to women, or does she always favor the father? When she transformed Medusa into a gorgon and Arachne into a spider, was she motivated by compassion or something else? And what of her relationships with her fellow Deities, such as Hephaistos, Ares, and Aphrodite? Are they adversarial, antithetical, or complementary? Within these pages, you will find poems of praise and rites in her honor. You will also find essays and personal reflections that question the Goddess, that challenge her, that analyze the myths around her and what they mean to us, and what they reveal about the Goddess herself. All of these are offered to her with an open heart, and a sincere questioning mind - which we hope she will find as pleasing as any reverent hymn. All hail Athena, Keen-Eyed and Ever-Curious.

Book excerpt: As a young writer I ask myself this question how many people out there lack wisdom and encouragement? How many people do not know what the wisdom of the Lord is? There are so many people in life who are struggling and are not sure which way to turn. There are those who are hurting and discouraged who need God's healing touch. There are those who need to be uplifted in God's word. The good news is there is hope in this life in which we live. You can live in total victory. In this poem book there is words of wisdom. You will find words of encouragement for different situations in your life. With God you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. There is nothing to big for God. For even your greatest pain he can surely take. My name is Holly Ironfield. I am 23 years old. I was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. I graduated from High School in 2004. I am happily married to my husband Josh and have been blessed with my 3-year-old son Landon. I accepted Jesus as my Savior when I was 10 years old in 1995. I love Jesus with all of my heart. I go to church and love to serve at the church that we attend. I enjoy talking to people about Jesus and the great things that he has done in my life. I enjoy encouraging people in their walk with Jesus and praying for them. I also enjoy sharing the free gift of salvation with others. Jesus strongly spoke to my heart and placed a deep desire in my heart about writing this poem book.

Included are several hundred alphabetically arranged entries for the gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines, and places of classical myth and legend. Each entry includes a brief account of the myth, with reference to the Greek and Latin sources. The entry then discusses how Medieval and Renaissance commentators interpreted the myth, and how poets, dramatists, and artists employed the allegory in their art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beginning of Wisdom, the first novel from future Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Vincent Bent, was published in 1921 just after the author's graduation from Yale University. Reflecting the influence of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the semiautobiographical work chronicles the coming of age of Philip Sellaby, who, as a young boy, "doesn't know what it is to be bored, has a quantity of humorous vanity, considerable physical recklessness and is beginning to develop from much scattered and unchecked reading an ashamed fierce curiosity in regard to matters of sex." STEPHEN VINCENT BENT (1898-1943) was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. A prolific poet, novelist, and writer of short stories, he is best known as the 1929 Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the epic Civil War poem "John Brown's Body" and the short story "The Devil and Daniel Webster." He was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1929 and to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1938. He won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for Western Star, a volume of verse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Author John Gill (1697 - 1771) was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. In his youth, he attended Kettering Grammar School, mastering the Latin classics and learning Greek by age eleven. The young scholar also had a love for Hebrew which would follow him throughout his life. At about twelve years of age, Gill heard a sermon from his pastor, William Wallis, whose text came from Genesis 3:9, "And the Lord called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou?" He reflected often on the message of Wallis' sermon and it eventually led to his conversion. It was not until seven years later, however, that young John made a public profession of his faith in Christ, when he was almost nineteen years of age. His first pastoral work was as an intern at age twenty one, and he later became a pastor in Southwark, England. His pastorate lasted 51 years. Gill was an English Bible scholar, and a prolific writer who authored among other things, an expository commentary on the entire Bible. John Gill was a profound scholar whose ministry in some fashion still touches millions of people worldwide. About this Book Unlike human wisdom, the Book of Proverbs is of divine inspiration. The Book of Wisdom is presented as a devotional from John Gill's commentary on these Proverbs. Book of Wisdom is a tribute offered by the James J. MacCabbee Company to Pastor John Gills' lifetime of brilliant work. As Proverbs 8:1, "Doth not Wisdom cry?" This daily devotional is prepared for governmental leaders, leaders in the news and entertainment industries, clergy and laypersons; employees and employers; spouses, parents and children. In fact Wisdom is offered to "anyone who has ears to hear" (see Matthew 13:9). Those who receive such Wisdom as presented here will not be disappointed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This message from Chuck Pierce and Robert Heidler likens our spiritual defense to that of the children of Israel while in battle. Within the ranks there were those who carried huge shields to protect the bulk of the army. And just as we fight spiritual battles today, there is a mighty shield we can carry to protect us. This shield of faith is one of the main ways we can resist our enemy's attacks. We are fully capable of resisting the enemy's attacks, but we must first be able to recognize how Satan fights. His main weapons are to create fear and doubt in us and to tempt us to become complainers and murmurers. If we succumb, our faith is weakened. The keys to increasing our faith are found in knowing the Word of God, which engenders praise, thankfulness, trust, and obedience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These thrilling, whimsically and action packed anthology of adventurous stories bring to life some vital aspects of traditional African culture. These wonderful African traditional stories offer a rare glimpse into a portion of African traditional culture not often openly discussed outside many remote villages they originate from. As you peer through these pages be prepared to be thrilled and amazed as some aspects of ancient African culture are brought to life through amazing story telling. Most of the stories are used to reinforce the traditional virtues in these tribal societies. Some of the stories illustrate and exemplify what happens to youngsters when they choose to follow the century old African tradition and culture; and when another youngster deviates from the traditional African values of respecting and honoring their elders. And yes, some of the stories are told to young girls in rural areas as cautionary tales to keep them from marrying total strangers outside their respective tribes. Most of the stories and folktales here are fictionalized and many characters borrowed from various cultures to entertain the reading audience, while imparting numerous traditional virtues and morals into the youngsters. The ancient traditional African elders strongly believe in inculcating and ingraining these societal virtues into their youngsters, because like the ancient Greek philosophers, the African elders deeply concurred with Plato’s enunciation that: “Now since men are by nature acquisitive, jealous, combative and erotic, how shall we persuade them to behave themselves? By the Policeman’s omnipresent club? It is a brutal method, costly and irritating. There is a better way, and this is by lending to the moral requirements of the community.”
