Book excerpt: A single bullet pierces a muggy summer evening in Dayton, Vermont, a small town set in the majestic Green Mountains. Its intended target, Rachel Gates, is a seemingly average citizen, except for her connections to the drug lord José Tahs. The bullet is meant to silence her before she can reveal what she knows. The assassination attempt fails as Special Agent Andrew Brown stops the killers before they destroy his one lead to Tahs. Several days before Christmas, Andrew Brown calls an emergency meeting where he explains why he believes Dayton is in great danger. For Christmas, Tahs has planned the largest drug drop of the century to take place in Dayton. He's out to fulfill a vendetta and challenges his arch-nemesis to try to stop him. Andrew gladly accepts the challenge. Andrew finds himself chasing José Tahs in a world of drugs, deceit and deception as the town he's lived in the past two years becomes a town he no longer knows. Thrust into a world where people are not always what they seem, survival comes at a steep price. Welcome to Shattered Alliances, where your best friend may also be your worst enemy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A challenge to long-held assumptions about the costs and benefits of America’s allies. Since the Revolutionary War, the United States has entered into dozens of alliances with international powers to protect its assets and advance its security interests. America’s Entangling Alliances offers a corrective to long-held assumptions about US foreign policy and is relevant to current public and academic debates about the costs and benefits of America’s allies. Author Jason W. Davidson examines these alliances to shed light on their nature and what they reveal about the evolution of American power. He challenges the belief that the nation resists international alliances, showing that this has been true in practice only when using a narrow definition of alliance. While there have been more alliances since World War II than before it, US presidents and Congress have viewed it in the country’s best interest to enter into a variety of security arrangements over virtually the entire course of the country’s history. By documenting thirty-four alliances—categorized as defense pacts, military coalitions, or security partnerships—Davidson finds that the US demand for allies is best explained by looking at variance in its relative power and the threats it has faced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history, analysis, and criticism of what the author calls ?postmodern interpretations of science? (PIS) and the closely related ?sociology of scientific knowledge? (SSK). This movement traces its origin to Thomas Kuhn's revolutionary work, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962), but is more extreme. It believes that science is a ?social construction?, having little to do with nature, and is determined by contextual forces such as the race, class, gender of the scientist, laboratory politics, or the needs of the military industrial complex.Since the 1970s, PIS has become fashionable in the humanities, social sciences, and ethnic or women's studies, as well as in the new academic discipline of Science, Technology, and Society (STS). It has been attacked by numerous authors and the resulting conflicts led to the so-called Science Wars of the 1990s. While the present book is also critical of PIS, it focuses on its intellectual and political origins and tries to understand why it became influential in the 1970s. The book is both an intellectual and a political history. It examines the thoughts of Karl Popper, Karl Mannheim, Ludwik Fleck, Thomas Kuhn, Paul Feyerabend, David Bloor, Steve Woolgar, Steve Shapin, Bruno Latour, and PIS-like doctrines in mathematics. It also describes various philosophical contributions to PIS ranging from the Greek sophists to 20th century post-structuralists and argues that the disturbed political atmosphere of the Vietnam War era was critical to the rise of PIS.
