Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in the number and life expectancy of elderly people is a general trend across Europe. Each country responds differently to the increased demands for elderly care, due to differences in their socio-cultural, political, and historical backgrounds. This book describes patterns of caregiving to frail, elderly people in Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Germany. For each country, characteristic features of professional and informal elderly care are described, specifically focusing on home nursing. Differences in home nursing in these four countries are described from a broad sociological and cultural perspective. These are related to differences between health-care professions and health-care sectors, structures, and ways of financing of health-care systems, the role of the family in caregiving to elderly people, and norms and values regarding health and illness. This volume provides insight into country-specific patterns of provision of care for vulnerable elderly people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The growing number of very old people and their present and future demands upon existing health and social service resources is of major concern among practitioners and policy makers throughout Europe. This book makes an important contribution to the debate about the future of care for this population group from a cross-national perspective. Policies in most countries stress the need for older people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Home services, in particular home help, are one of the most important ingredients in the service mix aimed to achieve this goal.

This report summarizes key learnings from 25 projects in the Fund's seniors' health issues theme area. Introductory sections set the context for the projects (including a socio-demographic & health profile of seniors) and provide an overview of the Fund's studies related to the issue. The report then discusses significant & relevant findings of projects that examined home care, integrated service delivery, pharmaceutical use, and rural health. Finally, implications of the findings for health human resources, cross-sectoral matters, and policy & practice are discussed. The appendix summarizes information on the Fund projects relevant to seniors' issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population aging often provokes fears of impending social security deficits, uncontrollable medical expenditures, and transformations in living arrangements, but public policy could also stimulate social innovations. These issues are typically studied at the national level; yet they must be resolved where most people live--in diverse neighborhoods in cities. New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo are the four largest cities among the wealthiest, most developed nations of the world. The essays commissioned for this volume compare what it is like to grow older in these cities with respect to health care, quality of life, housing, and long-term care. The contributors look beyond aggregate national data to highlight the importance of how local authorities implement policies.

Book excerpt: "In FELICIE, the focus is on the health of the elderly, and on the resources at their disposal to cope with the severe impairments liable to affect their quality of life. Not only personal resources - economic well-being and educational attainment - but also the potential support of close kin, i.e. their partner, of course, and their children, if available. This leads to the more specific question of care. One major conclusion of the FELICIE study is that the disabled older adults of the future will fare better, on average, than those of today, both on a personal level, thanks to higher levels of education, and on a social level, thanks to the more frequent presence of their spouse and, at least potentially, their children. The conclusions are based on the experience of nine countries across Europe (north: Finland, Netherlands; west: Belgium, France, Germany, United Kingdom; south: Italy, Portugal; east: Czech Republic). In terms of both demographic and social indicators, the participating countries are fairly representative of their region."--Publisher.
