This book was released on 1974-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies. Beginning with father, and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis. The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related linguistically or semantically. The lexical work includes detailed surveys of a word s occurrences, not only in biblical material but also in other ancient Near Eastern writings. Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Ugaritic, and Northwest Semitic sources are surveyed, among others, as well as the Qumran texts and the Septuagint; and in cultures where no cognate word exists, the authors often consider cognate ideas. TDOT s emphasis, though, is on Hebrew terminology and on biblical usage. The contributors employ philology as well as form-critical and traditio-historical methods, with the aim of understanding the religious statements in the Old Testament. Extensive bibliographical information adds to the value of this reference work. This English edition attempts to serve the needs of Old Testament students without the linguistic background of more advanced scholars; it does so, however, without sacrificing the needs of the latter. Ancient scripts (Hebrew, Greek, etc.) are regularly transliterated in a readable way, and meanings of foreign words are given in many cases where the meanings might be obvious to advanced scholars. Where the Hebrew text versification differs from that of English Bibles, the English verse appears in parentheses. Such features will help all earnest students of the Bible to avail themselves of the manifold theological insights contained in this monumental work.

Book excerpt: Understanding the Psalms implies understanding the metaphors they use in bringing to expression the reflections on God, the world, the enemies, the self. In modern scholarship the study of figurative language was often neglected in favor of discussions of genre, poetical form or canonical organisation. The present volume brings the study of metaphorical language back to the heart of Psalm scholarship. Three areas of investigation are given particular attention in this collection of nineteen contributions, written by leading scholars in the field: 1. The elucidation of hitherto misunderstood or unrecognized metaphors; 2. The study of conceptually interrelated clusters of metaphors and 3. The role metaphors play in poetic and argumentative development of the Psalms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the book of Job, the interlocutors (Job, the friends, and Yahweh) seem to largely ignore one another's arguments. This observation leads some to propose that the dialogue lacks conceptual coherence. Lance Hawley argues that the interlocutors tangentially and sometimes overtly attend to previously stated points of view and attempt to persuade their counterparts through the employment of metaphor. Hawley uses the theoretical approach of Conceptual Metaphor Theory to trace the concepts of speech and animals throughout the dialogue. Beyond explaining the individual metaphors in particular texts, he shows how speech metaphors compete with one another, most perceptibly in the expressions of job's words are wind. With regard to animal metaphors, coherence is especially perceptible in the job is a predatory animal metaphor. In these expressions, the dialogue demonstrates intentional picking-up on previously stated arguments. Hawley argues that the animal images in the divine speeches are not metaphorical, in spite of recent scholarly interpretation that reads them as such. Rather, Yahweh appears as a sage to question the negative status of wild animals that Job and his friends assume in their significations of people are animals. This is especially apparent in Yahweh's strophes on the lion and the wild donkey, both of which appear multiple times in the metaphorical expressions of Job and his friends.

Book excerpt: In continuity with the previous BETL volumes on biblical metaphors, namely Metaphor in the Hebrew Bible edited by Pierre Van Hecke (BETL 187; 2005), and Metaphors in the Psalms co-edited by Pierre Van Hecke and Antje Labahn (BETL 231; 2010), this third volume intends to contribute to and foster biblical research on metaphors by focusing on a phenomenon that has only received scant attention thus far, namely the relationship and interplay between different metaphors in the texts of the Hebrew Bible. Biblical metaphors very often come in chains, especially in poetry, in which individual metaphors may interact in a number of ways, e.g. they may modify, reverse, shift, and even contradict or reinforce the previous ones. Biblical metaphors often create families of metaphors that form a genuine repertoire of images to think and talk about a specific target domain from multiple viewpoints. The same source domain often inspires clusters of thoughts about a wide variety of realities. The same "root metaphor" may run throughout an entire book or a section of a book, emerging on the surface level of a text in many ways and interacting with other metaphors along the text continuum. The volume Networks of Metaphors in the Hebrew Bible investigates biblical metaphors not as "isolated events of discourse" but as constantly intertwining and shaping a network of multiple interactions between the figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the essays in this volume stem from the special sessions of the Historiography Seminar of the Canadian Society for Biblical Studies, held in the late spring of 2007 (University of Saskatchewan). The papers in these focused sessions dealt with issues of self-identification, community identity, and ethnicity in Judahite and Yehudite historiography. The scholars present addressed a range of issues, such as the understanding, presentation, and delimitation of “Israel” in various biblical texts, the relationship of Israelites to Judahites in Judean historical writings, the definition of Israel over against other peoples, and the possible reasons why the ethnoreligious community (“Israel”) was the focus of Judahite/Yehudite historiography. Papers approached these matters from a variety of theoretical and disciplinary vantage points. For example, some pursued an inner-biblical perspective (pentateuchal sources/writings, Former Prophets, Latter Prophets, Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah), while others pursued a cross-cultural comparative perspective (ancient Near Eastern, ancient Greek and Hellenistic historiographies, Western and non-Western historiographic traditions). Still others attempted to relate the material remains to the question of community identity in northern Israel, monarchic Judah, and postmonarchic Yehud.
