Book excerpt: Shark’s Breath is the 5th book in the Murder by the Sea series by Carol Ann Ross. It was supposed to be a vacation. It was supposed to be a time when they could all get away, relax, and enjoy the company of friends and the coolness of the season. But, damn, if E.J. didn’t bring along her juju and there was no telling where things would go now. But that was part of the intrigue and gratification of Don’s job. It was all about solving and playing a game of cops and robbers, like when he was a kid. But now it was for real, with real guns, real killers. The job was kind of like women too. When he figured them out, he was done, and all that was left was doling out justice. Set on Topsail Island, Shark's Breath takes you on a journey into the cool fall waters north of Topsail when the area festivals are in full swing. Stroll along the sandy lanes lined with jewelry makers, wood workers, and glass blowers, peruse artisans of every ilk, and breathe in the salty air. Smell the blood in the water?

Book excerpt: The acclaimed marine biologist and author of The Brilliant Abyss examines the existential threats the world’s ocean will face in the coming decades and offers cautious optimism for much of the abundant life within in No matter where we live, “we are all ocean people,” Helen Scales emphatically observes in her bracing yet hopeful exploration of the future of the ocean. Beginning with its fascinating deep history, Scales links past to present to show how the prehistoric ocean ecology was already working in ways similar to the ocean of today. In elegant, evocative prose, she takes readers into the realms of animals that epitomize today’s increasingly challenging conditions. Ocean life everywhere is on the move as seas warm, and warm waters are an existential threat to emperor penguins, whose mating grounds in Antarctica are collapsing. Shark populations—critical to balanced ecosystems—have shrunk by 71 per cent since the 1970s, largely the result of massive and oft-unregulated industrial fishing. Orcas—the apex predators—have also drastically declined, victims of toxic chemicals and plastics with long half-lives that disrupt the immune system and the ability to breed. Yet despite these threats, many hopeful signs remain. Increasing numbers of no-fish zones around the world are restoring once-diminishing populations. Amazing seagrass meadows and giant kelp forests rivaling those on land are being regenerated and expanded. They may be our best defense against the storm surges caused by global warming, while efforts to reengineer coral reefs for a warmer world are growing. Offering innovative ideas for protecting coastlines and cleaning the toxic seas, Scales insists we need more ethical and sustainable fisheries and must prevent the other existential threat of deep-sea mining, which could significantly alter life on earth. Inspiring us all to maintain a sense of awe and wonder at the majesty beneath the waves, she urges us to fight for the better future that still exists for the Anthropocene ocean.

Book excerpt: They are ancient. They are waiting. They are patient and prepared to battle for souls Captain Raoul Rivera wrestled with the helm. His heart was turning to stone at the hopeless situation before him. The hurricane storm clouds rose in front of his ship like a huge impenetrable wall. He was choosing to take his ship into certain danger. He searched the deck below, his eyes making a quick scan for Miss Patterson. He quickly spotted her among the crew and rigging; everyone was making ready for the storm. She was smiling up at him as if she had been waiting for him to notice her. His heart swelled, and he knew that he would fight the devil himself to protect her. At that moment the hair on his neck stood on end. He looked over his shoulder. There on the western horizon crested what he dreaded most: the black sails of the Pirate Demon. Titus Ordonez, that dirty-evil pirate had found them. Would his luck and wit be enough to save his ship, crew and Brenda? Lord, help me. His whispered prayer was blown away on the wind.

In turn, you have shared your own wonderful, personal home remedies you have found to be the most useful in relieving common maladies of everyday life. One common thread runs through each of those letters – your belief that the age-old remedies and recipes of yesterday can lead to a stronger, healthier life. It is because of your interest in preserving youth the natural way that I bring you this book, FIGHTING ARTHRITIS NATURALLY. Over many years (and across many miles of travel) I have collected these practical living hints and folk remedies from around the world. I have shared some of these with you in the dozen or so other books I have written. In my quest to understand how folk medicine has been used to treat the common maladies that plague us all, I have visited hospitals, clinics and universities around the globe. My travels have allowed me to gather age old wisdom and traditional remedies for promoting better health from kind and sharing people in East Africa, Asia, South America, the South Pacific and the Middle East – as well as across the United States. Many of the bits of folklore and country wisdom associated with arthritis are from oral history; others are from out-of-print, hard-to-find books, monographs, pamphlets and correspondence with healthcare providers (such as two doctors in Belize who make therapeutic vinegar from bananas). Countries I have visited include Bolivia, China, Columbia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Belgium, Uganda, Kenya, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Tanzania and The Netherlands. I have a very personal interest in old-time remedies. Practical, hands-on experience has shown me that they can be at least as helpful as many of conventional medicine’s prescriptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once feared and revered, sharks have captivated people since our earliest human encounters. Children and adults alike stand awed before aquarium shark tanks, fascinated by the giant teeth and unnerving eyes. And no swim in the ocean is undertaken without a slight shiver of anxiety about the very real—and very cinematic—dangers of shark bites. But our interactions with sharks are not entirely one-sided: the threats we pose to sharks through fisheries, organized hunts, and gill nets on coastlines are more deadly and far-reaching than any bite. In Sharks and People acclaimed wildlife photographer Thomas Peschak presents stunning photographs that capture the relationship between people and sharks around the globe. A contributing photographer to National Geographic, Peschak is best known for his unusual photographs of sharks—his iconic image of a great white shark following a researcher in a small yellow kayak is one of the most recognizable shark photographs in the world. The other images gathered here are no less riveting, bringing us as close as possible to sharks in the wild. Alongside the photographs, Sharks and People tells the compelling story of the natural history of sharks. Sharks have roamed the oceans for more than four hundred million years, and in this time they have never stopped adapting to the ever-changing world—their unique cartilage skeletons and array of super-senses mark them as one of the most evolved groups of animals. Scientists have recently discovered that sharks play an important role in balancing the ocean, including maintaining the health of coral reefs. Yet, tens of millions of sharks are killed every year just to fill the demand for shark fin soup alone. Today more than sixty species of sharks, including hammerhead, mako, and oceanic white-tip sharks, are listed as vulnerable or in danger of extinction. The need to understand the significant part sharks play in the oceanic ecosystem has never been so urgent, and Peschak’s photographs bear witness to the thrilling strength and unique attraction of sharks. They are certain to enthrall and inspire.
