Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief provides readers with a comprehensive snapshot of contemporary research about autistics and their experiences and insights of sexual behaviours and interests. The authors use a scoping review approach to canvass the diverse literature on this topic. This approach shows many gaps in scholarly understanding about autistics and their experiences and insights of sexual interests and behaviours. Some of the gaps relate to sex education, gender dysphoria and gender reassignment surgery, pregnancy and childbirth, and domestic violence experiences of autistics. The book addresses these gaps and provides explanations and recommendations for further research.

Book excerpt: Children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) require specialized teaching strategies when learning about puberty, sexuality and relationships. This professional resource offers practical teaching advice geared towards the needs of young people on the autism spectrum. Beginning with information on good practice, policy, teaching methods and recent research, the book then divides into key sex education topics that assist professionals in developing their own individualized and developmentally appropriate curricula. Covering issues of gender, public and private, puberty, hygiene, emotions, sex and more, each topic provides an overview of the difficulties that children with autism might experience, discussion and activity ideas and photocopiable resources including instructional stories, checklists and illustrations. The final section demonstrates how to respond to ongoing patterns of inappropriate behaviour and put together a behaviour plan. Aiming to explain and support the child's developing sexuality while also addressing crucial issues of safety, this book is a much-needed teaching manual for all professionals working with children and young adults with autism including educators in mainstream and special education, psychologists, therapists and social workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state of society presents an alarming prospect for those with autism: - low quality of life when it comes to health - a high risk of becoming a victim of bullying, exploitation, and/or violence - an increased risk for physical and psychological illnesses - a significantly increased risk of dying early - increased risk of suicide And, particularly when it comes to sexuality and relationships: - a high risk of becoming a victim of physical or sexual abuse If we wish to help those with autism achieve successful and healthy relationships and sexuality, society needs to undergo a fundamental change. To succeed, we need a new socio-psychological/dynamic developmental view of autism that takes both society and culture into account. This book explores why this has not yet happened, and what exactly needs to change: the specific, concrete, practical approaches we can take to improving the lives of those with autism.

In her new book, she draws upon her own experience to examine the implications of being autistic on relationships, sex and sexuality. Having discussed subjects such as basic sex education and autism, the author goes further to explore the wider issues of interpersonal relationships, same sex attraction, bisexuality and transgender issues. She also examines the unspoken rules that exist between people in relationships and explains why these rules can be difficult and confusing for people with autism. This book will give courage and information to adults with autism or Asperger Syndrome and provide essential insights to those living and working with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual health and sexuality can be difficult subjects for parents and caregivers to broach with autistic children, made more challenging when children are at the severe end of the autism spectrum. Some parents may even question the validity of teaching sexuality to those who are severely autistic. This practical handbook guides you through the process of teaching about sex and sexuality, answering all of the most crucial questions, including: Why is it necessary to teach this subject to my severely autistic child? When is the right time to start talking about these issues? How detailed and explicit should I be? What methods are most appropriate? It addresses male and female issues separately and covers public and private sexual behaviours, sexual abuse, cross-gender teaching and liaising with school, in addition to the more obvious areas such as physical changes and menstruation. This will be the ideal guide to teaching about sexual issues for any parent, caregiver or health educator caring for a person on the severe end of the autism spectrum.

Book excerpt: Approximately 1 in 68 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder [ASD], with the diagnosis being four to five times more common among boys than girls (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls). Youth diagnosed with ASD desire social and romantic relationships, although they lack the appropriate skills and knowledge to initiate those relationships. The aim of this review was to establish factors that contribute to the difficulties and successes in maintaining relationships among ASD youth. A systematic review of the literature was conducted, and ten articles were retained for inclusion. Findings suggested that individuals with ASD desire social and romantic relationships, although they lack the appropriate skills and knowledge to initiate those relationships. It is concluded that youth diagnosed with ASD should be viewed for their strengths and positive attributes (e.g., engaged, friendly, warm, and approachable), which may contribute to friendship formation. With respect to sexuality, the majority of high-functioning adolescents with ASD express sexual interest and display a variety of sexual behaviors. In order to achieve the greatest treatment benefit regarding forming social/romantic relationships, emphasis must be placed on areas within ABA and EIBI that have the most profound and immediate impact on quality of life and activities of daily living.

Book excerpt: The author's opinion that the statement sexual behavior is social behavior is one-hundred percent accurate but there is more to the story than just that. Think of social behavior as a wide spectrum of things, much like the autism spectrum. The further right you move on that autism spectrum the higher "functioning" some people say you are. The author says that functioning labels are damaging to the autism community, but we use them for the purpose of explaining our behavior. There is no operational definition that would tell us at which step a social behavior becomes a sexual behavior. The number of step that this occurs at will vary from relationship to relationship or person to person. I struggle with this concept because I fail to understand how I can be two people at once. I have this mind blindness problem of perceiving my behavior as who I am. This comes from a result of lots of bullying over the years that created a lot of post-traumatic stress disorder. I often jump to sexual behavior at step two because I am trying to get a girlfriend. There is nothing preprogrammed to be inside of my brain. This means that I struggle with coming on too strong in social interactions. The set of social skills needed to interact with an acquaintance are social behavior skills and non-sexual. The social skills are sexual in nature and therefore sexual behaviors.
