Book Synopsis Spirits, Sugar, Water, Bitters by : Derek Brown
Download or read book Spirits, Sugar, Water, Bitters written by Derek Brown and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the cocktail --"the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet," according to H.L. Mencken --featuring 45 recipes for rediscovered classics and inspired originals. A cocktail-- the fascinating alchemy of simple alcohols into complex potables-- is an invention as unlikely as it is delicious, and an American innovation whose history marches in step with that of the Republic. In Spirits Sugar Water Bitters, nationally recognized bartender and spirits expert Derek Brown tells the story of the cocktail's birth, rise, fall, and eventual resurrection, tracing the contours of the American story itself. In this spirited timeline, Brown shows how events such as the Whiskey Rebellion, Prohibition, and the entry of Hawaii into the United States shaped the nation's drinking habits. Brown also tells the stories of the great men and women who made their mark on cocktail culture, including America's Distiller-In-Chief George Washington and modern-day King Cocktail Dale DeGroff, as well as lesser-known mixology heroes like Martha Niblo, the nineteenth-century New York proprietress famous for her Sherry Cobblers, and Frederic Tudor, whose ice-shipping business gave early drinks like the Cobbler and the Mint Julep the chill they needed. Featuring classic and original recipes inspired by each period, this book serves up the perfect mix of geography, history, culture, and taste.

Book Synopsis L.A. Cops: A Story of Honor, Sex & Tragedy by : Samuel Turner
Download or read book L.A. Cops: A Story of Honor, Sex & Tragedy written by Samuel Turner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L.A. Cops is primarily a work of fiction; with a few exceptions, the names of my characters as well as most of the cities and counties in the San Joaquin Valley are figments of my imagination. If the reader believes that I have written about actual places, as well as real crimes, that is his right to do so. I can only say in my defense that all writers have stored in their memory-cells recollections of actual events, and frequently borrow from those storage banks ideas that eventually go together to make up a story, or even an entire novel. That’s how writers of fiction make a living; unless the work is pure science-fiction, the more closely it resembles real-life situations, the more likely it will sell, because we all experience something inside when we can relate to the characters, events, or locales in a story. I have used real situations—and in several instances—actual places in the chapters that deal with World War II. Of course, built within that framework, I’ve taken the liberty to make my characters more colorful, gallant, or tyrannical than may have been the actual case. I wasn’t old enough during that period to have had personal experiences of this nature, but some of the military individuals I’ve introduced you to may approximately match some that I ran into during my own years in the Air Force. After all, no one period in time has its own special hold on good, decent people, nor on those who have made life less than great for those they have come in contact with. You will find both types playing important roles in my book.

Download or read book Paradoxes written by Antonio Almas and published by Babelcube Inc.. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do we go when we don't know which path to take? Why do pains intertwine with the skin and wounds open with our own fingers? What lessons do we learn and which ones do we refuse to learn? There is a universal duality that always presents us with choices and many contradictions. This paradoxical way of being divides us between being or not being, doing or not doing, accepting or rejecting who we truly are. The texts I present here express joy and sadness, the exaltation of pleasure and discontent. It's all a paradox, as the one who feels oscillates from the mountaintop to the depths of the ocean in mood swings and misguided decisions, making both right choices and mere illusions to sustain life. This rollercoaster ride is what makes life what it is, a choice between common sense and the complete alternative of opposing what is commonly agreed upon, living in these paradoxes.
