Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to using walking to heal emotional trauma and bring forth optimal mental functioning • Explores why and how we carry emotional wounds, and how they can be healed and resolved • Shows how walking stimulates both sides of the brain to promote and restore mental health • Provides simple, yet potent, mental exercises to use while walking Our bodies usually heal rapidly from an illness, injury, or wound. Yet our minds and hearts often suffer for years with debilitating symptoms of distress or upset. Why is it so hard for our minds and hearts to heal? The key to healing them is simple and can be just a short walk away. Walking--a bilateral therapy that has been a part of human life throughout history--allows people to heal emotionally as quickly as they do physically. Bilateral therapies engage both sides of the brain and unlock natural states of optimal function and creativity. Thom Hartmann examines how memory works and why emotional shock can resist normal healing. He found that the simple act of walking is effective in treating emotional disturbances ranging from temporary upsets and problems to chronic conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Case studies have shown dramatic results. Walking consciously, while holding a distress or desire in mind, can rapidly dissolve the rigidity of a traumatic memory or negative mind state, dispersing its unpleasant associations in as little as a half hour’s time. While walking has always been a natural part of life, its importance in promoting and maintaining mental health is only recently being rediscovered. Hartmann’s simple yet potent exercises allow us to create our own walking journeys to restore our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being as well as rejuvenate our body’s health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'A donkey?' blurted my family as one. For a moment it didn't seem they'd ever be able to list all the reasons that made this so entertainingly ludicrous. . . .Yes, I'd never ridden a donkey on a beach or petted one at a city farm, never even pinned a cardboard tail to one's throat after the cake and ice cream....A donkey would be my hairy-coated hair shirt, making my pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela a truer test of the will, a trial." With these words, having no knowledge of Spanish and even less about the care and feeding of donkeys, Tim Moore, Britain's indefatigable traveling Everyman, sets out on a pilgrimage to the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela with a donkey named Shinto as his companion. Armed only with the Codex Calixtinus, a twelfth-century handbook to the route, and expert advice on donkey management from Robert Louis Stevenson, Moore and his four-legged companion travel the ancient five-hundred-mile route from St. Jean Pied-de-Port, on the French side of the Pyrenees, to the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, which houses the remains of Spain's patron saint, St. James. Over sun-scorched highways, precipitous bridges, dirt paths shaded by leafy trees, and vineyards occasionally lashed by downpours, Moore and Shinto pass through some of the oldest towns and cities in northern Spain in colorful company, both past and present. Pilgrims real and imagined have traveled this route throughout the ages, a diverse cast of wayfarers spanning Charlemagne, St. Francis of Assisi, Chaucer's Wife of Bath, and New Age diva, Shirley MacLaine. Moore's present-day companions are no less florid or poignant. Clearly more interested in Shinto than in Moore, their fellow walkers are an assortment of devout Christian pilgrims, New Age spirituality seekers, travelers grieving over a lost love affair, Baby Boomers contemplating the advent of middle age, and John Q. Public just out for a cheap, boozy sun-drenched outdoor holiday. As Moore pushes, pulls, wheedles, cajoles, and threatens Shinto across Spain toward the crypt of St. James in a quest to find the spiritual pilgrim within, the duo overnights in the bedrooms, dormitories, and---for Shinto---adjacent grassy fields of northern Spain's hostels, inns, convents, seminaries, and farmhouses. Shinto, a donkey with a finely honed talent for relieving himself at the most inopportune moments, has better luck in the search for his next meal than Moore does in finding his inner St. Francis. Undaunted, however, Man and Beast finally arrive at the cathedral and a successful end to their journey. For readers who delighted in his earlier books, Travels with My Donkey is the next hilarious chapter in the travels of Tim Moore, a book that keeps the bones of St. James rattling till this day.

Book excerpt: Meet Chris Stewart, the eternal optimist. A man who flies to Spain, sees a peasant farm on the wrong side of the river and, with scarcely a second thought, hands over a cash deposit. And then finds he has acquired not just the farm, but the farmer, too, who has no intention of leaving. Not to mention the lack of running water, electricity or even a bridge. It would be enough to send most people straight back home. But Chris and his wife Ana are made of stronger stuff - and besides, they have sunk all their savings into their farm, El Valero, and buying a flock of sheep. So there is no turning back. Life gets tough, but it also gets good. Driving Over Lemons is that rare thing - a funny, insightful book that charms you from the first sun-lit page to the last. And one that makes running an Andalucian mountain farm seem like a half-decent career move. It has been a major bestseller both in Britain and Spain.

Book excerpt: Kurt Koontz thought he was well prepared for his 490-mile walking trip on the historic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain. He was fit and strong. He had a good guidebook and all the right equipment. His pilgrim passport would grant him access to the shelter of hostels along the way. But all that, however helpful, did not begin to encompass the grandeur of his external or internal adventure. A Million Steps climbs over the high meadows of the Pyrenees, quests through the unceasing wind of the Meseta, and dances in the rains of Galicia. While following the yellow arrows that mark the route, Koontz also navigates through his personal history of addiction, recovery, and love. With outgoing humor and friendliness, he embraces the beauty of the countryside and joyful connections to other pilgrims from around the world. Part diary, part travelogue, A Million Steps is a journey within a journey all the way to the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am Tex Lang and I walked portions of the Camino Frances in September and October 2018 and again in March and April, 2019. This is an update of my first book Camino de Santiago Journey 2019 which I published in December of 2018. In this updated version I have added more tips and hints plus information relating to Covid-19 and the upcoming Holy Year of 2021.I was like most pilgrims who have not walked The Way in that I knew very little about this big undertaking. Oh sure, I researched like crazy on the web to get information. I shopped for clothing and everything else that might have been on this person's or that person's list. And I made a few mistakes. Now that I have 'been there' I know how I will do it differently in the future. And that information is what I bring to my readers plus many tips I learned on the ground in Spain. The hints I offer in this book are universal but my travel perspective is limited to the Camino Frances. I returned to the Camino in March of 2019 for a few more weeks and learned several more helpful tips.In this book you will learn What to take and what to leave behind. This will help keep what is in your backpack to a minimum. How to manage your money with options for a credit card or prepaid debit card and getting cash when you need it in Spain. Exact examples of clothing I took which worked perfectly for me and what did not, including shoes. I tried out six pair before making a selection and still did not have the right shoes. Next time it will be different. How to select your accommodations and insure there is a place for you at the end of the day. How to save time and money arranging for cell phone service in Spain. Which plan was the best for me and how you can find it. The best apps to have on your smartphone for planning your day to day, keeping track of the weather and even knowing that you are still on the trail!Which guidebooks are best and how to take them with you in your phone saving space and weight in your backpack. What to expect in your day to day Camino experience. This will raise your confidence about your ability to do this! What I learned from my own mistakes and those of others. I did not have a bad experience the first time. Far from it! It was wonderful! But I struggled because of unexpected physical difficulties and had to cut my Camino short. I am 74 years old as of this writing and am a 7-year lung cancer survivor. I have other physical challenges including sciatica, feet issues, hip problems, COPD and emphysema. With this in mind I have included in the book a section for older people considering the Camino and those who have a physical challenge of some sort. You will get the story of how things evolved for me and what steps I am taking to minimize the problems in the future. And, you will get to meet Millie, a 70+ yr. old retired school teacher from Maryland who completed the Camino. I will tell you what I learned from this tiny lady and how she inspired me for my future undertakings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was born from the idea of providing useful advice and suggestions to those who are about to embark on the Camino de Santiago for the first time. I walked them all: in 2006 the Camino Francés, from St. Jean Pied-de-Port to Fisterra, in 2008 the Via de la Plata from Seville, in 2010, the Jacobean holy year, the Camino Primitivo from Oviedo and the stage from Fisterra to Muxía, in 2012 the Camino del Norte. I put the figures in a column, I try to add them. Three thousand kilometers, exactly, on foot. I got some information from the Internet, I checked it by comparing it with my personal experience, I tried to provide a complete and updated report. In this book you will find: - a historical-religious introduction on the figure of St. James and the origin of the pilgrimage; - an overview of the routes to Santiago today; - detailed advice on which Way to choose and how far to go per day; - a small glossary of the most frequent terms: albergue, botafumeiro, Compostela, credential, donativo, sello, ...; - how to prepare for the Way: how much to train and how, where to find information, the most up-to-date websites and the best apps, how to book the flight, what are the average daily costs; - which shoes to use; - how to prepare the backpack: what things are necessary and what are superfluous; - the symbols and rituals along the Way, in Santiago and in Fisterra; - the new ways of accessing the Portico of Glory, after a decade of delicate restorations. From time to time, I inserted short passages taken from the diaries I wrote, to give the sense of the pilgrimage, the scent of encounters, the flavor of the extraordinary emotions experienced. Enjoy the reading and buen camino!

For readers who are considering it, this book will be a help to make an informed decision and then plan it well.To do the Camino is to walk, nothing more. Walking is not running or climbing, but neither is it strolling at the mall. This guide is based on my experience of having completed the Camino from Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela walking about 500 miles in 35 days, and having finished better than I was at the beginning. Buen Camino ! About the author Juan Martín-García is Spanish, 60 years old, author a recognized book over the History of Spain. He has done the Camino only once, he is not a walking expert, nor an athlete. His motivation for doing the Camino was to understand why hundreds of thousands of people not only start, but complete every year a 500-mile journey. An essential book for pilgrims !
