To keep the discourse grounded in practice we have refrained from going too deep into any one topic. We believe this will equip the student with the knowledge necessary to explore more advanced topics on their own. In essence, we will teach you the skills of the trade, but mastery is the journey you will have to undertake on your own. An operating system (OS) is layer of software that sits on top of the hardware. It manages the hardware resources so that the applications have the illusion that they own the hardware all to themselves. A real-time system is one that not only gets the correct answer but gets the correct answer at the correct time. Design and development of an OS therefore requires both, understanding the underlying architecture in terms of the interface (instruction set architecture, ISA) it provides to the software, and organizing the software to exploit this interface and present it to user applications. The decisions made in effectively managing the underlying architecture becomes more crucial in real-time systems as the performance (specifically timing) demands go beyond simple logical correctness. The architecture we will focus on is the ARM ISA, which is a very popular architecture in the embedded device ecosystem where real-time systems proliferate. A quick introduction to the ISA will be followed by specifics of TI's offering of this ISA as the Tiva and MSP432 Launchpad microcontroller. To make the development truly compelling we need a target application that has real-time constraints and multi-threading needs. To that end you will incrementally build a personal fitness device with Bluetooth connectivity. The Bluetooth connectivity will expose you to the evolving domain of Internet-of-things (IoT) where our personal fitness device running a custom RTOS will interact with a smartphone.

Using current sociological work on cultural trauma, Walldorf explains how master narratives strengthen (and weaken), and he develops clear predictions for how and when these narratives will shape policy. To Shape Our World For Good demonstrates the importance and explanatory power of the master-narrative argument, using a sophisticated combination of methods: quantitative analysis and eight cases in the postwar period that include Korea, Vietnam, and El Salvador during the Cold War and more recent cases in Iraq and Libya. The case studies provide the environment for a critical assessment of the connections among the politics of master narratives, pluralism, and the common good in contemporary US foreign policy and grand strategy. Walldorf adds new insight to our understanding of US expansionism and cautions against the dangers of misusing popular narratives for short-term political gains—a practice all too common both past and present.

Paying attention? Genuinely interested? The answer, writes Alex Pentland in Honest Signals, is that subtle patterns in how we interact with other people reveal our attitudes toward them. These unconscious social signals are not just a back channel or a complement to our conscious language; they form a separate communication network. Biologically based “honest signaling,” evolved from ancient primate signaling mechanisms, offers an unmatched window into our intentions, goals, and values. If we understand this ancient channel of communication, Pentland claims, we can accurately predict the outcomes of situations ranging from job interviews to first dates. Pentland, an MIT professor, has used a specially designed digital sensor worn like an ID badge—a “sociometer”—to monitor and analyze the back-and-forth patterns of signaling among groups of people. He and his researchers found that this second channel of communication, revolving not around words but around social relations, profoundly influences major decisions in our lives—even though we are largely unaware of it. Pentland presents the scientific background necessary for understanding this form of communication, applies it to examples of group behavior in real organizations, and shows how by “reading” our social networks we can become more successful at pitching an idea, getting a job, or closing a deal.
