Book excerpt: Light neutron-rich nuclei provide an excellent opportunity to study the changes in nuclear shell structure that occur with increasing neutron number and are an important testing ground for shell model theories. Probably one of the most striking examples of shell modification is the occurrence of intruder ground states, which signal an inversion of the normal shell ordering. Intruder ground states are observed around {sup 32}Mg (Z=10-12), ''the island of inversion'', and in {sup 11}Be. An analogous situation appears in the Z=2 He isotopes, where the intrusion of sd excitations in p-shell configurations becomes important in the heavy helium isotopes. Finally, for Z=8, recent data on {sup 20}O [1] show a reduction in the p-sd shell gap with increasing neutron number. It remains an open question whether the observed diminishing of the p-sd shell gap is restricted to O and F isotopes or extends also to neighboring nuclei. Here, we report preliminary results on {sup 18}N (Z=7), which is sufficiently far from stability to exhibit modified shell structure and yet still within the reach of stable beam facilities utilizing state-of-the art detector systems. {sup 18}N was produced in the {sup 9}Be({sup 11}B,2p){sup 18}N reaction at the 88'' Cyclotron at LBNL and studied using the LIBERACE-STARS detector array--an array of large area segmented silicon detectors (E-{Delta}E) and six HPGe Clover detectors. This experiment was the first to use a fusion-evaporation reaction to populate {sup 18}N. Previous information on the excited states of 18N came from {sup 18}C beta-decay [2] and charge-exchange reactions [3]. These are highly selective reactions and the fusion-evaporation reaction used here can provide a more comprehensive picture of the excitation spectrum. The beam energy of 50 MeV was chosen to optimize the cross section for the evaporation of 2 protons while simultaneously suppressing the evaporation of additional neutrons in conjunction with the 2p channel. The two proton tag cleanly selects the weak (sub milli-barn) {sup 18}N products. A natural lead catcher foil was mounted between the target and Silicon detectors (3 cm distance) to detect gamma-rays emitted from long lived (t{sub 1/2} 1 {micro}s) states. The {sup 18}N {gamma}-ray spectrum is shown in figure 1 and a preliminary level scheme in figure 2. New transitions were observed at 628 and 155 keV. The 628 and 114 keV transitions are shown to be in coincidence. The origin of the 298 keV line is currently being investigated. In ref. [2] a lifetime of 600 ns was assigned to the first excited state at 114 keV. However, from our measurement we estimate a lifetime value of 30 ns for this state; far shorter than the value of 600 ns given from the beta decay experiment.

Book excerpt: Understanding neutron-rich nuclear material is a topic at the forefront of physics research and has far-reaching implications for many areas of nuclear science including nuclear astrophysics, heavy-element nucleosynthesis, and the nuclear equation-of-state. Fusion studies are a unique tool for gaining access to an understanding of the nucleus far from stability. Systematic fusion measurements along isotopic chains have provided insight into how nuclear structure and dynamics change with increasing neutron number. Building on previous studies, the near-barrier fusion cross-sections for $^{41,45}$K,$^{36,44}$Ar+$^{16}$O,$^{28}$Si were measured using an energy vs time-of-flight approach. The measurements were conducted at Michigan State University's National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using the ReA3 facility. The measurements explored the behavior of fusion for both closed neutron-shell nuclei as well as open neutron-shell nuclei. The measured fusion excitation functions were compared to theoretical models showing the importance of both accurate density distributions and dynamics in fusion.

Book excerpt: It has been suggested in the past that special numbers of neutrons or protons in the nucleus form a particularly stable configuration.p1s The complete evidence for this has never been summarized, nor is it generally recognized how convincing this evidence is. That 20 neutrons or protons (Ca{sup40}) form a closed shell is predicted by the Hartree model. A number of calculations support this fact.p2s These considerations will not be repeated here. In this paper, the experimental facts indicating a particular stability of shells of 50 and 82 protons and of 50, 82, and 126 neutrons will be listed.

Book excerpt: The transition quadrupole moments, Qt, of rotational bands in the neutron-rich, even-mass 102-108Mo and 108-112Ru nuclei were measured with the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The nuclei were populated as fission fragments from 252Cf fission. The detector setup consisted of the Gammasphere spectrometer and the Hercules fast-plastic array. This allowed the measurement of asymmetric DSAM lineshapes at different Gammasphere detector angles with respect to the fission axis. The measurements typically covered the 6 to 16h spin range of the ground-state band and at least a strong transition in the [gamma] band. At moderate spin, the Qt moments are found to be reduced with respect to the values near the ground states, the latter being reported in the literature. An attempt has been made (by Afanasjev) to describe the data in the framework of cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogolyubov theory, and the results are reported in the present work as well as in a Physics Letters paper by Snyder et al. For 104Mo reliable predictions can be made. Here an oblate shape and a low-spin triaxial shape (deformation parameter [gamma]~-44°), predicted to be favored in other theoretical calculations, are ruled out by the data. There is some indication for a gradual change, at higher spin, from an initially prolate shape to a triaxial shape in 104Mo. The Qt data for 106Mo and 110,112Ru support this picture. The challenge of theory to describe the Qt data is addressed, which has to do with the very [gamma]-soft potential-energy surfaces. As a byproduct of the Qt analysis (which requires the determination of the intensities of the feeding transitions), the transition intensities of many weak high-spin or non-yrast states have been determined. These previously unknown intensity data are also reported. In the appendix, the results of an attenuation-coefficient analysis for [gamma]-ray angular distributions (due to recoil-in-vacuum) in heavy Ba isotopes are reported. These results are from a separate project, though from the same data set.

Book excerpt: The Highly Specialized Seminar on "Symmetries in Nuclear Structure", held in Erice, Italy, in March 2003, celebrated the career and the remarkable achievements of Francesco Iachello, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Since the development of the interacting boson model in the early 1970s, the ideas of Iachello have provided a variety of frameworks for understanding collective behaviour in nuclear structure, founded on the concepts of dynamical symmetries and spectrum-generating algebras. The original ideas, which were developed for the description of atomic nuclei, have now been successfully extended to cover spectroscopic behaviour in other fields, such as molecular or hadronic spectra. More recently, the suggestion by Iachello of critical point symmetries to treat nuclei in shape/phase transitional regions has opened an exciting new front for both theoreticians and experimentalists. The talks presented at the meeting covered many of the most active forefront areas of nuclear structure as well as other fields where ideas of symmetries are being explored. Topics in nuclear structure included extensive discussions on dynamical symmetries, critical point symmetries, phase transitions, statistical properties of nuclei, supersymmetry, mixed symmetry states, shears bands, pairing and clustering in nuclei, shape coexistence, exotic nuclei, dipole modes, and astrophysics, among others. In addition, important sessions focused on talks by European laboratory directors (or their representatives) outlining prospects for nuclear structure, and the application of symmetry ideas to molecular phenomena. Finally, a special lecture by Nobel laureate Alex Mueller, on s and d wave symmetry in superconductors, presented a unique insight into an allied field. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:* Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP / ISI Proceedings)* Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)* CC Proceedings -- Engineering & Physical Sciences

The analysis of B(E2) and B(M1) values from recent level lifetime measurements indicates that Sr (and perhaps also Zr) nuclei obtain their largest deformations for the nuclei at the onset of deformation, which suggest a ''phase change'' from a spherical to a maximally deformed shape. 15 refs., 6 figs.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Increasing dominance of negative parity intruder states in neutron-rich nuclei in the sd shell as $N$ approaches $20$ shows evidence of evolving shell structure. Systematically examining the structure of isotopes with increasing $N$ while filling the $ u d_{3/2}$ level highlights a large number of intruder configurations. These intruder configurations come from the decrease in energy to promote a neutron across the $N = 20$ shell gap. Such studies are needed to help in the refinement of the shell model and increase its predictive power for nuclei far from stability. The presented work chronicles a series of $^{18}$O($^{18}$O, $pn$) experiments conducted around the world to study high spin states in $^{34}$P, a nucleus in the $sd$ shell bordering the ``island of inversion'. One of these experiments which was conducted at Argonne National Laboratory where a 24 MeV neutron rich $^{18}$O beam impinged on a Ta backed $^{18}$O target, is presented here in great detail. The evaporated charged particles were detected with {sc microball} while the $gamma$ rays emitted were detected with {sc gammasphere}. A brief discussion of the theory of analysis techniques used in in-beam $gamma$-ray spectroscopy is presented followed by an in depth discussion of the analysis of this experiment.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on "Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons" or ganized in Budapest between 31st July and 5th August. 1972. was the successor of a meeting held seven years ago in Antwerp. The close links between the two conferences were revealed not in name alone but. more importantly. in the choice of subjects discussed. As in Antwerp. the lectures and contributions to the Budapest Conference could be grouped under the following five main headings: nuclear spectroscopy; the optical model; the statistical model and intermediate structures; the mechanism of neutron capture and non-statistical effects; and, finally. miscellaneous special topics. The invited papers on the one hand summarizing recent developments and current thinking in one of the above main topics. and the other surveying the most important results of the contributed papers submitted to the Conference. were presented on the plenary sessions. Most of the contributed papers were read in full on three parallel sessions. This volume contains the complete text of all the lectures delivered in the plenary sessions and abstracts of the contributed papers. The invited talks were presented at the Conference in a rather random order because of technical reasons, it seemed. however, more sensible to change their order according to their subjects and to print them grouped under the above main headings. Further more we divided the Proceedings into two main parts, the first containing only the lectures of summarizing character. the second including the abstracts of the contributions together with the surveying talks.

Book excerpt: The structure of Tc nuclei is extended to the moreneutron-rich regions based on measurements of prompt gamma rays from thespontaneous fission of 252Cf at Gammasphere. The level scheme of N=67neutron-rich (Z=43) 110Tc is established for the first time and that of111Tc is expanded. The ground-state band of 111Tc reaches theband-crossing region and the new observation of the weakly populatedalpha = -1/2 member of the band provides important information ofsignature splitting. The systematics of band crossings in the isotopicand isotonic chains and a CSM calculation suggest that the band crossingof the gs band of 111Tc is due to alignment of a pair of h11/2 neutrons. The best fit to signature splitting, branching ratios, and excitations ofthe ground-state band of 111Tc by RTRP model calculations result in ashape of epsilon2 = 0.32 and gamma = -26 deg. for this nucleus. Itstriaxiality is larger than that of 107Tc, to indicate increasingtriaxiality with increasing neutron number. The identification of theweakly-populated "K+2 satellite" band provides strong evidence for thelarge triaxiality of 111Tc. In 110Tc the four lowest-lying levelsobserved are very similar to those in 108Tc. At an excitation of 478.9keV above the lowest state observed, ten states of a delta I = 1 band areobserved. This band is very analogous to the delta I = 1 bands in106,108Tc, but it has greater signature splitting at higherspins.
