Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My lifetime encompasses the postwar subsidence in the early 1920s of the greatest influenza pandemic in history, direct encounters with FM1 virus at Fort Mon mouth in 1947, the care of influenza patients in the 1950s, the pursuit of the in fluenza virus through the modern pandemics of 1957 and 1968, and a present in which the genes of the virus have dissembled in the DNA of vaccinia virus and Escherichia coli through the wand of "high tech. " If my corpus could be fossilized for archival and archaeological purposes, it would be found to contain immune cells branded with the imprint of the "swine" influenza virus of post-1918 and brain cells no less imprinted with memories of the abortive return of its descendant during America's bicentennial. But before that unlikely event, I wanted to try to make some sense out of this baffling dis ease and its viruses-expecting no definitive revelations but hoping for a sharper definition of problems. Hence this book. It is an audacious act in these days of specialization to essay a book such as this singlehandedly, but I have done so for selfish reasons. I wanted to reexam ine old questions about the nature of influenza and its epidemics in the light of the dazzling advances in molecular biology of the past few years. No virus has been better studied, but few diseases are less well understood.

MCVIE The impact of therapy on one subset of lung cancer, the "small cell" type has been significant and lasting. The reality of cure for even a fraction of patients with this disease has caused reverberations in the pathology lab where the responsibili. '~y and challenge of diagnosis of this vital sub group lies. No less dramatic has been the discovery that the cell types of lung cancer have recognisable growth characteristics in serum free culture, they are recognisable by patterns of markers and some produce growth factors which autoregulate their eventual fate. Many of the discoveries from the biological studies have impacted on the pathologist in the form of disturbing evidence for a single stem cell origin for all the cell types of lung cancer and in the shape of new facilitation in diagnosis by appli cation of immunoperoxidase techniques. Monoclonal antibodies raised against oncogene products, growth factor receptor sites, "bystander" cell membrane proteins can all be applied to cytology specimens and frozen or paraffin fixed tissue sections to aid diagnosis and some can be used in sequential serum assay to monitor therapy and predict prognosis. Adding to these extraordinary tools, the sophistication of electron micro scopy and immuno-electrcn microscopy, new techniques for preparation of tissue and novel methods for studying vital cells in "kinesis", you sense the flavour of the future of lung cancer which is captured in this book.

This third edition, as well as updated comprehensive and practical information on all aspects of running tournaments, also contains the new FIDE (World Chess Federation) Official Laws of Chess. These Laws were revised at the Chess Olympiad in Calvia, with changes taking effect from July 2005. • Several new chapters have been added on inputting games, websites, junior chess and peripheral events. • The FIDE Title Regulations have been fully revised since the last edition, substantially due to the efforts of Stewart Reuben. What is provided here are the necessary rules, which will enable an organiser or arbiter to run a title norm event. • Various Swiss Pairing Systems are compared critically. • Information given provides what is practically a blue-print to enable an organiser to put together a tournament. Stewart Reuben is internationally recognised as one of the world's foremost chess organisers and arbiters. He is currently Chairman of the FIDE Organizers Committee; Secretary of the Rules and Tournament Regulations Committee, member of the Title and Ratings Committee and of the Qualification Commission. He is also past Chairman of the British Chess Federation. He has officiated at and/or organised numerous top-level events, including the World Championship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite acknowledgment that loss of living diversity is an international biological crisis, the ecological causes and consequences of extinction have not yet been widely addressed. In honor of Edward O. Wilson, winner of the 1993 International Prize for Biology, an international group of distinguished biologists bring ecological, evolutionary, and management perspectives to the issue of biodiversity. The roles of ecosystem processes, community structure and population dynamics are considered in this book. The goal, as Wilson writes in his introduction, is "to assemble concepts that unite the disciplines of systematics and ecology, and in so doing to create a sound scientific basis for the future management of biodiversity."

Book excerpt: "Much research has been conducted to provide researchers and hearing healthcare professionals with updated information in regard to hearing assessments, results interpretation and case management. This ongoing research is particularly imperative to guide clinicians with optimized methods in assessing and managing pediatric patients with hearing impairment and disability. As such, tremendous research efforts have been made in determining the most optimum methods in assessing hearing using both subjective and objective tests. Since hearing loss can occur due to disrupted peripheral and/or central auditory pathway, there is also a growing interest to study children with auditory processing disorder (APD). Even though notable achievements have been observed in understanding APD, more research is required, particularly in establishing a gold standard APD test and its specific interventions. Aditionally, having an objective test such as speech-evoked auditory brainstem response is beneficial to understand how speech sounds are encoded within the brainstem region in hearing-impaired children, as well as in those with compromised neural function. In this book, we have gathered research from Malaysia and India in this field and hope it will be of interest to our readers"--
