Book excerpt: *This is the first book (novella-length) in The Darkling Chronicles series* At the age of four, Patrick Benjamin Solomon becomes Anka Rehmling’s human charge. By eight, he can SEE her. At thirteen, he breaks her heart, and by eighteen, she finds herself fighting for his life. As a darkling shadowcaster, Anka casts shadows in the human world, harnessing some of the earth’s UV light to bring back to Montenai—a world full of darklings, nymphs, satyrs, phantoms, and dragon lords. Her job is crucial to preserving the vitality and balance in her town of Shadowland. However, Anka has trouble following the strict rules set by the Shadowland Council, a ruling body comprised of three dragon lords. The lords’ decree states all shadowcasters will abide by the rules or face the penalty of harsh punishment, banishment, or death. Torn between her world and Ben's, Anka must choose to defy the Council or turn her back on love.

Book excerpt: "They are so lovely and wear the face of your loved ones, but more beautiful than you could ever imagine. Lovely things shouldn't draw you in and kill you. You almost want them to." Seventeen-year-old Blue Haven, gifted with superhuman sight since birth, dreams of becoming a warrior-not that anything's happened near the wall since Old Man Amos was attacked by that beaver. The Shadow Elves-humans infected by a zombie apocalypse-like plague-have died out over the past 150 years, leaving life altogether boring. In her quiet farming village nestled in the shadows of the Smoky Mountains, warriors are no more than a formality. But Blue's unique sight is beginning to show her some troubling things. A suspicious green-eyed outsider. A strikingly beautiful Shadow Elf. These visions can't be real-because if they are, that means everyone's been wrong. Dead wrong. They are not the last survivors in the world. And they aren't prepared for the reality Blue's eyes are showing her. The outsiders want in, and they're hungry.

Book Synopsis Blues & Gospel Records, 1890-1943 by : Robert M. W. Dixon
Download or read book Blues & Gospel Records, 1890-1943 written by Robert M. W. Dixon and published by Oxford [England] : Clarendon Press ; New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 1842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first edition, in 1964, Dixon and Godrich's Blues and Gospel Records has been dubbed 'the bible' for collectors of pre-war African-American music. It provides an exhaustive listing of all recordings made up to the end of 1943 in a distinctively African-American musical style, excluding those customarily classed as jazz (which are the subject of separate discographies). The book covers recordings made for the commercial market (whether issued at the time or not) and also recordings made for the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Song and similar bodies -- about 20,000titles in all, by more than 3,000 artists. For each recording session, full details are given of: artist credit, accompaniment, place and date of recording, titles, issuing company and catalogue numbers, matrix numbers and alternate takes. There are also short accounts of the major 'race labels',which recorded blues and gospel material, and a complete list of field trips to the south by travelling recording units. Howard Rye has joined the original compilers for this thoroughly revised fourth edition. The scope has been enlarged by the addition of about 150 new artists, in addition tonewly discovered recordings by other artists. Early cylinder recordings of gospel music, from the 1890s, are also included for the first time. Previous editions of this work were applauded for their completeness, accuracy, and reliability. This has now been enhanced by the addition of newinformation from record labels and from record company files, and by listening to a wide selection of titles, and detailed cross-checking.

Book Synopsis Blues for our light by : Kim Larsson
Download or read book Blues for our light written by Kim Larsson and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are lyrics that I wrote in my youth, in the 80's and 90's. I was part of the underground scene and travelled all over scandinavia. I wrote lyrics and played bass in Katarakt, The God, Nailgun Portrait and some psychadelic blues bands, but I have forgotten their names. This is, bascically, juvenilia. But some of these lyrics still work, I think. If you want to put music to my lyrics, please contact me. Contact information is on the backside of the book.
Book Synopsis Simple's Uncle Sam by : Langston Hughes
Download or read book Simple's Uncle Sam written by Langston Hughes and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Langston Hughes's most beloved character comes back to life in this extraordinary collection Langston Hughes is best known as a poet, but he was also a prolific writer of theater, autobiography, and fiction. None of his creations won the hearts and minds of his readers as did Jesse B. Semple, better known as "Simple." Simple speaks as an Everyman for African Americans in Uncle Sam's America. With great wit, he expounds on topics as varied as women, Gospel music, and sports heroes--but always keeps one foot planted in the realm of politics and race. In recent years, readers have been able to appreciate Simple's situational humor as well as his poignant questions about social injustice in The Best of Simple and The Return of Simple. Now they can, once again, enjoy the last of Hughes's original Simple books.

Book Synopsis Black Literature and Literary Theory by : Henry Louis Gates, Jr
Download or read book Black Literature and Literary Theory written by Henry Louis Gates, Jr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imaginative literature of African and Afro-American authors writing in Western languages has long been seen as standing outside the Western literary canon. In fact, however, black literature not only has a complex formal relation to that canon, but tends to revise and reflect Western rhetorical strategies even more than it echoes black vernacular literary forms. This book, first published in 1984, is divided into two sections, thus clarifying the nature of black literary theory on the one hand, and the features of black literary practice on the other. Rather than merely applying contemporary Western theory to black literature, these critics instead challenge and redefine the theory in order to make fresh, stimulating comments not only on black criticism and literature but also on the general state of criticism today.

She is incredibly generous with her ideas, and honors the integrity of all of her students by encouraging experimentation, tenacity, and compassion as they develop their own skills as artists." - Dr. Karen Carr, Humanities Professor, RISD "Deborah Forman's Color Theory course was inspiring, exciting and informative. She encouraged her students to push their experimentation with color to the limits which resulted in beautiful palettes that I never dreamed I could create.
