Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By connecting Shakespeare's language to the stunning artwork that depicted the end of the world, this study provides not only provides a new reading of Shakespeare but illustrates how apocalyptic art continues to influence popular culture today. Drawing on extant examples of medieval imagery, Roger Christofides uses poststructuralist and psychoanalytic accounts of how language works to shed new light on our understanding of Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, and King Lear. He then links Shakespeare's dependence on his audience to appreciate the allusions made to the religious paintings to the present day. For instance, popular television series like Battlestar Galactica, seminal horror movies such as An American Werewolf in London and Carrie and recent novels like Cormac McCarthy's The Road. All draw on imagery that can be traced directly back to the depictions of the Doom, an indication of the cultural power these vivid imaginings of the end of the world have in Shakespeare's day and now.

Book excerpt: Following his recent study, The Catholicism of Shakespeare's Plays, Fr. Peter Milward examines more closely the themes of doomsday and judgement in the great dramas. As recent research establishes ever more securely Shakespeare's own Catholic background, we are invited to consider the symbolism of the plays from the perspective of the Elizabethan and Jacobean recusant community of which the poet was a member. Fr. Milward draws attention to the profound feeling manifest in the treatment of the desolation of England following the destruction of her Catholic culture, and the persecution of the Church by the new Establishment -- long missed in critical studies. At the end of the second Christian millennium, when the popular mind has been preoccupied with strange predictions of doom, we follow Shakespeare's reflections on the real judgement then being visited upon an apostate nation, and see how England's real and only hope lies in a return to her first allegiance to a greater Royal supremacy than that of the Tudors, under a loftier Queen -- not Elizabeth, but Mary who reigns in Heaven.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hundreds of biblical references in Shakespeare's plays give ample evidence that he was well acquainted with Scripture. Not only is the range of his biblical references impressive, but also the aptness with which he makes them. Hamlet and Othello each have more than fifty biblical references. No study of Shakespeare's plays is complete that ignores Shakespeare's use of scripture. The Bibles that Shakespeare knew, however, were not those that are in use today. By the time the King James Bible appeared in 1611, Shakespeare's career was all but over, and the Anglican liturgy that is evident in his plays is likewise one that few persons are acquainted with. This volume provides a comprehensive survey of the English Bibles of Shakespeare's day, notes their similarities and differences, and indicates which version the playwright knew best. The thorny question of what constitutes a valid biblical reference is also discussed. The study of Shakespeare's biblical references is not based on secondary sources. The author owned one of the world's largest collections of early English bibles, including over one hundred copies of the Geneva bible and numerous editions of other Bibles, prayer books, and books of homilies of Shakespeare's day. To be of real worth, a study of Shakespeare's biblical references should also enable the reader to determine which references Shakespeare borrowed from his plot sources and which he added from his own memory as part of his design for the play. The author studies every source that Shakespeare is known to have read or consulted before writing each play and has examined the biblical references in those sources. Shaheen then points out which biblical references in his literary sources Shakespeare accepted, and how he adapted them in his plays. This information is especially valuable when assessing the theological meanings that are sometimes imposed on his plays, meanings that often go beyond what Shakespeare intended or what his audience must have understood. Biblical References in Shakespeare's Plays is considerably broader in scope than any other study of its kind and provides the scholarly checks and balances in dealing with the subject that previous studies lacked. .

Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the ways in which recent Shakespeare films portray anxieties about an impending global wasteland, technological alienation, spiritual destruction, and the effects of globalization. Films covered include Titus, William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, Almereyda's Hamlet, Revengers Tragedy, Twelfth Night, The Passion of the Christ, Radford's The Merchant of Venice, The Lion King, and Godard's King Lear, among others that directly adapt or reference Shakespeare. Essays chart the apocalyptic mise-en-scenes, disorienting imagery, and topsy-turvy plots of these films, using apocalypse as a theoretical and thematic lens.

We know he totally understands the truth of the human condition. What if ... your soul (your true self) has been imprisoned by your mind since you were born? What if ... hidden in his plays is the key to unlock it. Shakespeare's Revelation reveals the mystery of what the key is. Isn't it time you set your self free? As you read Shakespeare's Revelation you'll see, hidden in the allegories, symbols and metaphors in his plays, Shakespeare is repeatedly telling us how we have banished our own soul and been imprisoned by our minds. Neither the church, science, philosophy, or behavioural psychology understand this axiomatic truth and its implications. They are therefore powerless to end human suffering. Shakespeare is repeatedly telling us the power to gain freedom and fulfilment lies in our soul. In his plays he has hidden the key to the door of our soul's prison. Read Shakespeare's Revelation - and grab this key with both hands.

Book excerpt: Through considerable detective work, this work sets out to show that Julius Caeser was the first play performed at the new Globe Theatre on 12 June 1599. Drawing on many areas of expertise, which are rarely allied in Shakespeare scholarship to such an extent, including biblical, liturgical, social and theatrical history, the author sheds new light not only on Julius Caeser but on a variety of accepted beliefs. These include: why Hamlet was not crowned king when his father died; why Brutus would not swear to murder Caeser; why the Elizabethan authorities retained the Julian calender; and why the orthodox dates of the first composition of both Twelfth Night and Hamlet can be called into question.

Book excerpt: Through close readings of a wide range of plays and poems, Kiernan Ryan's compelling polemic sets out to reclaim the idea of Shakespeare's timeless universality from reactionary and radical critics alike. Its argument is driven throughout by the belief that at this moment in history the need to recognise and activate the revolutionary potential of Shakespeare's drama is more urgent than ever. The volume has been shortlisted for the European Society for the Study of English 2016 Prize for the best critical study in the field of Literatures in the English Language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible was everywhere in Shakespeare's England. Through sermons, catechisms, treatises, artwork, literature and, of course, biblical reading itself, the stories and language of the Bible pervaded popular and elite culture. In recent years, scholars have demonstrated how thoroughly biblical allusions saturate Shakespearean plays. But Shakespeare's audiences were not simply well versed in the Bible's content - they were also steeped in the practices and methods of biblical interpretation. Reformation and counter-reformation debate focused not just on the biblical text, but - crucially - on how to read the text. The Bible on the Shakespearean Stage is the first volume to integrate the study of Shakespeare's plays with the vital history of Reformation practices of biblical interpretation. Bringing together the foremost international scholars in the field of 'Shakespeare and the Bible', these essays explore Shakespeare's engagement with scriptural interpretation in the tragedies, histories, comedies, and romances.

Book excerpt: First published to critical acclaim in 1989, this book is now recognised as one of the most original and influential critical studies of Shakespeare to have appeared in recent times. For this brand-new edition, Kiernan Ryan has not only revised and updated the text throughout, but he has also added a great deal of new material, expanding the book to twice the size of the first edition. The section on Shakespearean comedy now includes an essay on Shakespeare's first scintillating experiment in the genre, The Comedy of Errors, and a study of his most perplexing problem play, Measure for Measure. A provocative new last chapter, '"Dreaming on things to come": Shakespeare and the Future of Criticism', reveals how much modern criticism can learn from the appropriation of Shakespeare by Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw and James Joyce. Students, teachers, and anyone with a passionate interest in what the plays have to say to us today, will find this modern classic of Shakespeare criticism indispensable.
