This book was released on 2007 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By Shakespeare's time, the debate over legitimate medical practice had become vociferous and public. The powerful College of Physicians fought hard to discredit some and rein in others, but many resisted, denied, or ignored its authority. Dramatists did not fail to notice the turmoil, nor did they fail to comment on it - and no one commented more profoundly on stage than William Shakespeare. Going beyond the usual questions posed about Shakespeare and medicine, this study, which won the first Jay L. Halio Prize in Shakespeare and Early Modern Studies, explores Shakespeare's response to the early modern struggle for control of English medical practice. It does not rehearse the fundamentals of early modern medical thought such as the humoral system that have been more than adequately covered numerous times elsewhere. Instead, it undertakes a reading of popular English medical tracts in an effort to reconstruct the terms in which medical practitioners of all kinds were understood. injury were busy hearing such stories, and in a time of spectacular outbreaks of infectious disease, in a time of religious transition, and in a time of shifting modes of political power, such stories held especial fascination. Todd Pettigrew is an Associate Professor Cape Breton University.

Book excerpt: Physicians, readers and scholars have long been fascinated by Shakespeare's medical language and the presence of healers, wise women and surgeons in his work. This dictionary includes entries about ailments, medical concepts, cures and, taking into account recent critical work on the early modern body, bodily functions, parts, and pathologies in Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Medical Language will provide a comprehensive guide for those needing to understand specific references in the plays, in particular, archaic diagnoses or therapies ('choleric', 'tub-fast') and words that have changed their meanings ('phlegmatic', 'urinal'); those who want to learn more about early modern medical concepts ('elements', 'humors'); and those who might have questions about the embodied experience of living in Shakespeare's England. Entries reveal what terms and concepts might mean in the context of Shakespeare's plays, and the significance that a particular disease, body part or function has in individual plays and the Shakespearean corpus at large.

Excerpt: ... that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty; make thick my blood stop up th' access and passage to remorse; that no compunctious visitings of nature shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between th* effect and it. Come to my woman's breasts, and take my milk for gall, you murdering ministers, wherever in your sightless sub stances you wait on nature's mischief. Come, thick night, and pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peep through the blankness of the dark to cry, "Hold, hold!" Of this kind of cases we find ample records. I will quote from Deboismont: "Dom. Duhaget was of a good family in Gascony: he had been a captain in the infantry for twenty years; I never knew any one possessing any more amiability or piety. We had," he related, "a friar at, where I was before I came to Pierre Ch&tel, of a melancholy disposition and a gloomy character, who was known to be a somnambulist. Sometimes, during the paroxysms, he would leave his cell, and re-enter it alone; at others, he would lose himself, and have to be brought back. His case had been treated, and as the returns were very rare, it had ceased to attract attention. One night, I was sitting up beyond my usual hour for retiring. I was engaged in looking over some papers in my desk, when I heard the door open, aud saw the friar enter, in a complete state of somnambulism. His eyes were open, but fixed (How truthfully Shakespeare notes this fact in the case of Lady M.); he had on only the garments in which he slept, and held a large knife in his hand. He went straight to my bed; appeared to satisfy himself by feeling, that I was really there; after which he struck...
Book Synopsis A Doctor's Shakespeare by : William Shakespeare
Download or read book A Doctor's Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of 740 quotations of medical interest grew out of a thorough reading and re-reading of William Shakespeare’s 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and the several long poems. The emotional and physical problems of his characters are frequently mentioned in the plays, and disease and remedy are often used as metaphor to clarify non-medical situations. Although the science of Medicine has changed enormously in recent times, the humanistic aspects have not. Shakespeare’s comments on illness and its effects are still quite pertinent. His unique insight, archaic style, and creative language bring a certain freshness and charm to our continuing contemplation of the art of Medicine. Dr. Foster’s limited interspersed comments are meant to provide a background picture of Elizabethan times and Medicine and, where needed, to remind the reader of the setting of the quotation in the plays and poems.
