Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Can't Remember is an intimate photo essay of four families and their process of coping with Alzheimer's disease -- a process of coming to terms with the practical and emotional consequences of a disease that changes the entire family dynamic. Family members tell their stories of first denying that their loved one cold be suffering from Alzheimer's, then dealing with the changing relationships among family members and the intensifying emotions, as old family troubles are stirred up and new feelings of despair and love appear. Photographs and personal narratives are woven together to show both the unpleasant and the beautiful sides of the struggle for connection between spouses and across generations. Smoller has a gift for capturing people as they interact, whether it's arguing around the kitchen table or dancing cheek to cheek. Each family's story is different, but all four families share common pain and frustration. A highway patrolman who has early onset Alzheimer's describes what it is like to have Alzheimer's. His wife tells a parallel story of life together after hearing the diagnosis. A daughter gives the following account of her mother: "I though that it would be helpful if mother spent time in my home in Colorado. Before this visit, I was in denial, convinced that she suffered from depression and not Alzheimer's disease. ... On the plane trip to Colorado, I was brought into the stark, cold reality that Mom had Alzheimer's. She did not know where she was or where she was going. Upon arrival, she did not recognize my home, although she had visited me numerous times in the past. She tried sleeping in the bathtub the first night." Another daughter relates that she was unaware of the onset of Alzheimer's in her mother, because her mother was such a "wonderful actress." Eventually the memory problems were no longer confined to where things belonged in the kitchen, but extended into driving off at random, driving in circles in a parking lot in the middle of the night or as much as 75 miles away from home. I Can't Remember gives an intimate glimpse into the hearts and minds of caregivers and patients. Supportive social networks are essential for healthy life. This book provides the impetus caregivers need to develop contacts that can provide support. Smoller offers a glimpse of the frustration and losses faced by those who deal with Alzheimer's, as well as the potential to transcend those losses -- even is only for a time -- through love and hope.

Book excerpt: It is painfully difficult to watch a loved one decline as dementia ravages their mind, destroying memories, rational thinking, and judgment. In her touching memoir, I Will Never Forget, Elaine Pereira shares the heartbreaking and humorous story of her mother’s incredible journey through dementia. Pereira begins with entertaining glimpses into her own childhood and feisty teenage years, demonstrating her mother’s strength of character. Years later, as Betty Ward started to exhibit bizarre behaviors and paranoia, Pereira was mystified by her mom’s amazing ability to mask the truth. Not until a revealing incident over an innocuous drapery rod did Pereira recognize the extent of her mother’s Alzheimer’s. As their roles shifted and a new paradigm emerged, Pereira transformed into a caregiver blindly navigating dementia’s unpredictable haze. But before Betty’s passing, she orchestrated a stunning rally to control her own destiny via a masterful, Houdini-like escape. I Will Never Forget is a powerful heartwarming story that helps others know that they are not alone in their journey. “Poignant, shocking, and honest … far more than just words on paper. If you or someone you know is living through the hell of dementia, you need this book!” —Ionia Martin, developer of Readful Things Reviews and Alzheimer’s caregiver

Book excerpt: "Imagine the heart-wrenching devastation that is experienced by a family when a parent is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease! Author Diane Currie shares her candid and personal reflections about her mother's struggle with this disease as she copes with the reality of the present but always honors the memory of her past. Through a series of moving vignettes, she remains connected with her mother in a creative way as the strong bond between them slowly dissolves as the disease progresses. From the first moment of her mother's diagnosis, Currie conveys in a captivating manner the intense feelings of loss and hopelessness one experiences when dealing with this dreadful disease. She is able to protray the subtle changes in her mother's behavior and personality throughout her decline, all in a deeply human way. While Before My Eyes describes one family's touching and painful journey, in essence Currie's reflective account may typify the Alzheimer's experience, while offering support and validation to all those who walk its arduous path"--Page 4 of cover.

With the passion of a committed daughter and the fervor of a tireless reporter, Martha Stettinius weaves this compelling story of caregiving for her demented mother with a broad exploration of the causes of Alzheimer's disease, means of treating it, and hopes for preventing it. She shares the lessons she's learned over seven years of caregiving at home, in assisted living, a rehabilitation center, a "memory care" facility for people living with dementia, and a nursing home--lessons not just about how to navigate the system, but how caregiving helped the author to grow closer to her mother, and to learn to nurture her mother's spirit through the most advanced stages of dementia.

Book excerpt: Author Cynthia Ryan offers a heartfelt glimpse into the experience of losing a parent to Alzheimer's disease. She shares the realities and heartbreak of her mother's experience, one that was both enhanced and complicated by their complex mother-daughter relationship and family dynamics. Shy and distant, but also independent, her mother didn't often find joy in the roles of wife and mother. The trials of a scarred childhood, marked by poverty and an alcoholic father, made true happiness elusive for her mother. On Christmas Eve of 2000, Cynthia started to see noticeable changes in her mother. A devoted grandmother, she had never forgotten to buy presents for one of her grandchildren-until that day. What's more, she spent the day pouting, because the family was celebrating Christmas one day early. Over the coming months, her behavior grew increasingly erratic and forgetful; she became agitated more and more easily. Cynthia finally took her mother to the doctor, where everyone's worst fears were confirmed: Alzheimer's. In this memoir, Cynthia shares their journey of understanding, forgiveness, blessings, healing, and renewed love. She celebrates her mother's life, even as it spiraled out of her control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, “WALKING TOGETHER, A Mother and Daughter's Journey Through Aging and Alzheimer's” is a memoir of the last eight years of life that the author and mother shared together. The author wrote the book not only to tell the story, but to also reach out and share what they both learned along the way. Her mother lived with her family for eleven years and began developing dementia that slowly grew into Alzheimer's over this time. Eventually her mother needed nursing home care. The author spent over twenty-five years as a teacher of communication skills and psychological consultant to Hospices in the Chicago area and offered her services as an end of life counselor and grief counselor. She was a psychotherapist for the same period of time. She had developed many skills that helped her be with her mother in a positive way, but there were many things to learn that she did not know about in walking through the many years together in the stages often called, “the big forgetting.” Her book details the stages that she, her husband and her mother took together as they walked through the months, weeks, and days of eight years of “forgetting.” The author and her mother had a close and friendship based relationship, and had shared over many years conversations about books, friends, politics and family. There was no loss as great as the ones that came about when her mother could no longer see to read, could not remember the grandchildren's names, and could no longer share a cup of tea with her daughter and simply talk the good talk of women everywhere.Because of these losses, the author, Elizabeth Pannier, began to keep a journal documenting conversations, experiences, laughter, poetry, sadness, and finally, the shared silences. Because of the way in which their last years together evolved, this memoir is written in the form of letters addressed to her mother. Each chapter begins Dear Mother, and then continues as it revolves around a particular theme. The book is drawn on these journal entries and shared experiences and reads well. Some of the themes are: Forgetting, Losing Oneself, Nursing Homes, Leaning to Listen, Reflections, Falling Shadows, and Letting Go. The book is short and yet helpful and supportive to the reader.Responses to this book have been positive and supportive. It is helpful for people beginning to walk their own journey with a loved one at this stage of life. It is profoundly helpful for those people who are grieving the loss of a loved one from this dementia path, and it is a great help for those who are aging and desire to share a talk about the possibility of Dementia and Alzheimer's and what they would like their children to know about their wishes. This is not a “how-to” book. It is a poignant, truthful accounting of one mother, and one family who loved her and cared for her throughout her final days and learned that each day is special. In the end, both her mother and the author moved through the final years in a positive way, and that is one of the facts of living that they learned over and over again. It continues to be the author's desire that this story of “WalkingTogether,” will be of help to others who find themselves in the beginning, middle or ending stages of walking with a beloved through this final journey, assisting them with the process of acceptance and letting go of any fear. Each moment is life and an opportunity for love, and it is one way to walk together through the great forgetting.

Book excerpt: During the years of progressive struggle and decline, Wanda kept journals of her experience as a means of coping with the frustration and heartache. These documents served as the raw material for Parallel Journeys, a memoir that is not only about Alzheimer’s and its victims, but the experiences of the family, as well, who must watch and care for a loved one as they fade away. From the first symptoms to the inevitable end, Wanda offers her story in a series of personal vignettes, bravely revealing how Alzheimer’s devastates the individuals it touches. To those readers who have endured the disease in their family, these moments will be all-too-familiar. However, in sharing her private experiences and deepest feelings, Wanda shows us how it is possible to go through the darkness and survive. Mixed in with the pain and sadness are glimmering gems of insight that teach us how to cope and maintain faith in the midst of suffering and doubt. There are stories with Wanda and her mother that will make you laugh, as well as those that will make you cry; joy and suffering are both parts of life, as Wanda beautifully and painfully explores. Tender, emotional, and courageous, Parallel Journeys serves an invaluable resource for anyone connected to the tragedies of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Book excerpt: Mary Ellen Geist decided to leave her job as a CBS Radio anchor to return home to Michigan when her father's Alzheimer's got to be too much for her mother to shoulder alone. She chose to live her life by a different set of priorities: to be guided by her heart, not by outside accomplishment and recognition. The New York Times wrote a front page story on Mary Ellen on Thanksgiving 2005. It was one of the most e-mailed stories for the month. Through her own story and through interviews with doctors and other women who've followed the "Daughter Track"--leaving a job to care for an aging parent--Geist offers emotional insights on how to encourage interaction with the loved one you're caring for; how to determine daily tasks that are achievable and rewarding; how the personality of the patient affects the caregiving and the progression of the diseases; as well as invaluable advice about how caregivers can take care of themselves while accomplishing the Herculean task of constantly caring for others. Geist's years in journalism allow her to report on Boomers' caretaking dilemmas with professional objectivity, and her warm voice brings compassion and insight to one of the most difficult stituations a son or daughter may face during his or her life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marian Tally Simmons Brown served as her mother’s caretaker for ten years as she suffered through Alzheimer’s disease. In Alzheimer’s Caregiver—a Daughter’s Story, Brown offers a true-to-life account of the family’s struggle to accept an Alzheimer's diagnosis for their wife, mother, and grandmother, and it tells of their determination to keep her in the family home for all her natural days. During this time, Brown undergoes a monumental spiritual and psychological metamorphosis. While her mother’s change is decline of all bodily systems, hers is development of skills to help her function more effectively in her new role and ultimately move closer to fulfilling her ordained life plan. Help comes through CNAs, sitters, even strangers who unexpectedly show up in parking lots and on her job with an encouraging word and in restaurants offering extra pairs of hands to help with her parents. In this memoir, Brown tells how her caregiving role taught her many lessons. Toward the end of her tenth year, she reasoned the greatest accomplishment of motherhood is being in the midst of the family circle; it was from there her mother continued to teach her despite the loss of parts of herself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking multicultural anthology shares moving personal stories about the impacts of Alzheimer’s and dementia. An estimated 5.7 million Americans are afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease, including 10 percent of those over sixty-five, and it is the sixth leading cause of death. But its effects are more pervasive: for the nearly 6 million sufferers, there are more than 16 million family caregivers and many more family members. Alzheimer’s wreaks havoc not only on brain cells; it is a disease of the spirit and heart for those who suffer from it but also for their families. This groundbreaking anthology presents forty narratives, both nonfiction and fiction, that together capture the impact and complexity of Alzheimer’s and other dementias on patients as well as their caregivers and family. Deeply personal, recounting the wrenching course of a disease that kills a loved one twice—first they forget who they are, and then the body succumbs—these stories also show how witnessing the disease and caring for someone with it can be powerfully transformative, calling forth amazing strength and grace. The contributors, who have all generously donated their work, include Edwidge Danticat, Julie Otsuka, Elizabeth Nunez, Meryl Comer, Greg O’Brien, Dr. Daniel Potts, Sallie Tisdale, and Nihal Satyadev. Reflecting the diversity and global nature of the dementia crisis, this anthology is published in collaboration with UsAgainstAlzheimer’s.
