Book excerpt: This “oral autobiography” of Jimmy Page, the intensely private mastermind behind Led Zeppelin—one of the most enduring bands in rock history—is the most complete and revelatory portrait of the legendary guitarist ever published. More than 30 years after disbanding in 1980, Led Zeppelin continues to be celebrated for its artistic achievements, broad musical influence, and commercial success. The band's notorious exploits have been chronicled in bestselling books; yet none of the individual members of the band has penned a memoir nor cooperated to any degree with the press or a biographer. In Light & Shade, Jimmy Page, the band’s most reticent and inscrutable member, opens up to journalist Brad Tolinski, for the first time exploring his remarkable life and musical journey in great depth and intimate detail. Based on extensive interviews conducted with the guitarist/producer over the past 20 years, Light & Shade encompasses Page’s entire career, beginning with his early years as England’s top session guitarist when he worked with artists ranging from Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, and Burt Bacharach to the Kinks, The Who, and Eric Clapton. Page speaks frankly about his decadent yet immensely creative years in Led Zeppelin, his synergistic relationships with band members Robert Plant, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones, and his notable post-Zeppelin pursuits. While examining every major track recorded by Zeppelin, including “Stairway to Heaven,” “Whole Lotta Love,” and “Kashmir,” Page reflects on the band’s sensational tours, the filming of the concert movie The Song Remains the Same, his fascination with the occult, meeting Elvis Presley, and the making of the rock masterpiece Led Zeppelin IV, about which he offers a complete behind-the-scenes account. Additionally, the book is peppered with “sidebar” chapters that include conversations between Page and other guitar greats, including his childhood friend Jeff Beck and hipster icon Jack White. Through Page’s own words, Light and Shade presents an unprecedented first-person view of one of the most important musicians of our era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These twenty-five interviews with Joyce Carol Oates from early in her career to the present are the first such collection to be published. In these conversations from sources as diverse as major news magazines and small scholarly journals, Oates candidly talks about her work, her concepts of literature, her methods of writing, and many other topics. Throughout this anthology, Oates discusses how her writing paints a modern panorama of American life. Oates described her vast canvas to an interviewer: ""I could not take the time to write about a group of people who did not represent, in their various struggles, fantasies, unusual experiences, hopes, etc., our society in miniature."" She also comments upon her responsibility as an artist ""to bear witness"" to certain aspects of society. In this light, she responds to criticisms that violence seems to dominate her work by noting that ""one simply cannot know strengths unless suffering, misfortune, and violence are explored quite frankly by the writer.""In addition to discussing her works---from her first book By the North Gate (1963) to her most popular novel You Must Remember This (1987)---this prolific writer also answers questions about her writing habits. These interviews, spanning nineteen years, reveal a vivid portrait of Joyce Carol Oates writing as the conscience of society, as the creator of memorable prose and poetry, and as the artist deeply committed to a unique vision.

Book excerpt: From Pete Souza, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Obama: An Intimate Portrait, comes a potent commentary on the Presidency -- and our country. As Chief Official White House Photographer, Pete Souza spent more time alongside President Barack Obama than almost anyone else. His years photographing the President gave him an intimate behind-the-scenes view of the unique gravity of the Office of the Presidency -- and the tremendous responsibility that comes with it. Now, as a concerned citizen observing the Trump administration, he is standing up and speaking out. Shade is a portrait in Presidential contrasts, telling the tale of the Obama and Trump administrations through a series of visual juxtapositions. Here, more than one hundred of Souza's unforgettable images of President Obama deliver new power and meaning when framed by the tweets, news headlines, and quotes that defined the first 500 days of the Trump White House. What began with Souza's Instagram posts soon after President Trump's inauguration in January 2017 has become a potent commentary on the state of the Presidency, and our country. Some call this "throwing shade." Souza calls it telling the truth. In Shade, Souza's photographs are more than a rejoinder to the chaos, abuses of power, and destructive policies that now define our nation's highest office. They are a reminder of a President we could believe in, and a courageous defense of American values.

Tempest, trained in close combat, medium and long-range kills, and more than two martial disciplines, worked at the as dubbed Cave where she planned solo missions for herself and others. She was often invited into meetings for her ability to see solutions, even if a finagle was required to make it plausible. When she ran across some Raiders in the field and figured out someone was trying to sabotage their unit from the inside, she called a meeting to inform those necessary she was taking mission planning for the Raiders, and that she and her girls would take on that task for the special forces units for each branch. When she went to handpick her Raider team, her whole focus was caught when she saw a man who was continuing to fight despite obvious fatigue, his team the only one intact when the drill ended. Kim chose Matthew, a.k.a Marine Raider Gabriel, to lead her Raiders, and two weeks later the bug she would use to communicate with him went into his ear, and he was given a pen that transmitted pulses directly into hers. Fast forward ten years; the Alpha Angels had transitioned to civilian life as well as could be expected, forming the Alpha Sorority: Angels chapter, or ASAs. They built business and worked with charities to help their chosen hometown of Everywhere thrive, while covertly cleaning up the streets to make it a safe place for all in the community to call home. Kim opened Wordsmithing Inc. to assist others in putting thoughts on paper, and all was going exactly to plan. That was until she was told the company Matt worked for was buying one of the spaces she had had renovated, and that Matt was one of the leads assigned to Everywhere with Katy’s Raider Eric. Letting the Fates decide what would happen was an easy call for her because Matt only dated women who looked like they were delivered from skeletons-are-us, and she certainly didn’t fit that image. Kim spent her days at her businesses, was the chosen legal guardian for a teenager, and had almost managed to go to sleep once without vocally telling him goodnight so she assumed missing him had started to become manageable. But now that it was possible to meet him, she also understood Eric’s issued edict of no, the underlying message that she wasn’t good enough for Matt well understood. It had hurt, but she stayed in her corner, grateful the other ASAs got to spend time with him and were watching over him for her, if jealous. Given that, what exactly was an Angel supposed to do if, while getting her morning coffee at Temptations, he growled at her...

Many wrote about the conversations they had with the great Russian novelist. This volume gathers together 30 recollections of such conversations, all originally published in periodicals from 1887 through 1923. A brief introduction to each piece introduces the author of the narrative with concise biographical information, and a bibliographical note indicates the time and place of original publication.

Book excerpt: Chew on these one-of-a-kind conversation starters! Pass the salt? Eat your peas? You can do better than that! This book provides you with 365 ways to spark conversation and engage your youngsters while you gather around the table. Make dinnertime a lively experience the whole family looks forward to, as kids share their ideas, explore their creativity, and let you in on their wildest dreams with fun (and thought-provoking) questions like: If you could adopt a single trait from a wild animal, such as horns or a poisonous bite, what would it be? If you could invite any character from a book or movie to do something with you, who would you invite and what would you do? What would your life be like if you could be invisible? Studies show that kids who participate in regular family meals get better grades, have larger vocabularies, and are healthier than kids who don’t. So grab your fork--and your imagination--because it’s never too early to start a dynamic dinner routine!
