The 3 Revolutions are coming, and they will change existing travel behavior such as long-distance trips and create new questions such as who will drive for shared mobility and who will buy automated vehicles. Long distance travel, drivers for on-demand ride services, and the adoption of automated vehicles have been of recent interest to researchers, stakeholders, and policy makers but have just begun to be studied. Long-distance travel research is limited due to the lack of robust data and the complexity of defining a long-distance trip. The patterns of infrequent long-distance trips are poorly understood especially compared to the better studied (and understood) local daily travel patterns. This study contributes to filling that gap by investigating the factors that affect the frequency of long-distance trips of Californian millennials and members of the preceding Generation X. The data used was collected with an online survey administered in fall 2015 to study the mobility of these age groups. The survey collected information on several travel-related variables, including the number of long-distance trips (defined as trips longer than 100 miles, one way) made by various modes during the previous 12 months. Six negative binomial regression models of long-distance travel separated by purpose (business or leisure) and mode (overall travel versus air) are estimated. The study explores the relationship of long-distance trip formation with several sociodemographic, land use and attitudinal variables. Consistent with expectations, individual income positively affects the number of long-distance trips made by each individual. Among the attitudinal variables, the individuals who are adventurers, have higher “variety seeking” attitudes and are more interested in adopting new technologies are found to make a larger number of long-distance trips. On the other hand, those who prefer to shop in brick-and-mortar stores rather than online are found to have lower levels of long-distance travel. Lyft and Uber are two on-demand ride-service providers in the current landscape of shared mobility. In this chapter, focus is shifted from on-demand ride-sharing passengers to the drivers – a topic to which little attention has been paid but may have a significant impact on car ownership and the derived environmental and social benefits of shared mobility. For this study, data provided by Kelley Blue Book from its nationwide survey of U.S. residents ages 18 to 64 that collected information on shared mobility awareness and usage, vehicle ownership, aspirations for future vehicle ownership, and attitudes on shared mobility and vehicle ownership is used. An ordinal logit model is estimated to understand the willingness to drive for an on-demand ride-service. The individuals who report higher VMT and have more children are more willing to become drivers. Furthermore, the introduction of attitudinal factors leads to finding that those who have positive attitudes towards ride-sharing are more interested in driving. Those who enjoy driving are also more likely to be interested in driving for an on-demand ride-service. Research on vehicle automation is one of the most current topics in transportation. Some of the questions plaguing the research community include design, cost, and adoption. Many of these questions will remain unanswered until automated vehicles are available to the consumer. In this study, a sample of California new electric vehicle buyers to understand if and how current adopters of new vehicle technologies will adopt automated vehicles is used. Many respondents are interested in purchasing an automated vehicle but indicate that they only have average knowledge of the technology. Using an ordinal logit model, the interest in purchasing a fully-automated vehicle is studied and find that younger men who purchase higher cost vehicles are more interested in purchasing a fully-automated vehicle. Above all else, those who perceive automated vehicles as being safer than non-automated vehicles have an interest in purchasing an automated vehicle.

They also present new opportunities for Canadian industry, including in software development, motor vehicle and parts manufacturing, shared mobility services, infotainment, and infrastructure, as well as in data management, analytics, and security. Prototypes of low-speed autonomous shuttles and taxis are already being tested and are likely to appear on urban roads in the coming decades. There are autonomous delivery vehicles on the road today, and virtually every new vehicle currently being produced has some level of advanced driving assistance system and connectivity. These technologies will continue to evolve, connecting more vehicles to each other, to infrastructure, and to other users on the road. While their appearance in Canada may seem inevitable, the timing of their arrival and widespread adoption and acceptance remains uncertain, as does the likelihood that their benefits will be fully realized. Autonomous vehicles also raise important privacy and security concerns, could potentially worsen air quality and traffic congestion, and increase transportation inequities. Avoiding undesirable outcomes and achieving the benefits of CASE vehicles in Canada will require meeting significant technical and societal challenges and will depend on how industry, consumers, and governments respond to problems and opportunities today. Present-day planning and policy decisions related to public transit, ride sharing, and active transportation will affect how, when, and where CASE vehicles are used in Canada in the next 10, 20, and 50 years.

Since the first completion of Google's self-driving car on-road test in 2009, a variety of automobile manufacturers, high-tech companies, and transportation network companies have joined the autonomous vehicle competition in order to have a leading role in the future transportation industry. Given their self-driving capabilities, AVs are expected to further promote the current shared mobility programs, including both car-sharing and ride-hailing services. Shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) appear to be a promising future travel mode. This dissertation envisions an AV-supported shared mobility system in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama region. Tuscaloosa is a college town (UA) with a large group of young and high-educated individuals who could be among the first SAV user groups. This dissertation investigates the public perceptions towards shared mobility services powered by AVs. Twitter data were used to capture the perceptions among the general public and a student-centered survey was conducted among UA students to understand how this demographic perceives SAVs. Next, this dissertation exploits open-source social-economic data to construct high-resolution daily travel patterns to simulate a fleet of SAVs serving Tuscaloosa residents. An agent-based activity-based simulation was developed to envision the operations of an SAV system serving travelers in Tuscaloosa. This dissertation makes significant contributions in three aspects. First, the dissertation presents general impressions from social media alongside college students' specific perceptions toward AV-supported shared mobility services, revealing public beliefs and concerns about SAV concepts and the characteristics of potential SAV users in future implementation. Second, this dissertation provides one of the first studies into development of data-intensive high-resolution travel behavior and mobility service simulations for small cities where data are often limited. A framework for preparing data for such simulations is presented in this dissertation. Third, the findings show the potential operational characteristics (e.g., demand) and consequences (e.g., empty vehicle miles) of implementing a college town SAV system. Decision-makers may utilize these findings to determine the feasibility of introducing SAVs in their cities, and operators or investors can gain insights regarding the operations of SAVs (e.g., fare rates, fleet size) in a region.

Book excerpt: This thesis looks at the effects of new mobility services on emissions, via travel behavior and vehicle design improvements. Using NHTS data we find that right sizing allowed by shared mobility services would significantly affect CAFE compliance because most fuel standards would be met by moving people into more fuel efficient vehicles and thus increasing the number of these sold by companies. We then found that right sizing has the ability to reduce fuel consumption by more than 40% depending on the car replacement scenario. These reductions can make additional improvements by incorporating bikeshare within the shared mobility service. To further understand the possible effects of bikeshare, we then focus our research in the Chicago area, where we find that bikeshare has a net positive impact on transit ridership, and that this effect increases as more time passes. We then looked at Portland’s Biketown to understand the effect of transit on bikeshare, but results were inconclusive. Overall we find that mobility services will likely reduce fuel use, and increasing bikeshare use can be used to grow this reduction, while also increasing the use of transit.
