Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paradox Basin is a geologic area in southeastern Utah defined by the location of Pennsylvanian salt deposits. The Basin is bounded by the Uncompahgre Uplift to the east and north, the San Rafael Swell, the Circle Cliffs Uplift and the Monument Upwarp to the west, and the Defiance-Zuni Uplift and the Four Corners Platform to the south. The basin is divided into two principal tectonic subprovinces - the Paradox Fold and Fault belt to the north and the Blanding Basin to the south. The Fold and Fault Belt is an area of dominantly northwest-trending salt-cored anticlinal structures. These structures are rooted in the Precambrian basement and have influenced the stratigraphy (deposition) and structure (tectonics) of the Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and younger formations deposited across them. The Blanding Basin was also a structural low during Pennsylvanian time. It is primarily an area of carbonate-organic mound (bioherm and bioclastic mound) deposition, which forms the most common type of reservoir for petroleum found in the region. This study includes an individual oil and gas field report and a presentation of the regional structure. Sixty-three individual petroleum fields were identified in the Utah portion of the Paradox Basin, and each are represented by data outlining the nature of the petroleum reservoir, along with its geology, structure, and location. The majority of the fields are located in the Blanding Basin subprovince. The regional structure is represented by a structure map of the Ismay zone of the Paradox Formation (Plate 1), elevation at which first salt is encountered in the Paradox Formation (Plate 2), and an isopach map of the salt bed interval in the Paradox Formation (Plate 3). The Ismay Member was chosen to be a representative oil horizon of the Paradox Basin and illustrates the predominant tectonic structures as well as the subtle petroleum related structures. The isopach map of the salt bed interval determines the evaporite boundary in the Basin and illustrates the fold and fault subprovince and corresponding structures. 162 pages + 4 plates

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book you need to improve your interpretations of carbonates. Using a systematic treatment of the entire subject of carbonate depositional environments, this unique book is specifically designed for use by the non-specialist -- the petroleum geologist or field geologist -- who uses carbonate depositional environments in facies reconstructions and environmental intepretations. This classic work, covering settings from non-marine to deep water, focuses on the recognition of depositional environments with extenive use of color diagrams and photographs of sedimentary structures and facies assemblages. Although the ultimate purpose of this text is to improve exploration for oil, gas, and mineral deposits, it also includes environments not normally considered to be particularly prospective for oil and gas in an attempt to provide as complete a framework as possible for recognition of environments. Suitable for use as a textbook, this book is also an invaluable reference fo the specialist or advanced graduate student. It provides perspective on large-scale influences on carbonate depositional envionments such as tectonic patterns, fluctuations of sea level, variations of climate, and evolutionary patterns of organisms. --

Book excerpt: This special publication Perspectives in Carbonate Geologyis a collection of papers most of which were presented at asymposium to honor the 80th birthday of Bob Ginsburg at the meetingof Geological Society of America in Salt Lake City in 2005. Themajority of the papers in this publication are connected with thestudy of modern carbonate sediments. Bob Ginsburg pioneered theconcept of comparative sedimentology - that is using the modern tocompare to and relate to and understand the ancient. These studiesare concerned with Bob's areas of passion: coral reefs andsea-level; submarine cementation and formation of beach rock;surface sediments on Great Bahama Bank and other platforms; originof ooids; coastal sediments; formation of stromatolites; impact ofstorms on sediments; and the formation of dolomite. The remainderof the papers apply the study of modern environments andsedimentary processes to ancient sediments. Book excerpt: This report describes low-cost, innovative, non-invasive, surface geochmcial techniques for hydrocarbon exploration in the environmentally sensitive northern Paradox Basin of southeastern Utah. Exploration for Mississippian Leadville Limestone-hosted hydrocarbon reservoirs in the basin is high risk in terms of cost and low in documented success rate. However, the potential for more discovers and additional reservoirs is enormous. The main conclusion of the study is that certain surface geochemical methods can discriminate surface signatures between buried productive and non-productive Leadville reservoirs. 61 pages + 6 appendices

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequence Stratigraphy, presently one of the most rapidly growing areas in geology, is concerned with the documentation and prediction of how sandstones (potential hydrocarbon reservoirs) and shales (potential source rocks) are distributed in time and space within sedimentary basins. The book takes a critical look at some of the sequence stratigraphy concepts, and provides an account of how these have been applied recently in NW Europe (North Sea, mid Norway and E. Greenland, Barents Sea and Svalbard), mainly in connection with the exploration for oil and gas. There is currently no similar book available.
