Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods of Sewage Disposal: For Towns, Public Institutions and Isolated Houses In the preparation of this book, it has been attempted to bring into convenient form, and within moderate limits, the more important results of the study and experience of many engineers, chemists, and biologists who have within the past quarter of a century exploited the various methods of sewage disposal. These results are set forth in a voluminous literature, and are clouded with much speculation and conflicting testimony. It would not have been possible, even five years ago, to state with certainty some controlling principles which are now firmly established, and which are supported by the most successful practice of the past. That practice was based on empirical knowledge, and was the outgrowth of tentative effort. Little by little, it has been justified, elucidated, and corrected by scientific investigation, - notably at the hands of Schloessing, Frankland, Warington, and the corps of able men who have conducted the experiments of the Massachusetts Board of Health at Lawrence. These experiments were more complete than any that preceded them, and their outcome has been more practically conclusive: they must be of world-wide good effect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Operation of Sewage Disposal Plants: A Manual for the Practical Management of Sewage Disposal Works, With Suggestions as to Improvements in Design and Construction He must be able to tell when his tanks are beginning to let over an undue amount of suspended matter, indicat ing that a removal of stored up Sludge is desirable or necessary. He must know when his various forms of feed or dosing apparatus are working properly, and how to make proper adjustments as soon as a siphon or other apparatus gets out of order. In one of his rounds the writer discovered a suspicious appearance at the outlet of one of four contact beds. The attendant assured him that each bed was working perfectly as he had been at the plant daily for weeks. Upon close investigation the writer found that the discharge Siphon in the bed noted was out of order so that at every round this bed did not hold but allowed the dose to run right through without any purification. This had been going on for weeks, almost undoing the work of the other three beds, which were'turning out a good effluent, and the attendant was none the wiser. In order to get the highest efficiency from our sewage disposal plants as they now exist, the attendants must be taught the necessary fundamentals or be displaced by specially trained men. Many a plant when new does not appear to require skilled attention because it is usu ally of such a Size that a future growth of the town for which it was built has been provided for and, therefore, the duty imposed upon the treatment units is compara tively light. The final effluent of such a plant is usually excellent, although in many cases the writer has seen this produced almost wholly by the final sand filters be: cause the preliminary treatment units or the contact beds had not been operated so as to perform their share of the work. Sooner or later such a plant becomes more heavily loaded and then trouble begins and corrective measures are oftentimes costly. Book Synopsis The Disposal of Sewage by : Paul Gerhard
Download or read book The Disposal of Sewage written by Paul Gerhard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Disposal of Sewage: Of Isolated Country Houses The latter can be applied with a mechanism similar to the one used in earth closets, and it is claimed that only about one-fourth the quantity will be needed. As charcoal is rather expensive this is an important consideration. Some also claim that removal need not be so frequent in the case of charcoal closets, but this is, at best, a doubt ful advantage. In cottages, or suburban residences of somewhat more pretension, the earth closet is sometimes located, for conveniences sake, in an ex tension of the cottage, and it then usually becomes desirable to have also a somewhat more convenient method of disposal of the slop water, which would avoid exposure of the housewife or servant to the inclemencies of the weather. This may be secured by arranging a properly ventilated and trapped waste-plpe - a pipe two inches diame ter is plenty large enough - to carry the waste from the kitchen sink, the laundry tub, and wherever this is provided for, from the bathtub, into a small receiving tank, located outside of the house, and placed below the depth to which frost usually penetrates. This tank may be a plain wooden box, or an earthen or iron tank, or finally a tank built of brickwork. It may be emptied in the plainest kind of an arrangement by hand, or else it may be discharged by an automatic device, such as a siphon, a tumbler tank, or other mechanical appliance. It may become useful, even in the case of small houses, to build some sort of a grease trap to prevent the grease from being discharged and finally clogging the small absorption pipes. It is, of course, assumed that the general topography of the lot is' favorable to such an arrangement, in other words, that there is not a s10pe from the garden, or absorption field, toward the house, in which case disposal by gravity becomes impossible. If the earth closet is placed inside of a dwelling the same precautions should be observed which are taken in the case of water-closets. The ventilation of the apartment is an important matter, and should receive careful attention. As a rule, it is better to locate an earth closet in an isolated or detached part of the cottage. While an earth closet is inferior to the best water-closet, I have no hesitation in pronouncing it, if well taken care of, superior to many water-closets as usually arranged and kept. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitary Apparatus for the Disposal of Excreta and Sewage From Private Residence and Isolated Houses Under the most primitive conditions excreta] matter is deposited directly upon the earth or possibly in streams. A slight advance in this condition is found in the common privy, with its accompanying vault or pit for the collection of excreta. This is without doubt a most objec tionable contrivance. Quantities of decomposing and noxious human excreta are stored up in a more or less porous pit, or even in a mass directly on the surface of the ground, freely exposed to the'distributing agency of flies and possibly some of the higher animals. The liquids leach into the sur rounding soil, and if the solid matter is removed at inter vals, the handling causes a fresh menace to health. Download or read book Sewage Disposal (Classic Reprint) written by George A. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Disposal There appears to be no room for doubt but that the treatment of sewage on intermittent sand filters will, in the vast majority of instances, yield the highest degree of purification of all the known methods of sewage treatment. In England the natural soil is not uniformly favor able to this form of treatment, and except in the northern and eastern sections, the same is true in this country. It has become necessary, therefore, to pay particular attention to the perfection of numerous forms of preparatory treatment, whereby higher rates are made possible in the case of intermittent sand filtration, and other subsidiary processes, there by reducing the cost of the plant by reducing the acreage required. It has also become necessary to study more carefully the applicability of certain of the more recently devised methods of sewage treatment, where in coarse-grain material, Such as is locally available, can be made use of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clarification of Sewage IN Germany, presumably because Of local conditions, devices and processes for the clarification Of sewage have been much more highly developed than in this country. Many of the rivers are large and the modification Of the Sewage to a nonjputrescible state is quite frequently unnecessary. On this account there are many plants in Germany where screening devices and tanks Of various kinds constitute the entire equipment of a sewage treat ment plant. Book Synopsis Sewage Disposal in the United States (Classic Reprint) by : Geo W. Rafter
Download or read book Sewage Disposal in the United States (Classic Reprint) written by Geo W. Rafter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Disposal in the United States Questions of River Pollution and Sewage Disposal have assumed so much importance in this country that no excuse is necessary for putting forth an American treatise on the subject. The chief object, therefore, of this book is to specifically call the attention of sanitary authorities, engineers, and others interested in questions of public sanitation, to the fact that we have already accumulated a considerable stock of experience in sewage disposal in this country, and that for the future Americans, who wish to study the subject in detail, will not be obliged, as until recently was the case, to go abroad for the purpose. In making this remark we do not wish to be understood as discouraging the study of foreign precedents in sewage disposal; on the contrary, it is cheerfully conceded, inasmuch as the necessity for sewage purification first arose abroad, that consequently the foreign engineers had the opportunity to attack the problem first, and we may very properly profit by their experience. The full idea is that the conditions here are generally quite dissimilar from those obtaining abroad, and that, with most of the feasible methods of sewage purification now in successful operation, the chances are decidedly in favor of quite as much profit from studying carefully the results obtained here as can be expected from the casual examination of executed projects abroad, which, after all, are for the most part only relatively applicable. The experience at Worcester, Massachusetts, is a striking exemplification of the truth that in the end the American engineer must design works to suit his specific case. In the preliminary discussion at Worcester it was nearly universally assumed that, by reason of an identity of climatic conditions between Worcester and Danzig, the sewage irrigation fields of the latter city might be duplicated at Worcester, and results obtained quite as successful as those attending sewage farming at Danzig. Rut Mr. Allen took the ground that the climatic conditions were sufficiently dissimilar to render an extensive sewage farm at Worcester an experiment, relative to which it was impossible to predicate success from what had occurred at Danzig.
