Book excerpt: This supernatural twist on the classic detective series sees Sherlock Holmes and Watson encounter a grisly discovery, a giant monster, and a deadly conspiracy It’s 1919. While the world celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Holmes and Watson are called to a strange crime scene. A severed hand has been found on the bank of the Thames—a hand belonging to a soldier who supposedly died in the trenches two years previously. But the hand is fresh and shows signs that it was recently amputated . . . So how has it ended up back in London two years after its owner was killed in France? Warned by Sherlock’s brother Mycroft to cease their investigation, and only barely surviving an attack by a superhuman creature, Holmes and Watson begin to suspect a conspiracy at the very heart of the British government.

Book excerpt: This book contrasts the proposals of the Royal Commission of the late 1970s with the very different set of priorities enshrined in the 1989 White Paper and describes how the changes between the two documents came about. It argues that the NHS reforms should be seen not as the inevitable product of technical developments nor as a consensus response to narrowly managerial difficulties within the NHS, but rather as part of a wider political strategy towards state provision of welfare. The book strongly emphasises the uneven geographical impacts of post-1979 changes, a topic usually underplayed by analysts of social policy, and draws heavily on previously unpublished material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private Charity and Public Inquiry A History of the Filer and Peterson Commissions Eleanor L. Brilliant The story of two commissions that had a major impact on philanthropic activity and public policy. In the midst of the tumultuous 1960s, the United States Congress turned its attention to issues of tax policy and philanthropy, with special focus on abuses and responsibilities of philanthropic foundations. During the period marked by passage of the Tax Reform Act of 1969, John D. Rockefeller 3rd was one of the staunchest defenders of philanthropy in public and in behind-the-scenes lobbying in Washington. This book is a history of two major commissions initiated by Rockefeller: The Commission on Foundations and Private Philanthropy (1969-1970), dubbed "The Peterson Commission" after its chairman, Peter G. Peterson; and The Commission on Private Philanthropy and Public Needs (1973-1977), headed by John H. Filer, and known as "The Filer Commission." Brilliant analyzes the significance of the two commissions with regard to philanthropy and public policy, and in light of the value that Americans place on voluntary associations. Using original documents of the two commissions, archival material, and extensive interviews with key informants, Brilliant shows how powerful individuals and groups influence tax policy in the United States. Her analysis provides new insights into the two sides of philanthropy doing good and getting rewarded for it through tax benefits. Eleanor L. Brilliant, Professor of Social Work at Rutgers University, teaches courses on social policy, management, organization theory, and women's issues. She is on the Graduate Faculty of Rutgers University and is a member of the Women's Studies Faculty. She is currently Vice President for Administration/Secretary of ARNOVA. Among her major publications are The United Way: Dilemmas of Organized Charity and The Urban Development Corporation: Private Interests and Public Authority. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Albert Shelton was a medical missionary and explorer who spent nearly twenty years in the Tibetan borderlands at the start of the last century. During the Great Game era, the Sheltons' sprawling station in Kham was the most remote and dangerous mission on earth. Raising his family in a land of banditry and civil war, caught between a weak Chinese government and the British Raj, Shelton proved to be a resourceful frontiersman. One of the West's first interpreters of Tibetan culture, during the course of his work in Tibet, he was praised by the Western press as a family man, revered doctor, respected diplomat, and fearless adventurer. To the American public, Dr. Albert Shelton was Daniel Boone, Wyatt Earp, and the apostle Paul on a new frontier. Driven by his goal of setting up a medical mission within Lhasa, the seat of the Dalai Lama and a city off-limits to Westerners for hundreds of years, Shelton acted as a valued go-between for the Tibetans and Chinese. Recognizing his work, the Dalai Lama issued Shelton an invitation to Lhasa. Tragically, while finalizing his entry, Shelton was shot to death on a remote mountain trail in the Himalayas. Set against the exciting history of early twentieth century Tibet and China, Pioneer in Tibet offers a window into the life of a dying breed of adventurer.

A variety of IoT-based applications are being used in different sectors and have succeeded in providing huge benefits to the users. As a revolution, IoT overtook the entire global landscape with its presence in almost every sector, including smart cities, smart grid, intelligent transportation, healthcare, education, and so on. This technological revolution also moved to the machines, converting them into intelligent computers that can make real-time decisions and communicate with each other, forming an Internet of Systems/Machines. The use of secure light-weight protocols will help us in developing environment-friendly and energy-efficient IoT systems. IoT is an emerging and recent area of research, adopted for many applications, and there is a need to investigate further challenges in all aspects of it. This book will provide information on fundamentals, architectures, communication protocols, use of AI, existing applications, and emerging research trends in IoT. It follows a theoretical approach to describe the fundamentals for beginners as well as a practical approach with the implementation of case studies for intermediate and advanced readers.
