Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry Gordon provides thought-provoking tales about life, love, joy, grief, compassion, and kindness. He writes with intrigue and humor. His stories take you from a sacrificial mayfly, surfing an eddy in the waters of a trout stream, to a pantheon ballroom in the cosmos where Jupiter and Saturn dance cheek to cheek. From two matches burning bright in the chilly night sky of the Los Angeles Coliseum to the twin peaks of Granite Mountain in Arizona and Mount Sinai halfway around the world. Each story is anchored with God's whisper--his word engraved in love. Each chapter begins with a new day. And with each dawn begins another moment of truth--a time for joy, a time for sorrow, but most of all, a time to care! The Seventh Sunrise is chock-full of wisdom hidden in the most obscure of places. And within each concealed spot is a sanctuary cloaked with God's fingerprints.

Book excerpt: "Even at the age of seven, in the Australian outback, Maia knew she was different. But it will take her many years to find out why, to discover that her story begins in the past, embraces four continents and spans three generations. In England in the 1920s, three women are forced to live a lie. In the years to come, the lives of these women will touch - but never merge. Yet in Egypt, an ancient guide called Mahthum will lead them towards a destiny that the next two generations will fulfil - a destiny that will end with Maia."--Cover.

Book excerpt: A bold argument that “and” always means “&,” the truth-functional sentential connective. In this book, Barry Schein argues that “and” is always the sentential logical connective with the same, one, meaning. “And” always means “&,” across the varied constructions in which it is tokened in natural language. Schein examines the constructions that challenge his thesis, and shows that the objections disappear when these constructions are translated into Eventish, a neo-Davidsonian event semantics, and, enlarged with Cinerama Semantics, a vocabulary for spatial orientation and navigation. Besides rescuing “and” from ambiguity, Eventish and Cinerama Semantics solve general puzzles of grammar and meaning unrelated to conjunction, revealing the book's central thesis in the process: aspects of meaning mistakenly attributed to “and” are discovered to reflect neighboring structures previously unseen and unacknowledged. Schein argues that Eventish and Cinerama Semantics offer a fundamental revision to clause structure and what aspects of meaning are represented therein. Eventish is distinguished by four features: supermonadicity, which enlarges verbal decomposition so that every argument relates to its own event; descriptive event anaphora, which replaces simple event variables with silent descriptive pronouns; adverbialization, which interposes adverbials derived from the descriptive content of every DP; and AdrPs, which replace all NPs with Address Phrases that locate what nominals denote within scenes or frames of reference. With 'And,' Schein rehabilitates an old rule of transformational, generative grammar, answering the challenges to it exhaustively and meticulously.

It covers topics ranging from the physics and aesthetics of sound, the nature of music, its place in the total scheme of things and in human life, the relation between music, astronomy, astrology and meteorology, the relation between music and human feelings character and behaviour, to the question of whether a good Muslim should be allowed to listen to music at all, and if so, to which type. The book traces the influence of Greek, in particular Pythagorean and Aristoxenian, thinking in Islam on this subject, and aims to provide a philosophically coherent statement of thinking of the Islamic writers concerned, a clarification of their central arguments, as well as a critical evaluation of their line of thought. The author introduces a wide range of material from manuscript sources, including much that has not been published before.

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise is Dan Gemeinhart’s finest book yet — and that’s saying something. Your heart needs this joyful miracle of a book." — Katherine Applegate, acclaimed author of The One and Only Ivan and Wishtree Five years. That's how long Coyote and her dad, Rodeo, have lived on the road in an old school bus, criss-crossing the nation. It's also how long ago Coyote lost her mom and two sisters in a car crash. Coyote hasn’t been home in all that time, but when she learns that the park in her old neighborhood is being demolished—the very same park where she, her mom, and her sisters buried a treasured memory box—she devises an elaborate plan to get her dad to drive 3,600 miles back to Washington state in four days...without him realizing it. Along the way, they'll pick up a strange crew of misfit travelers. Lester has a lady love to meet. Salvador and his mom are looking to start over. Val needs a safe place to be herself. And then there's Gladys... Over the course of thousands of miles, Coyote will learn that going home can sometimes be the hardest journey of all...but that with friends by her side, she just might be able to turn her “once upon a time” into a “happily ever after.”

Book excerpt: "The Greek magical papyri" is a collection of magical spells and formulas, hymns, and rituals from Greco-Roman Egypt, dating from the second century B.C. to the fifth century A.D. Containing a fresh translation of the Greek papyri, as well as Coptic and Demotic texts, this new translation has been brought up to date and is now the most comprehensive collection of this literature, and the first ever in English. The Greek Magical Papyri in Transition is an invaluable resource for scholars in a wide variety of fields, from the history of religions to the classical languages and literatures, and it will fascinate those with a general interest in the occult and the history of magic. "One of the major achievements of classical and related scholarship over the last decade."—Ioan P. Culianu, Journal for the Study of Judaism "The enormous value of this new volume lies in the fact that these texts will now be available to a much wider audience of readers, including historians or religion, anthropologists, and psychologists."—John G. Gager, Journal of Religion "[This book] shows care, skill and zest. . . . Any worker in the field will welcome this sterling performance."—Peter Parsons, Times Literary Supplement

Book excerpt: Tales of the Soil is a collection of spiritual and inspirational allegories that challenge the concept of existence. The book invites each reader to become The Meadow and every creature that calls it home. Venture through time as a dandelion. Experience love, compassion, aging, and learning through the eyes of the butterfly. Explore growth, understanding, and change, as would a droplet of dew. "I viewed, through the magical eyes of this author, a wondrous tale of what is all about us and yet unseen. The writing is powerful, evoking images that brought tears as I read, echoing truths that resonated deeply. The ordinary so transformed, that I could neither read it aloud without my voice breaking, nor read it through dry eyes. This is a spiritual journey, in the story style of the ancient medicine men of native cultures, which touches the Great Spirit in us all. Discover the world above, below and within this special Meadow as the stories are painted through your minds eye upon the palette of your imagination. I don''t know how she does this, but I''m grateful that she does. ~ Daniel Cohen Ph.D., Retired Executive Director New York Testing and Guidance Center, Assistant Professor, Educational and Developmental Psychology Pace University, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Educational Psychology Brooklyn College, Dean of Students, NYC Bd. of Education, Fellow Royal Society of Health (Eng.)
