Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairies, magic and creatures from another dimension, "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" got it all! If you ever saw and loved "Get Over It" with Kirsten Dunst, this one is for you! This play is an indulgence both in the theatre and on the page as one of William Shakespeare’s sprightliest works. Set in Ancient Greece, the wood at night disrupts the boundaries between three distinct groups, and no mortal is in control. The beautiful Hermia is in a pickle. Her father has forbidden her to marry her true love, Lysander, wanting her to marry Demetrius, in whom she has no interest. The love triangle develops as it is revealed Hermia’s best friend Helena is in love with Demetrius. Including broken hearts, mistaken identities and supernatural transformations, this play reflects the drama of the things we would do for love and the irrational behavior of the people under its spell. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is widely considered the world's greatest dramatist and is often referred to as England's national poet or the Bard. Most famous for his timeless plays, he also wrote a multitude of poems and sonnets. Shakespeare was the blockbuster writer of his day, his many works concerning universal themes of life, love, death, revenge, grief, jealousy, murder, magic, and mystery. Among some of his most famous are "Macbeth", "Romeo and Juliet", and "Hamlet", but the list is long, and many continue to be studied and performed, both their original form and modern adaptations.

Book excerpt: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM IS A COMEDY PLAY BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN WRITTEN BETWEEN 1590 AND 1596. IT PORTRAYS THE EVENTS SURROUNDING THE MARRIAGE OF THE DUKE OF ATHENS, THESEUS, AND HIPPOLYTA. THESE INCLUDE THE ADVENTURES OF FOUR YOUNG ATHENIAN LOVERS AND A GROUP OF SIX AMATEUR ACTORS (MECHANICALS), WHO ARE CONTROLLED AND MANIPULATED BY THE FAIRIES WHO INHABIT THE FOREST IN WHICH MOST OF THE PLAY IS SET. THE PLAY IS ONE OF SHAKESPEARE'S MOST POPULAR WORKS FOR THE STAGE AND IS WIDELY PERFORMED ACROSS THE WORLD. A Midsummer Night's Dream act IV, scene I. Engraving from a painting by Henry Fuseli, published 1796. It is unknown exactly when A Midsummer Night's Dream was written or first performed, but on the basis of topical references and an allusion to Edmund Spenser's Epithalamion, it is usually dated 1595 or early 1596. Some have theorised that the play might have been written for an aristocratic wedding (for example that of Elizabeth Carey, Lady Berkeley), while others suggest that it was written for the Queen to celebrate the feast day of St. John, but no evidence exists to support this theory. In any case, it would have been performed at The Theatre and, later, The Globe. Though it is not a translation or adaptation of an earlier work, various sources such as Ovid's Metamorphoses and Chaucer's "The Knight's Tale" served as inspiration. According to John Twyning, the play's plot of four lovers undergoing a trial in the woods was intended as a "riff" on Der Busant, a Middle High German poem. About the autor William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor. He was born on 26 April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was a successful local businessman and his mother was the daughter of a landowner. Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and nicknamed the Bard of Avon. He wrote about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, of which the authorship of some is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Set in Athens and a mystical forest, it involves the interwoven romantic escapades of four young lovers, complicated by a group of amateur actors and the mischievous interventions of fairies. The lovers include Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena, whose romantic entanglements create much of the humor and confusion. The forest is ruled by Oberon and Titania, the fairy king and queen, who are also experiencing marital discord. Puck, Oberon's mischievous servant, uses magical potions to create even more romantic chaos. Additionally, a group of amateur actors, led by the bumbling Bottom, is preparing a play for the Duke's wedding. Through a series of magical manipulations, misunderstandings, and a play-within-a-play, all the romantic entanglements are eventually resolved, leading to a joyous celebration and the blessing of the three couples' unions. The play explores themes of love, infatuation, the supernatural, and the interplay between illusion and reality, all presented in a humorous and enchanting manner. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" remains one of Shakespeare's most beloved and enduring works, celebrated for its memorable characters and witty wordplay.

Book excerpt: In Shakespeare's hand the comic mode became an instrument for exploring the broad territory of the human situation, including much that had normally been reserved for tragedy. Once the reader recognizes that justification for such an assumption is presented repeatedly in the earlier comedies -- from The Comedy of Errors to Twelfth Night -- he has less difficulty in dispensing with the currently fashionable classifications of the later comedies as problem plays and romances or tragicomedies and thus in seeing them all as manifestations of a single impulse. Bryant shows how Shakespeare, early a.
