Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Sacramental Theology presents a complete overview of sacramental theology from the viewpoint of the body. This viewpoint is supported, in the first place, by Revelation, for which the sacraments are the place where we enter into contact with the body of the risen Jesus. It is a viewpoint, secondly, which is firmly rooted in our concrete human bodily experience, thus allowing for a strong connection between faith and life, creation and redemption. From this point of view, the treatise on the sacraments occupies a strategic role. For the sacraments appear, not as the last of a series of topics (after dealing with Creation, Christ, the Church), but as the original place in which to stand in order to contemplate the entire Christian mystery. This point of view of the body, which resonates with contemporary philosophy, sheds fruitful light on classical themes, such as the relationship of the sacraments with creation, the composition of the sacramental sign, the efficacy of the sacraments, the sacramental character, the role of the minister, or the relationship of the sacrament with the Church as a sacrament. As a result of this approach, the Eucharist takes on a central role, since this is the sacrament where the body of Jesus is made present. The rest of the sacraments are seen as prolongations of the eucharistic body, so as to fill all the time and space of the faithful. This foundation of the theology of the sacraments in eucharistic theology is supported by an analysis of the patristic and medieval tradition. In order to support its conclusions, Introduction to Sacramental Theology examines the doctrine of Scripture (especially St. John and St. Paul), the main patristic and medieval authors (St. Augustine, Hugh of St. Victor, St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas Aquinas), the response of Trent to the protestant challenges, up to modern authors such as Scheeben, Rahner, Ratzinger, or Chauvet, including the teaching of Vatican II about the Church as a kind of sacrament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Defence of the Seven Sacraments (in Latin, Assertio Septem Sacramentorum) is a theological treatise from 1521, written by King Henry VIII of England. Henry started to write it in 1519 while he was reading Martin Luther's attack on indulgences. By June of that year, he had shown it to Thomas Wolsey, but it remained private until three years later, when the earlier manuscript became the first two chapters of the Assertio, the rest consisting of new material relating to Luther's De Captivitate Babylonica. It is believed that Thomas More was involved in the composition of the piece. Author J. J. Scarisbrick describes the work as "one of the most successful pieces of Catholic polemics produced by the first generation of anti-Protestant writers." It went through some twenty editions in the sixteenth century and, as early as 1522, had appeared in two different German translations. It was dedicated to Pope Leo X, who rewarded Henry with the title Fidei Defensor (Defender of the Faith) in October 1521 (a title revoked following the king's break with the Catholic Church in the 1530s, but re-awarded to his heir by the English Parliament).

This book was released on 2004-08-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Cranmer was Archbishop of Canterbury (1533-1556) in the reign of Henry VIII and Edward VI. He was deposed under Mary Tudor and burned at Oxford as a heretic. The charges brought against him were based chiefly on the doctrine of the Lord's Supper expounded in this book. The core of Cranmer's teaching was that the sacrament was essentially spiritual in nature. The body of Christ was not present in a physical or carnal way, as the Church of Rome taught by its doctrine of transubstantiation. Cranmer based his position on Scripture, in particular St. John's Gospel, where, he showed, Christ meant eating and drinking His body and blood to be understood as receiving by faith the benefits of His death for sins. To think of eating and drinking Christ's actual body and blood with the mouth is, he argued, a gross misunderstanding; the purpose of the sacrament is to satisfy spiritual hunger. The Roman doctrine, he maintained, was also contrary to the true Catholic teaching of the two natures of Christ - His humanity and His divinity. In the creeds we confess that Christ has ascended bodily into heaven, not to return to earth in that manner until the last day. The true Catholic faith, therefore, requires us to believe that He is not present with us in the nature of His humanity but that He is present in the nature of His deity. To teach, as the Church of Rome does, that He is present bodily in the sacrament is to deny this teaching of the creeds, to assert a heretical doctrine of the one nature of Christ and to deny His real humanity. For this reason Cranmer called his book 'A Defence of the True and Catholic Doctrine of the Sacrament'. The errors of Rome also extended to the notion that the sacrament was a sacrifice offered by the priest to take away sins. Cranmer refuted this from the Scriptures and the ancient Fathers.

Book excerpt: This work compares the rites of many sects in regard to the administration of the Sacraments including, but not limited to the Anglicans, the Baptists, the Catholics, the Congregationalists, the Copts, the Episcopalians, the Greeks, the Jacobites, the Lutherans, the Maronites, the Methodists, the Nestorians, the Presbyterians, the Protestants and the Syrians. During Christ's life upon this earth he instituted these sacraments as so many holy ordinances of salvation, by wllich his redemption is applied to each member of the Christian Church. Christ, then, is the only Redeemer, and he made these sacraments, and appointed these holy rites, as the seven golden gates of heaven, through which each must pass to that abode of endless bliss. From the very days of the Apostles these seven sacraments were believed and received by the whole people and clergy. Afterwards political disturbances, wars, local discords, the pride and ambition of designing men, tore asunder and dirided the one holy Church of Christ, into different sects, creeds, Churches. When the Catholic Church, the Bride of the Lamb, was thus rent asunder, those religions denominations which C.'l.me forth from her-the Mother of all Churches-those sects and religious denominations of the East and of the West, both Orientnls am1 Protestants, still clung to these sacraments, or kept the form, at least, of these holy ordinances. Thus baptism is still found among all Christians; Confirmation is seen in every Church of the East, and its shadow among the Episcopalians. The Eucharist is devoutly recited in the East, and its figure and type is the Communion services of the Protestant Churches. All have either penance or some kind of repentance for sin. They anoint the sick or pray at the bedside of the dying. By the imposition-of hands the clergy of every Christian Church is ordained. The marriage ceremony is found in every nation of the earth. These holy ordinances, instituted by Christ, which are only seen whole and entire in the Catholic Church, are pro"ed to be of divine origin, not only by the doctrines of that great Church, but also by the customs and ceremonies of the sects and denominations which came forth from her fruitful bosom, during the various ages which elapsed since the time of Christ. These separated Churches, especially those of the East, so old and venerable, show, in a striking way, the belief of the early Church. From the earliest times, although having different rites, customs, and disciplines, from those of the Catholic Church, still they ha"e always held the same doctrine and belief relating to the seven sacraments. Various Christians have been trying to conform to what they believe to have been the doctrines and customs of the early Church. In the following pages much light relating to the sacraments will be thrown on this epoch. The writer will quote numberless texts from the Fathers and writers following the days of the Apostles. We arc trying to follow the doctrines of Christ and his teachings, delivered by word of month. The Apostles and disciples taught the Christians of the first ages, and their doctrines were written down by the great Fathers and Christian writers of the times following the Apostles. The writings of the early Fathers thus given the key to the teachings of Christ, and the meaning of the Bible. The reader will find in the following pages complete and exhaustive treatises relating to the important matters of which the work treats. The author found great difficulty in condensing so as not to make the work too large or technical for the laity. But we are under the impression that the simple, easy style in which it is written, will make it interesting as well as valuable reading.
