Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has seen rapid proliferation of youth gangs since 1980. During this period, the number of cities with gang problems increased from an estimated 286 jurisdictions with more than 2,000 gangs and nearly 100,000 gang members in 1980 (Miller, 1992) to about 4,800 jurisdictions with more than 31,000 gangs and approximately 846,000 gang members in 1996(Moore and Terrett, in press). An 11-city survey of eighth graders found that 9 percent were currently gang members, and 17 percent said they had belonged to a gang at some point in their lives (Esbensen and Osgood, 1997).Other studies reported comparable percentages and also showed that gang members were responsible for a large proportion of violent offenses. In the Rochester site of the OJJDP-funded Program of Research on the Causes and Correlates of Delinquency, gang members (30 percent of the sample) self-reported committing 68 percent of all violent offenses (Thornberry, 1998). In the Denver site, adolescent gang members (14 percent of the sample) self-reported committing 89 percent of all serious violent offenses (Huizinga, 1997). In another study, supported by OJJDP and several other agenciesand organizations, adolescent gang members in Seattle (15 percent of the sample) self-reported involvement in 85 percent of robberies committed by the entire sample (Battin et al., 1998).This Bulletin reviews data and research to consolidate available knowledge on youth gangs that are involved in criminal activity. Following a historical perspective, demographic information ispresented. The scope of the problem is assessed, including gang problems in juvenile detention and correctional facilities. Several issues are then addressed by reviewing gang studies to provide aclearer understanding of youth gang problems. An extensive list of references is provided for further review.

Book excerpt: The study assessed the psychometric properties of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) questionnaires (Family Fire Risk Interview Form, Juvenile Fire Risk Interview Form, Parent Fire Risk Interview Form) used to record juvenile firesetting events. It also attempted to identify characteristics of firesetters, determine a basis for the variation in the severity of fires set, and determine the chance of recidivism. Specific types of firesetters exhibit a range of different characteristics. Maturational and environmental factors are implicated. Recommends that future examinations of this subject should include an examination of the firesetter's history, including cognitive and behavioural reviews, and parent and family influences and stressors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seemed at times during the 1960s that America was caught in an unending cycle of violence and disorder. Successive summers from 1964-1968 brought waves of urban unrest, street fighting, looting, and arson to black communities in cities from Florida to Wisconsin, Maryland to California. In some infamous cases like Watts (1965), Newark (1967), and Detroit (1967), the turmoil lasted for days on end and left devastation in its wake: entire city blocks were reduced to burnt-out ruins and scores of people were killed or injured mainly by police officers and National Guardsmen as they battled to regain control. This book takes the pivotal year of 1967 as its focus and sets it in the context of the long, hot summers to provide new insights into the meaning of the riots and their legacy. It offers important new findings based on extensive original archival research, including never-before-seen, formerly embargoed and classified government documents and newly released official audio recordings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tinyville Town preschool series stacks up in a whole new way with the addition of the fourth volume, I’m a Librarian—the latest board book to feature one of the many diverse residents of the charming town. In I’m a Librarian, readers get to know the town librarian as he helps a little boy find a favorite book. As the search progresses, fans of the series will recognize many other residents of Tinyville Town also visiting the library. From New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Brian Biggs, the Tinyville Town series launched in 2016 with three books: Tinyville Town Gets to Work!, a world-establishing picture book that introduces the town and its many residents, and two board books: I’m a Veterinarian and I’m a Firefighter. With a nod to the busy world of Richard Scarry and the neighborhood feel of Sesame Street, this new series is becoming a favorite among preschoolers and a staple of preschool classroom libraries. Set in a cozy community of kind, friendly people, the Tinyville Town books are ideal for story time and class discussions about occupations and community helpers.
