Book Synopsis Cost-Benefit Analysis and the Theory of Fuzzy Decisions by : K. K. Dompere
Download or read book Cost-Benefit Analysis and the Theory of Fuzzy Decisions written by K. K. Dompere and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-07-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the identification and measurement theory of costs and benefits in a fuzzy information environment. The process of cost-benefit analysis is presented, requiring the development of real cost-benefit databases and the construction of cost-benefit criterion. These steps are accomplished with various theoretical constructs that provide sets of self-contained algorithms for application. This book integrates cost-benefit analysis, theory of fuzzy decisions and social decisions into unified decision algorithms accessible to practitioners, researchers, and graduate students. It features the essentials of fuzzy mathematics and algorithms in a comprehensive way, exposing a multi-disciplinary approach for the development of cost-benefit decision making in the framework of fuzziness and soft computing.
Book Synopsis Evaluating Public Expenditures when Governments Must Rely on Distortionary Taxation by : James E. Anderson
Download or read book Evaluating Public Expenditures when Governments Must Rely on Distortionary Taxation written by James E. Anderson and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September 1998 This paper offers simple, robust operational rules for evaluating public spending in distorted economies-rules that are more complex than the border price rule but involve only one additional parameter: the marginal cost of funds. Anderson and Martin provide simple, robust rules for evaluating public spending in distorted economies. Their analysis integrates within a clean, unified framework previous treatments of project evaluation as special cases. Until recently it was widely believed that government projects could be evaluated without reference to the cost of raising tax revenues. The classic border price rule provided a simple and apparently robust procedure for project evaluation. But the border price rule developed in shadow pricing literature requires very strong assumptions to be valid when governments must rely on distortionary taxation and are unable or unwilling to cover the costs of the project through user charges. Anderson and Martin use a rigorous formal model in which governments must rely on distortionary taxation to explore the welfare consequences of governments providing different types of goods. They show that the border price rule is accurate only in one rather special case: when project outputs are sold at their full value to consumers - something that is difficult to do with a public good such as a lighthouse or a functioning judicial system. When a publicly provided good is sold for less than its full value to consumers, one must take into account the implications for government revenues of providing public goods. Anderson and Martin present project evaluation rules that are more complex than the border price rule but involve only one additional parameter: the compensated marginal cost of funds for the taxes on which the government relies. The rules suggested involve adjusting the fiscal revenues the project generates (or destroys) by the marginal cost of funds before comparing them with the assessed benefits to project producers and consumers. In the case of a protected but tradable good provided by the government, the result is a shadow price that is below the world market price. Where projects produce output that is sold without charge, the costs of the project inputs must also be adjusted using the marginal cost of funds. In intermediate cases where the government levies user charges that fall below the full value of the goods to the private sector, the revenue shortfall from the project must be adjusted by the marginal cost of funds. This paper-a product of Trade, Development Research Group-is part of a larger effort in the group to assess the consequences of policy interventions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus of definitions for the theoretical sciences is (the province of) the habitus of the intellective intention, for the practical sciences, however, that of the effective intention; the objects and ends constitute the specific differ ence There is nothing in the intellect that has not already been in the senses, that is, in the sensory organs, that has not already been in sensible things from which are distinguished things not perceptible to the senses. Nothing can be of the mind, sensation and the thing inferred therefrom except the operation itself. Real learning is cognition of things in themselves. It thus has the basis of its certainty in the known thing. This is established in two ways: by demon stration in the case of contemplative things, and by induction in the case of things perceptible to the senses. In contrast with real learning there is pos sible, probable and fictive learning. Antonius Gvilielmus Amo Afer (1827) This research has been long in the making. Its conception began in my last years in the doctoral program at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa. It was simultaneously conceived with my two books on the Neo Keynesian Theory of Optimal aggregate investment and output dynamics [201] [202] as well as reflections on the methodology of decision-choice rationality and development economics [440] [441]. Economic theories and social policies were viewed to have, among other things, one impor tant thing in common in that they relate to decision making under different.

Book Synopsis Applied Welfare Economics by : Massimo Florio
Download or read book Applied Welfare Economics written by Massimo Florio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the effect of a new infrastructure on the well-being of a local community? Is a tax reform desirable? Does the privatization of a telecommunication provider increase social welfare? To answer these questions governments and their policy advisors should have in mind an operative definition of social welfare, and cannot rely on simple official statistics, such as GDP. The price we observe are often misleading as welfare signals, and costs and benefits for the society should be based on ‘shadow prices’, revealing the social opportunity costs of goods and of changes of the world. This book explains how to apply these welfare economics ideas to the real world. After a theoretical discussion of the concept of social welfare, a critical analysis of the traditional doctrine of welfare economics embodied in the Two Fundamental Theorems, and a presentation of social cost-benefit analysis, the book introduce the readers to an applied framework. This includes the empirical estimation of shadow prices of goods, of the social cost of labour and capital, the assessment of risk. This book also includes the state of the art of international experience with CBA, including ex-post evaluation of major projects, economic rates of return in different sectors, and a case study on privatisation, is presented. This book offers a unique and original blend of theory, empirics and experience. The theoretical discussion clarifies why shadow prices are not virtual market equilibrium prices, as they arise as the solution of a planning problem, often with governments and economic agents constrained in their information and powers. The empirical chapters show how to compute proxies of the shadow prices in simple ways. The experience chapters draw from first hand research, gained by the Author and his collaborators over many years of advisory work for the European Commission and other international and national institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers, in depth, some valuation methods and aspects of cost benefit analysis, and policy making in environmental economics. Part I contains a number of contingent valuation studies for non-market assets. Part II consists of contributions on the valuation of health and life, and deals with the benefits of reduced morbidity from air pollution control. In Part III, cost benefit analysis for environmental policy-making is discussed in a disequilibrium setting, and in a macroeconomic context. Finally, Part IV deals with aspects of policy-making, particularly benefit estimation for complex policies, and the international aspects of transboundary air pollution in Europe. The book should not only appeal to students and researchers in university departments of economics and ``environmental sciences'' but also to those working in public organisations and associated advisory institutes which are concerned with environmental problems.

Book Synopsis Toward a General Theory of Exchange by : Javaid R. Khwaja
Download or read book Toward a General Theory of Exchange written by Javaid R. Khwaja and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new economy, under the impetus of the ever-widening outreach of the Internet, is undergoing a transition. In the meantime, there's also been a shift to the information paradigm, with its emphasis on lack of foresight. These processes have almost completely supplanted the concept of market that was once one of the most cardinal features of conventional economic theory. In Toward a General Theory of Exchange: Strategic Decisions and Complexity, author Dr. Javaid R. Khwaja traces the slow melting of the market, the most ubiquitous contraption and the summum bonum of economic science, as an organized manifestation of complexity, with its wide-ranging impact on the flow of funds. Using the historical background of economic theories, this study blends the interdisciplinary range and fills the vacuum that has existed among current conventional economic theory, the theory of strategic decision making, actor-network theory, the domain of law and economics, and the science of complexity. An observer of economic development for several decades, Khwaja shows the relationship between technology and economics and how it affects social exchanges and trends.
