Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the turmoil of the Ming-Qing dynastic transition in seventeenth-century China, some intellectuals sought refuge in romantic memories from what they perceived as cataclysmic events. This volume presents two memoirs by famous men of letters, Reminiscences of the Plum Shadows Convent by Mao Xiang (1611–93) and Miscellaneous Records of Plank Bridge by Yu Huai (1616–96), that recall times spent with courtesans. They evoke the courtesan world in the final decades of the Ming dynasty and the aftermath of its collapse. Mao Xiang chronicles his relationship with the courtesan Dong Bai, who became his concubine two years before the Ming dynasty fell. His mournful remembrance of their life together, written shortly after her early death, includes harrowing descriptions of their wartime sufferings as well as idyllic depictions of romantic bliss. Yu Huai offers a group portrait of Nanjing courtesans, mixing personal memories with reported anecdotes. Writing fifty years after the fall of the Ming, he expresses a deep nostalgia for courtesan culture that bears the toll of individual loss and national calamity. Together, they shed light on the sensibilities of late Ming intellectuals: their recollections of refined pleasures and ruminations on the vagaries of memory coexist with political engagement and a belief in bearing witness. With an introduction and extensive annotations, Plum Shadows and Plank Bridge is a valuable source for the literature of remembrance, the representation of women, and the social role of intellectuals during a tumultuous period in Chinese history.

She has created a book whose spirit this writer can borrow from, learn from. The music of her shakuhachi - the wind instrument she pitches in private - resounds on each page. When Carol Lem plays that ancient flute, we have no choice but to listen, entranced"- Gary Soto. "'How do I make my own life interesting and compelling to strangers?' is a question that should face every autobiographical poet. Carol Lem has managed to find an answer which is made up of her sharp powers of observation and her awareness of the poetic traditions that inform her poems"- Billy Collins.

Book excerpt: Thorn, an outlaw's son, wasn't supposed to be a slave. He's been sold to Tyburn, an executioner, and they're headed to Castle Gloom in Gehenna, the land of undead, where Thorn will probably be fed to a vampire. Lilith Shadow wasn't supposed to be ruler of Gehenna. But following the murder of her family, young Lily became the last surviving member of House Shadow, a long line of dark sorcerers. Her country is surrounded by enemies and the only way she can save it is by embracing her heritage and practicing the magic of the undead. But how can she when, as a girl, magic is forbidden to her? Just when it looks like Lily will have to leave her home forever, Thorn arrives at Castle Gloom. A sudden death brings them together, inspires them to break the rules, and leads them to soar to new heights in this fantasy with all the sparkle and luster of a starry night sky. Book 1 of a three book series. Advance Praise:"If you are pining for that thrill you felt when you first discovered Harry Potter, let me recommend Shadow Magic. Here is a fantasy world you will lose yourself in -- with Six Great Families of magic, the nicest princess of darkness you've ever met, a peasant boy with skills to rival Robin Hood, and a supporting cast of zombies, paladins, ghost puppies, executioners, minstrels, murderers, and a giant hero bat. I defy you not to love this story." -- Rick Riordan "Zestful, dynamic and addictive, Shadow Magic is storytelling at its most exuberant. Joshua Khan sweeps you up on the very first page and never lets you go. Close shaves, high adventure, wild fantasy, and giant bats -- this book has it all. I haven't had this much fun in ages. Sit back and enjoy the ride!" --Jonathan Stroud "Great, in-depth, unusual world-building coupled with funny, down-to-earth writing. Just call me Joshua Khan's number one fan."-Sarah Rees Brennan "There's plenty of magic to be found in Shadow Magic -- necromancy, giant bats, ghosts! -- but the real enchantment is the spell it weaves around the reader. I'd battle a whole army of the dead just to get to spend more time in Castle Gloom and the world Joshua Khan has created." -- Rachel Hawkins "An executioner's apprentice, an embattled queen of shadows, and a royal hostage join forces toward a common goal-survival in a treacherous world of monsters and magic. Shadow Magic is like the best of haunted house adventures-a dark and twisty thrill ride with just the right amount of creepy humor." -- Cinda Williams Chima "Working together but never losing sight of their individual objectives, Thorn and Lily uncover surprising truths about their families. Despite the gloomy setting, this book vibrates with hope. Short chapters filled with action, appealing characters, and cliff-hanger endings make this fantasy the kind of book readers will find hard to put down. Recommended for all middle grade collections." -- School Library Journal (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracts on the Modern Reformation of Korean Buddhism consists of four selected works by three writers: Han Yongun’s 韓龍雲 (1879–1944) Treatise on the Restoration of Korean Buddhism (1913) and “Reform Proposals for Korean Buddhism” (1931); Gwon Sangro’s 權相老(1879–1965) “Treatise on the Reformation of Korean Buddhism” (1912-1913); and Yi Yeongjae’s 李英宰(1900–1927) “Treatise on the Renovation of Korean Buddhism” (1922). These works represent modern Buddhist intellectuals’ awareness of social reality and their new visions at the contemporary turning point of modernization. The Treatise on the Restoration of Korean Buddhism emphasizes on superiority of Buddhism, which encompasses both philosophy and religion, and its modern features on the one hand, and argues for the elimination of past evils and a social renovation on the other. This work stresses the urgent necessity of the modern education, studying abroad, and the secured freedom of thought. In “Reform Proposals for Korean Buddhism,” Han advocates for the establishment of a unified institute, the necessity of translation into the Korean language using the Korean script (Han-geul), and the popularization of Buddhism. In “Treatise on the Reformation of Korean Buddhism,” Gwon insists that Korean Buddhism should overcome the old traditions of dependency or obedience as well as its exclusiveness and be radically reformed in the age of religious competition that is based on social evolution theory. The “Treatise on the Renovation of Korean Buddhism” suggests an institutional direction of Buddhist reformation with a critical awareness of the system under the Temple Ordinances issued by the Japanese Colonial Government. This work also proposes the establishment of a religious constitution and an innovative organization following a democratic model that pursues the separation of power. These works emphasize the necessity of socialization, education, institutional, and economical independence of Buddhism.

Book excerpt: Looking to get lucky? Stephanie Plum is back between-the-numbers and she's looking to get lucky in an Atlantic City hotel room, in a Winnebago, and with a brown-eyed stud who has stolen her heart. Stephanie Plum has a way of attracting danger, lunatics, oddballs, bad luck . . . and mystery men. And no one is more mysterious than the unmentionable Diesel. He's back and hot on the trail of a little man in green pants who's lost a giant bag of money. Problem is, the money isn't exactly lost. Stephanie's Grandma Mazur has found it, and like any good Jersey senior citizen, she's hightailed it in a Winnebago to Atlantic City and hit the slots. With Lula and Connie in tow, Stephanie attempts to bring Grandma home, but the luck of the Irish is rubbing off on everyone: Lula's found a job modeling plus-size lingerie. Connie's found a guy. Diesel's found Stephanie. And Stephanie has found herself in over her head with a caper involving thrice-stolen money, a racehorse, a car chase, and a bad case of hives. Plum Lucky is an all-you-can-eat buffet of thrills, chills, shrimp cocktail, plus-size underwear, and scorching hot men. It's a between-the-numbers treat no Evanovich fan will want to miss!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poignant tale about one woman’s quest to recover her family’s history, and a story of loss and survival during the Holocaust. Consie is home for a funeral when she stumbles upon a family letter sent from Germany in 1945, which contains staggering news: Consie’s great-uncle Hermann, who was transported to Auschwitz with his wife and three daughters, might have escaped. This seems improbable to Consie. Did people escape from Auschwitz? Could her great-uncle have been among them? What happened to Hermann? Did anyone know? These questions are at the root of Consie’s excavation of her family’s history as she seeks, seventy years after the liberation of Auschwitz, to discover what happened to Hermann. The Plum Trees follows Consie as she draws on oral testimonies, historical records, and more to construct a visceral account of the lives of Hermann, his wife, and their daughters from the happy days in prewar Czechoslovakia through their internment in Auschwitz and the end of World War II. The Plum Trees is a powerful, intimate reckoning with the past.

Book excerpt: In a world where beliefs are real, actualized by will, expressed by intent, Yip Chi Chuan, a young martial and spiritual ascetic, flees as the only home he has ever known, the ancient monastery of the Priests of K’un Lun, is destroyed by a newly ascendant extradimensional evil. Cast out and alone, Yip strikes out on a quest spanning the breadth of his home world of Ea’ae and into the greater macroverse beyond in an attempt to unseat an all-consuming Darkness rooted in his once vaunted Order’s distant past. Will Yip, the last of his kind to walk the wide world beyond his fallen sanctuary, succeed where his mighty brethren failed in Ages past? Unfortunately for Yip, the answer appears all too clear.... Without the guidance and teachings of his lineage, pursued by malevolent supernatural agents of the Cabal, unable to fully defend himself in a world steeped in magic, his own quest may fail before it ever begins. Unfazed by his own limitations, guided by his inner vision and direct experience of the energies of life, the radiant chi suffusing and enlivening the world all around, he is determined to triumph where others have faltered. To win forward, he will need help... but first he must survive. A blend of Eastern mysticism and Western fantasy, Shadow’s Rise is the first book of the Chronicles of the Fists, an epic trilogy recounting Yip’s adventures against all odds.
