It was first built in the 11th century and was expanded and fortified throughout the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, Skipton Castle played a significant role in several important historical events, including the English Civil War. During the Wars of the Roses, Skipton Castle was owned by the Clifford family, a prominent Yorkshire family that supported the House of Lancaster. The castle was a symbol of the family's power and loyalty to the crown. However, during the War of the Roses, the Clifford family changed their loyalty to the House of York, and the castle came under siege several times by the Lancastrian army.
