Book excerpt: “The sharks, ancient or modern, real or imaginary, have always been with us, and will probably remain with us forever. They appear not only in movies and literature, but in countless permutations of size, shape, and materials, permeating our daily lives with their silent menace. In a sense, humans live in a world replete with sharks, not vice-versa.” Thus Richard Ellis sets about chronicling and debunking the myths of sharks throughout history. From 18th century art to the phenomena of JAWS, “the shark” has remained the indomitable aggressor of the deep, the last demon of humankind. The image of the shark and the fear it inspires infiltrates our daily lives with its mythical power and strength. But it is not man who should fear the shark. Our need to dominate these predators is destroying them and their habitat. Through hundreds of full-color images Ellis proves the necessity of preserving these majestic creatures. As curator of the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art’s exhibition entitled “Shark”, debuting May 2012, Ellis adeptly turns these sleek, efficient hunters from monsters of the deep into rare, beautiful forces of nature.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade, the study of shark biology has benefited from the development, refinement, and rapid expansion of novel techniques and advances in technology. These have given new insight into the fields of shark genetics, feeding, foraging, bioenergetics, imaging, age and growth, movement, migration, habitat preference, and habitat use. This pioneering book, written by experts in shark biology, examines technologies such as autonomous vehicle tracking, underwater video approaches, molecular genetics techniques, and accelerometry, among many others. Each detailed chapter offers new insights and promises for future studies of elasmobranch biology, provides an overview of appropriate uses of each technique, and can be readily extended to other aquatic fish and marine mammals and reptiles. Including chapter authors who were pioneers in developing some of the technologies discussed in the book, this book serves as the first single-source reference with in-depth coverage of techniques appropriate for the laboratory and field study of sharks, skates, and rays. It concludes with a unique section on Citizen Science and its application to studies of shark biology. This is a must-read for any marine biologist or scientist working in the field of shark biology, as well as marine biology students and graduates.

Book excerpt: From a no frills family to national business success. It has not been a straight road for me, but with my work ethic, tenacity, never-quit attitude and entrepreneurial skills I have thrived and survived. Starting out at 12 years old going door to door selling Downy Flake Doughnuts, my work ethic was established at an early age. I advanced moving from job to job accelerating my work position providing me with enough income to purchase a wrist watch, my first car and paying my way through college. Investing and my entrepreneurial instincts have catapulted me from having my first duplex, purchasing a printing business, opening three roller skating rinks, building a national condominium and apartment development company building and selling over 1,400 units. Along the way I think I have used most of my Nine Lives! Among my many close calls with death are my tour in Vietnam, surviving Hurricane Iris and a runaway driver. I served with the 1st Air Calvary Division in Vietnam with my team’s mission, “Search and Destroy”. At times we had direct contact with the enemy at daybreak, mid-day, and prior to sunset-breakfast, lunch and dinner. I excelled at this S & D mission being named “Soldier of the Month” and being awarded an accommodation for Valor. On one of our many international SCUBA diving adventures my wife and I were on a 100-foot yacht, The Aggressor, in Belize along with another 100-foot yacht, The Wave Dancer. We were tied up 20 feet apart in a remote area waiting out Hurricane Iris, when the category four storm ripped The Wave Dancer from its cleats capsizing and killing 20 of the 28 people aboard. I wrote a book about the tragedy, “No Safe Harbor”. Another close call with death came as I was sitting in my front room watching a baseball game. A person speeding from the police catapulted his car over a berm into a tree and spun his car into my room. Both the tree and car were less than 12 inches from where I was sitting. The fleeing crashing culprit was arrested a few weeks later on my 80th birthday I have lived a charmed and successful Life!

Book excerpt: Powerful. Formidable. Sinister. The World War II fleet submarine was a near perfect blend of design, form, and function. This is the story of the USS Pampanito (SS-383): enemy attacks, crash-dives, depth charges, missed targets, kills -- and a daring rescue. Part of a U.S. Navy wolf pack that sank a Japanese convoy, she returned later and discovered thousands of Allied prisoners of war abandoned by their captors to die. At great risk, Pampanito's crew rescued as many POWs as they could.Today, part of San Francisco's museum fleet, she is a portal to World War II's Silent Service. Pampanito earned six battle stars.
