Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mystical realm of the Seven Circles, all creatures live in harmony within their own sphere. The noble centaurs live in the forests. The goblins and trolls lurk underground. And in the tranquil center the most evolved beings of all—the elves and the druids—dwell in a peace that has lasted from time out of mind. That is about to change. Disaffected members of all the races are gathering into a seditious force that may portend the fall of the Seven Circles into chaos. Strangers to brutality and warfare, the druids need a champion who can teach them to defend themselves. To this aim, they recruit warriors from a warlike world where only the strong survive. A primitive world where life lasts only as long as you can fight for it. A world called Earth. “Absolutely nobody builds a more convincing fantasy realm than Doug Niles.”—R.A. Salvatore, bestselling author of The Demon Awakens “Niles…writes so well that his characters come to life after only a few lines.” —Starlog

Book excerpt: HIS BOOK IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE A COURSE IN PRACTICAL Geometry for engineering students who have already received some instruction in elementary plane geometry, graph plotting, and the use T of vectors. It also covers the requirements of Secondary School pupils taking Practical Geometry at the Advanced Level. The grouping adopted, in which Plane Geometry is dealt with in Part I, and Solid or Descriptive Geometry in Part II, is artificial, and it is the intention that the two parts should be read concurrently. The logical treatment of the subject presents many difficulties and the sequence of the later chapters in both parts is necessarily a compromise; as an illustration, certain of the more easy inter sections and developments might with advantage be taken at an earlier stage than that indicated. In Part I considerable space has been devoted to Engineering Graphics, particularly to the applications of graphical integration. The use of graphical methods of computation is fully justified in most engineering problems of a practical nature-especially where analytical methods would prove laborious -the results obtained being as accurate as the data warrant.

Book excerpt: The seventh book of Pappus's Collection, his commentary on the Domain (or Treasury) of Analysis, figures prominently in the history of both ancient and modern mathematics: as our chief source of information concerning several lost works of the Greek geometers Euclid and Apollonius, and as a book that inspired later mathematicians, among them Viete, Newton, and Chasles, to original discoveries in their pursuit of the lost science of antiquity. This presentation of it is concerned solely with recovering what can be learned from Pappus about Greek mathematics. The main part of it comprises a new edition of Book 7; a literal translation; and a commentary on textual, historical, and mathematical aspects of the book. It proved to be convenient to divide the commentary into two parts, the notes to the text and translation, and essays about the lost works that Pappus discusses. The first function of an edition of this kind is, not to expose new discoveries, but to present a reliable text and organize the accumulated knowledge about it for the reader's convenience. Nevertheless there are novelties here. The text is based on a fresh transcription of Vat. gr. 218, the archetype of all extant manuscripts, and in it I have adopted numerous readings, on manuscript authority or by emendation, that differ from those of the old edition of Hultsch. Moreover, many difficult parts of the work have received little or no commentary hitherto.

Book excerpt: In this story, two significant events in Canadian history intersect: the Rollout of the Avro Arrow on October 4, 1957, and the ongoing land claims of the First Nations Mississauga. Lois Michelsen is almost fourteen when she is uprooted from her childhood home in small-town Ontario and moved to Centrewood, a brand-new, model satellite community located on the outskirts of Toronto. Her father views it as his ‘ideal city’, since its plan is based on concentric circles instead of a grid plan, which Lois prefers. Only the adjacent abandoned farm with its fallow pastureland, resurgent wildlife, winding stream and quiet woods offers her solace through the long, hot and lonely summer. There she befriends a newly hatched painted turtle, discovers a red salamander and finds herself protected by a bald-headed eagle. Concerned about Lois facing a new school alone, her mother foists on her a 'new little friend' from the neighbourhood: a little hussy named Mitsy whose ‘cat’s eyes’, sharp tongue and lewd behaviour wreak havoc. Unlike normal dreams, Lois is susceptible to 'waking visions', when real time is suspended in dual planes of reality. Her father is lead aeronautical engineer for the Avro Arrow. When she attends the Rollout in Malton, her sensibilities open her up to the ‘waking vision’ of an Indian chief standing on the tarmac next to the Arrow.

Book excerpt: The sacred Flower of Life pattern, the primary geometric generator of all physical form, is explored in even more depth in this volume, the second half of the famed Flower of Life workshop. The proportions of the human body, the nuances of human consciousness, the sizes and distances of the stars, planets and moons, even the creations of humankind, are all shown to reflect their origins in this beautiful and divine image. Through an intricate and detailed geometrical mapping, Drunvalo Melchizedek shows how the seemingly simple design of the Flower of Life contains the genesis of our entire third-dimensional existence. From the pyramids and mysteries of Egypt to the new race of Indigo children, Drunvalo presents the sacred geometries of the reality and the subtle energies that shape our world. We are led through a divinely inspired labyrinth of science, stories, logic, and coincidence on a path of remembering where we come from and the wonder and magic of who we are. Finally, for the first time in print, Drunvalo shares the instructions for the Mer-Ka-Ba meditation--step-by-step techniques for the re-creation of the energy field of the evolved human--which is the key to ascension and the next dimensional world. if done from love, this ancient process of breathing prana opens up for us a world of tantalizing possibility in this dimension, from protective powers to the healing of oneself, of others, and even of the planet. You may discover a memory or a fleeting reflection of yourself in the following topics: - The Unfolding of the Third Informational System: the circles and squares of human consciousness, Leonardo da Vinci's true understanding of the Flower of Life, and exploring the rooms of the great pyramid - Whispers From Our Ancient Heritage: the initiations of Egypt, the mysteries of resurrection, interdimensional conception, ancient mystery schools, Egyptian tantra, and sexual energy and the orgasm - Unveiling the Mer-Ka-Ba Meditation: chakras and the human energy system, energy fields around the body, the seventeen breaths of the Mer-Ka-Ba meditation, and the sacred geometry of the human lightbody.

Book excerpt: This book presents two of the most important traditions of the Dakota people, the Red Road and the Holy Dance, as told by Samuel Mniyo and Robert Goodvoice, two Dakota men from the Wahpeton Dakota Nation near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. Their accounts of these central spiritual traditions and other aspects of Dakota life and history go back seven generations and help to illuminate the worldview of the Dakota people for the younger generation of Dakotas, also called the Santee Sioux. “The Good Red Road,” an important symbolic concept in the Holy Dance, means the good way of living or the path of goodness. The Holy Dance (also called the Medicine Dance) is a Dakota ceremony of earlier generations. Although it is no longer practiced, it too was a central part of the tradition and likely the most important ceremonial organization of the Dakotas. While some people believe that the Holy Dance is sacred and that the information regarding its subjects should be allowed to die with the last believers, Mniyo believed that these spiritual ceremonies played a key role in maintaining connections with the spirit world and were important aspects of shaping the identity of the Dakota people. In The Red Road and Other Narratives of the Dakota Sioux, Daniel Beveridge brings together Mniyo and Goodvoice’s narratives and biographies, as well as songs of the Holy Dance and the pictographic notebooks of James Black (Jim Sapa), to make this volume indispensable for scholars and members of the Dakota community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the role of number as a bridge between Heaven and Earth • Reveals the numerical code by which the ancients maintained high standards of art and culture • Sets out the alchemical formulas for the fusion of elements and the numerical origins of various sacred names and numbers • Describes the rediscovery of knowledge associated with the Holy Grail, through which the influence of the Heavenly Order is made active on Earth The priests of ancient Egypt preserved a geometrical canon, a numerical code of harmonies and proportions, that they applied to music, art, statecraft, and all the institutions of their civilization. Plato, an initiate in the Egyptian mysteries, said it was the instrument by which the ancients maintained high, principled standards of civilization and culture over thousands of years. In The Dimensions of Paradise, John Michell describes the results of a lifetime’s research, demonstrating how the same numerical code underlies sacred structures from ancient times to the Christian era. In the measurements of Stonehenge, the foundation plan of Glastonbury, Plato’s ideal city, and the Heavenly City of the New Jerusalem described in the vision of Saint John lie the science and cosmology on which the ancient world order was founded. The central revelation of this book is a structure of geometry and number representing the essential order of the heavens and functioning as a map of paradise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-person zero-sum game theory deals with situations that are perfectly competitive—there are exactly two decision makers for whom there is no possibility of cooperation or compromise. It is the most fundamental part of game theory, and the part most commonly applied. There are diverse applications to military battles, sports, parlor games, economics and politics. The theory was born in World War II, and has by now matured into a significant and tractable body of knowledge about competitive decision making. The advent of modern, powerful computers has enabled the solution of many games that were once beyond computational reach. Two-Person Zero-Sum Games, 4th Ed. offers an up-to-date introduction to the subject, especially its computational aspects. Any finite game can be solved by the brute force method of enumerating all possible strategies and then applying linear programming. The trouble is that many interesting games have far too many strategies to enumerate, even with the aid of computers. After introducing ideas, terminology, and the brute force method in the initial chapters, the rest of the book is devoted to classes of games that can be solved without enumerating every strategy. Numerous examples are given, as well as an extensive set of exercises. Many of the exercises are keyed to sheets of an included Excel workbook that can be freely downloaded from the SpringerExtras website. This new edition can be used as either a reference book or as a textbook.
