Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers a new theology of desire and delight based on the Christian hope for bodily resurrection. This work is part of a growing chorus of theological voices raised in support of erotic desire. Although most theologians have concluded that there will be no experience of sexual desire and delight in the world to come, Patricia Beattie Jung critically examines the historical traditions and biblical rationales for this teaching. She defends an alternative claim that there will be a healed and glorified experience of sex in heaven based on a compelling account of the Christian hope for bodily resurrection. The first half of the work focuses on Christian foundations for the notion of sex in heaven, while the second goes on to discuss some of the implications of those convictions for sex on earth. Jung concludes with discussions of how best to nurture sexual delight on earth and how and why internet pornography fails in that regard. “The book provides a valuable, alternative reading of Christian eschatological thinking about resurrected bodies and a sensitive, refreshing, and candid discussion about sexual delight.” — Adrian Thatcher, author of God, Sex, and Gender: An Introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1956, this survey of the interpretations of sex by the major figures in Christian thought and in psychoanalysis made an important contribution to the re-thinking of our sexual morality at the time. The author refutes the common belief that the negative attitude toward sex and the body, which had been predominant in western civilization, originated with Christianity. He shows that such a viewpoint was widespread in the early Hellenism Age, nearly three centuries before Christ. He emphasizes the essentially positive view which Biblical religion demands and shows how Christianity’s attitude early became corrupted by the dualism of the Orient. He points to the need for a return to essential naturalism and the Biblical interpretation of sex. The first part of the book consists of a historical treatment in the Christian tradition, touching upon the teaching of Jesus, Paul, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin and others. He analyses the classical and contemporary attitudes and ideas in both Catholic and Protestant circles and shows how Christian understanding comes into conflict with psychoanalysis. In the later portions of the book the author discusses sex and psychoanalysis and the major problems in sexual mores. He ends with a synthesis of the religious and psychoanalytic points of view and a critical reconstruction of a Christian interpretation.

Book excerpt: Edward Carpenters's Love's Coming of Age is one of the most famous works discussing love and marriage from a modern, enlightened point of view. The book was first published thirty years or so ago, in England, after being turned down by several London publishers before it finally found a market when Carpenter risked the publication of it himself. So immediate was the success of the work that it was rapidly translated into many European languages. The present edition of Love's Coming of Age is complete, including all the latest additions and changes made by the author. It will be found to be one of the most straightforward and at the same time delicate discussions of sexual problems that has ever been published. -- Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recovers the curious history of the "insensible" in the Age of Sensibility. Tracking this figure through the English novel's uneven and messy past, Wendy Anne Lee draws on Enlightenment theories of the passions to place philosophy back into conversation with narrative. Contemporary critical theory often simplifies or disregards earlier accounts of emotions, while eighteenth-century studies has focused on cultural histories of sympathy. In launching a more philosophical inquiry about what emotions are, Failures of Feeling corrects for both of these oversights. Proposing a fresh take on emotions in the history of the novel, its chapters open up literary history's most provocative cases of unfeeling, from the iconic scrivener who would prefer not to and the reviled stock figure of the prude, to the heroic rape survivor, the burnt-out man-of-feeling, and the hard-hearted Jane Austen herself. These pivotal cases of insensibility illustrate a new theory of mind and of the novel predicated on an essential paradox: the very phenomenon that would appear to halt feeling and plot actually compels them. Contrary to the assumption that fictional investment relies on a richness of interior life, Lee shows instead that nothing incites the passions like dispassion.

Leonie Blackwell explores ten injustices that can occur in our childhood, our adulthood or throughout our lives as recurring themes. They are often the events we spend a lifetime trying to make sense of. The lessons of injustice come to us in three wayshow we treat others, how others treat us and how we treat ourselves. Regardless of the source of the experience, the goal is to embark on the journey of transformation and empowerment. The injustices serve as a terrific checklist for those who have done much inner work and may need to tweak here and there or as beautiful stepping stones to line up as you commence your journey of deep reflection. Either way they allow us to see ourselves less as victims and more as students of life with lessons we havent learnt yet. Allison Ross, workshop participant
