Book excerpt: The shear provisions of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials bridge design code have changed significantly in recent years. The 2004 Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and 2002 Standard shear provisions for the design of prestressed concrete bridge girders typically require more shear reinforcement than the 1979 Interim shear provisions. The purpose of this research was to determine whether or not bridge girders designed according to the 1979 interim shear provisions were underdesigned for shear and develop a method to identify potentially underdesigned girders. Two shear capacity tests were performed on opposite ends of a bridge girder removed from Mn/DOT Bridge No. 73023. The stirrup spacing in the girder suggested it was designed according to the 1979 Interim shear provisions. The results from the shear tests indicated the girder was capable of holding the required shear demand because the applied shear at failure for both tests was larger than the factored shear strength required by the 2004 LRFD HL-93 and 2002 Standard HS20-44 loading. The results of a parametric study showed that girders designed using the 1979 Interim were most likely to be underdesigned for shear near the support and that the girders most likely to be underdesigned in this region had smaller length to girder spacing ratios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design procedure to calculate the shear capacity of bridge girders that was used forty years ago is very different than those procedures that are recommended in the current AASHTO LRFD Specifications. As a result, many bridge girders that were built forty years ago do not meet current design standards, and in some cases warrant replacement due to insufficient calculated shear capacity. However despite this insufficient calculated capacity, these bridge girders have been found to function adequately in service with minimal signs of distress. The objective of this research was to investigate the actual in service capacity of prestressed concrete girders that have been in service over an extended period of time.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the shear capacity of concrete T-beams prestressed with CFRP cables (CFCC) and contributes to the scarce research available for shear behavior of FRP prestressed concrete beams. Four beams are tested under distributed load, while twelve beams are tested under four point bending. Three different a/d ratios of 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 are investigated. The results show that the shear capacity of the beams increases significantly when a/d is reduced below 2.5. The effect of FRP stirrups on the shear capacity of the beams is investigated and it is shown that the minimum required stirrups according to CSA-S6-10 are ineffective in deep beams with a/d = 1.5. The accuracy of current North American shear design formulas for FRP prestressed concrete beams subjected to four-point bending and distributed load is evaluated. The available strut and tie models are studied for determining the shear capacity of FRP prestressed deep beams.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate shear capacity of prestressed concrete beams is difficult to predict accurately, especially after being in service for an extended period of time. The Utah Department of Transportation asked researchers at Utah State University to experimentally determine the existing shear capacity of 41-year-old prestressed, decommissioned concrete bridge girders and then provide recommendations on how to increase that ultimate shear capacity. This thesis presents the research findings that relate to the existing shear capacity of the prestressed concrete girders. Eight AASHTO Type II bridge girders were tested up to failure by applying external loads near the supports to determine their ultimate shear capacities. The measured results were then compared to calculated values obtained using the AASHTO LRFD bridge design code, and the ACI 318-08 design code. Prestress losses were also measured by means of a cracking test and then compared to values calculated according to the AASHTO prestress loss equations. Both the ultimate shear capacities and the residual prestress forces were used to evaluate the girders after being in service for more than 40 years.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, a mechanical flexural shear model for beams without shear reinforcement is derived that accountsfor the shear transfer actions from direct strut action, compression zone, crack processing zone, aggregateinterlock and dowel action. Based on the mechanical model, a simplified closed form Critical CrackWidth Model is derived. By linking the flexural shear capacity with flexural crack widths, the influence of axialforces can be accounted for consistently within this model. The comparison of the model with shear tests onRC beams, PC beams and RC beams in tension shows a very good agreement and it can be concluded thatall relevant influence parameters are considered correctly.AbsatzMoreover, the shear capacity of beams with shear reinforcement was investigated. The behavior of beamswith very little shear reinforcement can be considered similar to the behavior of beams without shear reinforcement, but with an additional stirrup contribution. For higher shear reinforcement ratios, the beams behavein agreement with an equilibrium based truss model with a variable strut inclination. To distinguish thesefailure modes in a consistent manner, a criterion based on the mechanical shear reinforcement ratio ofthe beam was derived. On this basis, shear design procedures for the design of new structures as well as forthe economic assessment of existing structures are presented. The partial safety factors for the proposedmodels are determined by probabilistic evaluations according to EN 1990. This thesis thus presents a comprehensiveprocedure for design and assessment of structures under shear loading. Judging from test evaluationsit can be expected that the presented approaches will be especially beneficiary for the assessment ofexisting structures like bridges.
