Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the difficulty of serving in local government. It's about finding meaning in public service and developing a deep sense of pride in making a difference to the well being of our communities. I wrote this book to provide hope and guidance to my colleagues in administration and their political partners as they work through difficult times and climb over tremendous obstacles. It is a true story that shows what can be achieved when we are prepared to lead, when we instill a sense of urgency in the workplace culture, when we act to become part of the solution and not part of the problem, when we encourage people to have fun in the workplace, when we show people we truly care about them as human beings, when we reach out to solve contentious issues without the traditional adversarial techniques, when we become accessible as managers to clients, staff and City Councillors and when we tirelessly seek to communicate from the top to the bottom and across the silos through to the clients and back again to Council. It provides important insights on how to manage the complex and often strained relationship between administration and elected officials. It shows what can be achieved when we work as a team regardless of our administrative or political roles towards shared goals. It's about striving for success, not as a goal, but as a journey that never ends. -- To purchase a copy of Randy Diehl's book, please visit: ...
Book Synopsis Military Leadership Lessons for Public Service by : Charles Szypszak
Download or read book Military Leadership Lessons for Public Service written by Charles Szypszak and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military veterans have had some of the most intensive leadership training available. Many return to their communities seeking to apply what they have learned. Those who enter the world of public affairs--where colleagues are increasingly less likely to have served in the military--may encounter a popular misconception: that military leadership is all about exercising authority and giving orders. In fact military leadership is based on interpersonal dynamics, often learned through trying circumstances. Effective management of civil emergencies--as shown by 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina--calls for the same official demeanor, decisiveness and trustworthiness as does combat. Good leadership is fundamentally the same in ordinary day-to-day challenges as well. This book describes how the principles and methods of military leadership are effective for public service. Book Synopsis Ethics Management in the Public Service by : Liza Ireni-Saban
Download or read book Ethics Management in the Public Service written by Liza Ireni-Saban and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics Management in the Public Service offers a new perspective for ethics management in the Public Administration. The traditional approaches, relying on codified rules, regulations, and guidelines, have not yielded the results expected of them and have not managed to serve as an effective tool in the hands of public administrators struggling with ethical and moral questions. Unlike Code-based training strategies, focusing on the written word and its application in real-life situations, the authors introduce a sensory-based strategy to sharpen public administrators’ senses. This type of training would first aim to help the public administrators become conscious of the use of their senses in a routine manner, not necessarily limited to ethical issues. Once an individual becomes more conscious of his or her acts and thinking process, they can better understand their motives, and again attempt to modify their conduct if and when necessary. This book holds that sensory-based metaphors are an important device in applying the hermeneutic approach to ethics management in the public service, as they can enhance new understandings about the extent to which particular ethical principles might be disabling. Using metaphors as a management tool of public service ethics helps to communicate public values and ethical guidelines to public administrators.

Book Synopsis Invisible Masters by : Elisabeth Ceppi
Download or read book Invisible Masters written by Elisabeth Ceppi and published by Dartmouth College Press. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invisible Masters rewrites the familiar narrative of the relation between Puritan religious culture and New England's economic culture as a history of the primary discourse that connected them: service. The understanding early Puritans had of themselves as God's servants and earthly masters was shaped by their immersion in an Atlantic culture of service and the worldly pressures and opportunities generated by New England's particular place in it. Concepts of spiritual service and mastery determined Puritan views of the men, women, and children who were servants and slaves in that world. So, too, did these concepts shape the experience of family, labor, law, and economy for those men, women, and children - the very bedrock of their lives. This strikingly original look at Puritan culture will appeal to a wide range of Americanists and historians.
