In a world where everybody is a shape and every shape has a specific job, Sam is a square who longs for softer corners, rounder edges, and the ability to roll like a circle. But everyone knows that squares don’t roll, they stack. At least that’s what everyone thinks until the day Sam takes a tumble and discovers something wonderful. He doesn’t have to be what others want or expect him to be. With playful imagery, this story considers identity and nonconformity through the eyes of Sam, a square struggling to find his true place in the world.
Book Synopsis Our Babies, Ourselves by : Meredith Small
Download or read book Our Babies, Ourselves written by Meredith Small and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-09-07 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking combination of practical parenting information and scientific analysis, Our Babies, Ourselves is the first book to explore why we raise our children the way we do--and to suggest that we reconsider our culture's traditional views on parenting. New parents are faced with innumerable decisions to make regarding the best way to care for their baby, and, naturally, they often turn for guidance to friends and family members who have already raised children. But as scientists are discovering, much of the trusted advice that has been passed down through generations needs to be carefully reexamined. In this ground-breaking book, anthropologist Meredith Small reveals her remarkable findings in the new science of ethnopediatrics. Professor Small joins pediatricians, child-development researchers, and anthropologists across the country who are studying to what extent the way we parent our infants is based on biological needs and to what extent it is based on culture--and how sometimes what is culturally dictated may not be what's best for babies. Should an infant be encouraged to sleep alone? Is breast-feeding better than bottle-feeding, or is that just a myth of the nineties? How much time should pass before a mother picks up her crying infant? And how important is it really to a baby's development to talk and sing to him or her? These are but a few of the important questions Small addresses, and the answers not only are surprising, but may even change the way we raise our children.
Download or read book Emotional written by Leonard Mlodinow and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve all been told that thinking rationally is the key to success. But at the cutting edge of science, researchers are discovering that feeling is every bit as important as thinking. You make hundreds of decisions every day, from what to eat for breakfast to how you should invest, and not one of those decisions would be possible without emotion. It has long been said that thinking and feeling are separate and opposing forces in our behavior. But as Leonard Mlodinow, the best-selling author of Subliminal, tells us, extraordinary advances in psychology and neuroscience have proven that emotions are as critical to our well-being as thinking. How can you connect better with others? How can you make sense of your frustration, fear, and anxiety? What can you do to live a happier life? The answers lie in understanding your emotions. Journeying from the labs of pioneering scientists to real-world scenarios that have flirted with disaster, Mlodinow shows us how our emotions can help, why they sometimes hurt, and what we can learn in both instances. Using deep insights into our evolution and biology, Mlodinow gives us the tools to understand our emotions better and to maximize their benefits. Told with his characteristic clarity and fascinating stories, Emotional explores the new science of feelings and offers us an essential guide to making the most of one of nature’s greatest gifts.

Download or read book The Self Illusion written by Bruce Hood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us believe that we are unique and coherent individuals, but are we? The idea of a "self" has existed ever since humans began to live in groups and become sociable. Those who embrace the self as an individual in the West, or a member of the group in the East, feel fulfilled and purposeful. This experience seems incredibly real but a wealth of recent scientific evidence reveals that this notion of the independent, coherent self is an illusion - it is not what it seems. Reality as we perceive it is not something that objectively exists, but something that our brains construct from moment to moment, interpreting, summarizing, and substituting information along the way. Like a science fiction movie, we are living in a matrix that is our mind. In The Self Illusion, Dr. Bruce Hood reveals how the self emerges during childhood and how the architecture of the developing brain enables us to become social animals dependent on each other. He explains that self is the product of our relationships and interactions with others, and it exists only in our brains. The author argues, however, that though the self is an illusion, it is one that humans cannot live without. But things are changing as our technology develops and shapes society. The social bonds and relationships that used to take time and effort to form are now undergoing a revolution as we start to put our self online. Social networking activities such as blogging, Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter threaten to change the way we behave. Social networking is fast becoming socialization on steroids. The speed and ease at which we can form alliances and relationships is outstripping the same selection processes that shaped our self prior to the internet era. This book ventures into unchartered territory to explain how the idea of the self will never be the same again in the online social world.
Book Synopsis Shape Your Personality: Spread Your Fragrance by : CD Semwal
Download or read book Shape Your Personality: Spread Your Fragrance written by CD Semwal and published by Diamond Pocket Books Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rig-Veda mantra (10.190.1) mentions the ocean of cosmic energy as the fourth step in the sequence of creation of the universe. The name given to it in the mantra is 'Samudro Arnava' meaning the wavy ocean, which name is quite appropriate, since the ocean transmits all kinds of electro-magnetic waves. The Veda describes cosmic energy in different contexts by different epithets in view of the various qualities it possesses. In the context of the sustenance of the universe, which is a fatherly act accomplished by it, the epithet given to this all-pervading medium is 'Brahma tattva' meaning the extensive element, while in the context of the birth of eight elementary particles from this basic space-energy, which is a motherly act, the epithet given to it is Aditi', which is a feminine word meaning limitless and indivisible. The names of the elementary particles born from the ocean of cosmic energy in its entire infinite expanse with their corresponding scientific names are: Mitra (electron), Varun (Proton), Aryama (Neutron), Bhag meson), Daksh(π meson), Ansh( meson), Tuvijat (neutrino) and Martand (Photon) Since all the matter of the visible universe has been created with elementary particles, it is all basically nothing but cosmic energy or Aditi, the mother of all material creation. This important truth has been beautifully expressed in the following mantra of the Yajur-Veda. The starry sky is Aditi, the mid-region is Aditi, the mother earth, the father sun, and their child the moon are Aditi. All Gods i.e. natural forces are due to Aditi. The five born (elementary particles or Fermions) are Aditi, whatever has been born is, and shall be born, would be basically Aditi or cosmic energy. And all the material universe remains and shall ever remain immersed in the 'Arnava Samudra' i.e. the infinite wavy ocean of Cosmic Energy.
Download or read book The Archetype Diet written by Dana James and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover your unique female archetype to combat emotional eating, lose weight, and become your happiest, healthiest you. In working with thousands of women who wanted to lose weight and change the shape of their bodies, leading nutritionist and functional medicine practitioner Dana James observed a striking trend: no matter how diligent they were in sticking to their diet and exercise plans, old behavioral patterns and self-doubt sabotaged their efforts. In The Archetype Diet, James helps readers escape the seemingly endless psychological tug-of-war that is hampering their ability to care for themselves and explains which hormones cause you to store body fat on your belly, thighs and hips, and what to eat to change it. A revolutionary, holistic approach to weight loss, this book guides in readers in discovering which of four archetypes they embody: · The Nurturer is always there to care for others. She is kind and compassionate, but this can come at the expense of her own self-care. · The Wonder Woman bases her self-worth on her accomplishments. She is ambitious and driven, but her work often takes precendent over her diet. · The Femme Fatale is sensual, strong, and alluring but can become obsessed with her looks to the point that she develops an unhealthy relationship with food. · The Ethereal is spiritual and intuitive, but highly sensitive to her environment so she tends to eat to numb her reactions to the world. By becoming attuned to your archetype, James shows how you can alter your diet to help feed your unique body chemistry while simultaneously examining how your sense of self-worth shapes your behaviors—including what you eat—in ways that may be working against your goals. Offering recipes, a ten-day meal plan, and a step-by-step psychological intervention, The Archetype Diet will put you on the path to becoming leaner, stronger, and more attuned to your feminine fire and energy.
