Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's End, and Other Irish Plays The second piece in this volume is an attempt to treat the same theme in a lighter and more popular form. The best that can be said of it is that it succeeded in its object; for, although The Piper had to face the hostility of many audiences at the Abbey before they grasped its meaning, An Imaginary Conversation at once became popular. If I name any, however, there are four I would name together. There is my old friend, long since dead, Lawrence Kelly, of County Wexford, who first told me Irish folk-stories, adding to the wonderment of my boyhood with his tales of Finn mccool, Dean Swift, and The Red-haired Man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Links Between Ireland and Shakespeare This little book does not aspire to the rank of a work of criticism, scholarship, or research. It is a collection of links between Ireland and Shakespeare put together in leisure moments by one who is interested in both subjects. The idea of gathering these links into a chain was suggested by an article, contributed by Mr. Justice Madden to the Shakespeare Book of Homage and was encouraged by a perusal of the Introduction to Dr. Sigerson's Bards of the Gael and Gall. After the book was planned and begun, the writer was referred to Mr. David Comyn's Irish Illustrations to Shakespeare reprinted in pamphlet form from the Weekly Freeman in 1894. It is a pioneer work of great value by an author who was not only an accomplished Irish scholar, but also a man of wide culture; and it contains much information not to be found in this book, which was designed upon different lines. The author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to Professor Osborn Bergin, M.R.I.A., and to Mr. R. I. Best, M.R.I.A., for having read some of his proofs, when he was engaged in public work in the country, and for several valuable suggestions. Book excerpt: Titus Andronicus * Timon of Athens * Coriolanus Each Edition Includes: Comprehensive explanatory notes placed on pages facing the text of the play Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography Titus Andronicus This, Shakespeare’s earliest tragedy, is also his bloodiest and most horror-filled. A Roman general, to appease the spirit of his dead son, sacrifices the son of a captive Goth queen—and sets in motion a remorseless cycle of revenge and counterrevenge. The play’s vivid spectacle of violence stuns audiences with rape, murder, mutilation, and unmitigated cruelty. Timon of Athens This stark drama—in some ways Shakespeare’s most bitter play—is a brilliant psychological portrait of a wealthy Athenian lord whose extraordinary trust and love for others turns to hate and spite when, bankrupted by his generosity, he is overwhelmed by the indifference and ingratitude of those he had thought friends. Coriolanus The arrogance of a Roman military hero puts him in conflict with the people of Rome when the aristocrat is unwilling to compromise with the commoners he so despises. Compellingly relevant today, Shakespeare’s last tragedy—from its opening scene of popular unrest to its chilling climax of betrayal and murder—takes an unwavering, ironic look at political extremism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the influence of Shakespeare on drama in Ireland, Rebecca Steinberger examines works by two representative playwrights: Sean O'Casey (1880-1964) and Brian Friel (1929-). Shakespeare's plays, grounded in history, nationalism, and imperialism, embody an empathy for the Irish other. Irish dramatists' appropriations of Shakespeare, Steinberger argues, were both a reaction to the language of domination and a means to support their revision of the Irish as Subject.

Book excerpt: The Taming of the Shrew Robust and bawdy, The Taming of the Shrew captivates audiences with outrageous humor as Katharina, the shrew, engages in a contest of wills–and love–with her bridegroom, Petruchio, in a comedy of unmatched theatrical brilliance, filled with visual gags and witty repartee. A Midsummer Night's Dream Fairy magic, love spells, and an enchanted wood turn the mismatched rivalries of four young lovers into a marvelous mix-up of desire and enchantment, all touched by Shakespeare’s inimitable vision of the intriguing relationship between dreams and the waking world. The Merchant of Venice This dark comedy of love and money contains one of the truly mythic figures in literature–Shylock, the Jewish moneylender. The “pound of flesh” he demands as payment of Antonio’s debt has become a universal metaphor for vengeance. Here, pathos and farce combine with moral complexity and romantic entanglements, to display the extraordinary power and range of Shakespeare at his best. Twelfth Night Set in a topsy-turvy world like a holiday revel, this comedy juxtaposes a romantic plot involving separated twins and mistaken identity with a more satiric one about the humiliation of a pompous killjoy. The hilarity is touched with melancholy, and the play ends, not with laughter, but with a clown’s plaintive song. Each Edition Includes: • Comprehensive explanatory notes • Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship • Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English • Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories • An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography
