Book Synopsis Three Up on Seventeen by : Bill Murphy
Download or read book Three Up on Seventeen written by Bill Murphy and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THREE UP ON SEVENTEEN: A Collection of Chip Shots and Cheap Shots is a book by a golf junkie for golf junkies. As both a passionate player and former USGA/PGA Rules Official, Bill Murphy brings his own unique perspective of the game, cleverly connecting golf’s often difficult dots with an engaging, witty, and brilliantly clear viewpoint. The author gives a view from “inside the ropes” of South Florida’s bustling, hustling professional mini-tour and amateur circuits—including some extraordinary encounters with professional golf great Bubba Watson and a unique friendship with Julius Boros. The book includes Murphy’s often hilarious takes on some of the game’s inevitable subjects: from the Runyon-esque characters that are drawn to the game, to the gamblers, cheaters and players of every questionable ilk, and even the occasional alligator. Follow “Murph” to some of Westchester County’s most prestigious golf clubs to get a first-hand look at their infamously lush fairways and the “suits” that inhabit them. In its final pages, the golf course also becomes a bittersweet and poignant stage for author and reader alike as Murphy recalls the events of November 1963 and September 2001, his accessible narrator’s voice becoming all the more engaging, moving and indelible.

Book Synopsis The Man Who Would Not Shut Up by : Marvin Kitman
Download or read book The Man Who Would Not Shut Up written by Marvin Kitman and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fair? Balanced? To some, Bill O'Reilly is a semi-demented cable TV talk show host who can be an obnoxious, insufferable, opinionated, rude loudmouth whose views, the kinder ones say, are typical right-wing drivel. But there is much more to O'Reilly than what meets eye. O'Reilly is the paradigm of idiosyncrasy in television journalism. On the rough road to the top, O'Reilly learned how to give the public what it wants and thinks it needs. From his early education at the hands of nuns to an advanced degree in public policy from Harvard, from working at local television stations and rising through the ranks to network news, O'Reilly spent nearly twenty-five years learning his craft before he became an overnight star at Fox News. In this very intimate look at the man and what matters to him, veteran media critic Marvin Kitman explores all the experiences that led to the making of Bill O'Reilly—a nonconformist in a business that demands conformity as the price of success, and a man who has risen to the top by not playing by the rules of broadcast news. Kitman shows that O'Reilly is not a knee-jerk conservative, but an "independent" freethinker with a mind of his own, and he believes what journalism needs is more Bill O'Reillys. Not screamers, the blowhards like the current O'Reilly clones rushed on the air since his success, but trained journalists, reporting the news and telling us why, in their opinion, the world is a crazy place. Supported by twenty-nine interviews with O'Reilly, Marvin Kitman chronicles a descent from reporter of news to spewer of views.

Download or read book Time's Up written by Janey Mack and published by Kensington Cozies. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The most engaging new detective in a long time... Janey Mack’s debut novel is a stand-out.” —Hy Conrad, author of Toured to Death The police academy gave her the boot—and she knows how to use it. All her life, Maisie McGrane dreamed of following in her father and older brothers’ footsteps and joining the force. But when she’s expelled from the police academy, she’s reduced to taking a job as a meter maid. Now, instead of chasing down perps, she’s booting people’s cars and taking abuse from every lowlife who can’t scrape together enough change to feed the meter. McGranes weren’t put on this earth to quit, however. When Maisie stumbles across the body of a City Hall staffer with two bullets in his chest, her badge-wielding brothers try to warn her off the case. But with the help of her secret crush, shadowy ex-Army Ranger Hank Bannon, Maisie’s determined to follow the trail of conspiracy no matter where it leads. And that could put her in the crosshairs of a killer—and all she’s packing is a ticket gun. “Mack’s outstanding debut conjures up equal parts Janet Evanovich (zany characters) and Michael Harvey (the Chicago political machine)... Riotous characters, including the members of the large McGrane clan, enhance a fast and furious plot that expertly balances menace and laugh-out-loud hijinks.” – Publishers Weekly, STARRED Review “Mystery buffs will not only be swept up in the ingenious and well-crafted plot buy will love the irrepressible Maisie, who knows what she wants. Recommend for readers who miss the works of Eleanor Taylor Bland and enjoy those of Tim Dorsey.”-- Library Journal, STARRED Review
Book Synopsis Multifactorial Analysis in Corpus Linguistics by : Stefan Thomas Gries
Download or read book Multifactorial Analysis in Corpus Linguistics written by Stefan Thomas Gries and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-04-29 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a novel analysis of the word-order alternation of English transitive phrasal verbs (Particle Movement) from a cognitive-functional and psycholinguistic perspective. Its main objective, however, is a methodological one, namely, to demonstrate the superiority of corpus-based, multifactorial and probabilistic approaches to grammatical phenomena over traditional analyses based on acceptability judgements and minimal pair tests. The advantages resulting from the advocated multifactorial approach to Particle Movement are: Particle Movement can be described at a previously unknown level of detail; all determinants ever proposed to govern the alternation can be integrated into a single hypothesis explaining the alternation; constructions can be compared to each other with respect to their degree of prototypicality and similarity; it is possible to actually predict with a high degree of accuracy which of the two word orders native speakers will subconsciously choose in the natural production of speech and text (thereby passing the most rigorous test conceivable); finally, competing hypotheses can be compared in terms of their predictive power. Apart from these methodological points, the study also addresses the more theoretical and linguistic question of how to explain such results. It is argued that theories of language production that rest on the notion of processing effort are, contrary to some contemporary analysts, not ideally suited to explain such phenomena and that interactive activation models of language production allow for a more elegant interpretation and implementation of the results.
