Book excerpt: The Shaman’s Daughter By: Ingrid Merkel In 2007, in a water cave on the peninsula of Yucatan, divers discovered the skull and skeleton of a teenage girl who died there some 13,000 years ago. The bones were moved to a museum. Ancient piety forbade the disturbance of the remains of the dead. In the novel, during the late Ice Age a shaman in Beringia divines this future sacrilege and sends his daughter on a journey to rectify the crime. As she traverses dozens of centuries on her journey through the American West, she encounters events and people in historical time. She recognizes the abyss between ancient and modern mentalities, and the conflict between scientific and her own spiritual understanding of nature. In the end, she resolves the conflict for herself, is liberated from the ancient laws, and emerges as a free woman whose freedom, however, demands a heavy price.

Book excerpt: When a new highway forces a North Carolina church to relocate its cemetery, a century-old mystery of major significance to its Cherokee neighbors is also unearthed. Now both communities must work together as the high price of progress tears through sacred land. The church enlists their Cherokee neighbors to assist with the relocation efforts, and the crew makes a startling discovery. The resulting investigation uncovers important information about the residents’ past and creates an unexpected link across history in the stories of Cistoo and Lokie, two young Cherokee women. Cistoo, born in 1790, had a dream. Not even the loss of her parents when she was a child and tribal shunning could stop her from becoming the first female shaman of her nation. Lokie, a contemporary Native American teen, likens the so-called progress to the dislocation of her people by the American colonists. These two young women from different centuries each come of age in the pursuit of shamanism and social justice. Can the answers to the modern graveyard mystery include redemption for both women?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, anthropologist Laurel Kendall did intensive fieldwork among South Korea’s (mostly female) shamans and their clients as a reflection of village women’s lives. In the intervening decades, South Korea experienced an unprecedented economic, social, political, and material transformation and Korean villages all but disappeared. And the shamans? Kendall attests that they not only persist but are very much a part of South Korean modernity. This enlightening and entertaining study of contemporary Korean shamanism makes the case for the dynamism of popular religious practice, the creativity of those we call shamans, and the necessity of writing about them in the present tense. Shamans thrive in South Korea’s high-rise cities, working with clients who are largely middle class and technologically sophisticated. Emphasizing the shaman’s work as open and mutable, Kendall describes how gods and ancestors articulate the changing concerns of clients and how the ritual fame of these transactions has itself been transformed by urban sprawl, private cars, and zealous Christian proselytizing. For most of the last century Korean shamans were reviled as practitioners of antimodern superstition; today they are nostalgically celebrated icons of a vanished rural world. Such superstition and tradition occupy flip sides of modernity’s coin—the one by confuting, the other by obscuring, the beating heart of shamanic practice. Kendall offers a lively account of shamans, who once ministered to the domestic crises of farmers, as they address the anxieties of entrepreneurs whose dreams of wealth are matched by their omnipresent fears of ruin. Money and access to foreign goods provoke moral dilemmas about getting and spending; shamanic rituals express these through the longings of the dead and the playful antics of greedy gods, some of whom have acquired a taste for imported whiskey. No other book-length study captures the tension between contemporary South Korean life and the contemporary South Korean shamans’ work. Kendall’s familiarity with the country and long association with her subjects permit nuanced comparisons between a 1970s "then" and recent encounters—some with the same shamans and clients—as South Korea moved through the 1990s, endured the Asian Financial Crisis, and entered the new millennium. She approaches her subject through multiple anthropological lenses such that readers interested in religion, ritual performance, healing, gender, landscape, material culture, modernity, and consumption will find much of interest here.

Book excerpt: This book on Nanai shamanic culture is based on first-hand information provided by shamans and recorded in the years between 1980 and 2012, a time of rapid socio-cultural change in Russia. It sheds light on the lively indigenous discourse in which social factors such as the splitting of society into different paternal lineages relates to spiritual troubles that Nanai people experience as collective ‘shamanic disease.’ But inter-clan confrontations are not only mediated in shamanic rituals, as these must not be separated from folk narratives, dances and other forms of art. Furthermore, the book provides profound insights into the plurality of contradictory discourses on indigenous knowledge as well as those delivered in non-indigenous contexts. The latter arose or became more intense in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, and often led to experiments in new shamanic practices.

Book excerpt: The Ur-Dream, the Cosmic Mystery, the Realms beyond the Foundation of the World--all different names for a reality, a series of realities, created by the power and energy of all the living souls on the earth. Sometimes, death can hide inside a mystery. Sometimes, a dream can kill. Zea and Tage, along with their friends in the Mandala Council, have journeyed into the Ur-Dream to discover the truth...and while they only just escaped being destroyed, they may still have been broken. Everything in the lives of these gifted young dreamers is coming to a head: what they witnessed in dreams is leading them into ever more peril within the waking world, and their own deep connection is in danger of fraying apart like a worn tapestry. Most serious of all, the next Initiate, he who would become the new Shaman, must be announced, or the tensions straining at the mixed nation of Athaelkandalae will shred the soul of its populace, as irrevocably as their ancient enemies the Kastri threaten to ruin their bodies. For the war with the people of Cybelle, the Dark Goddess, still rages in the north. An ominous drought is hot upon the land. And without a new hero to believe in, to unite them, the citizens of Athaelkandalae will turn upon each other before either one of those threats brings down its doom. Such is the power of belief. Part Three continues The Shaman's Daughter, a visionary fantasy, and the first volume in The Cosmic Mystery Series.

Book excerpt: Proposing a new theoretical framework, this book explores Shamanism’s links with violence from a global perspective. Contributors, renowned anthropologists and authorities in the field, draw on their research in Mongolia, China, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, India, Siberia, America, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan to investigate how indigenous shamanic cultures dealt, and are still dealing with, varying degrees of internal and external violence. During ceremonies shamans act like hunters and warriors, dealing with many states related to violence, such as collective and individual suffering, attack, conflict and antagonism. Indigenous religious complexes are often called to respond to direct and indirect competition with more established cultural and religious traditions which undermine the sociocultural structure, the sense of identity and the state of well-being of many indigenous groups. This book explores a more sensitive vision of shamanism, closer to the emic views of many indigenous groups.
